The Decade In Metal

i already made this list a year ago, but since then things have changed..somewhat. narrowing it down to just ten was quite uncomfortable.
10Lamb of God
Sacrament

Lamb of God are essentially a mainstream band. Usually that's a problem for me. Not the case here. Incredible groove, skull-crushingly heavy, delicious riffs and technically flawless. Good candidates for torch-bearers of Pantera.
9Emperor
Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire...

I always thought Emperor's classic albums would be better if they were less "black" and more "prog." It's as if the mighty Ihsahn himself answered my call. Forget Enslaved, THIS is how progressive black metal is done.
8Deftones
White Pony

A perennial favorite, but has since dipped slightly in ranking. Still better than Diamond Eyes though.
7Deathspell Omega
Fas - Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum

Surprise of the millennium right here. I first heard these guys just 4 months ago and they simply blew my mind. They are fully deserving of all the hype they get and they truly, TRULY make 95% of black metal completely irrelevant (90's included).
6Meshuggah
Catch Thirtythree

Each time I listen to this I like it more, and that's going to become impossible in the near future. Simply mindblowing. All their albums are monumental, but this one is intergalactic.
5Mastodon
Blood Mountain

Not much done changed here. Still worship Mastodon, still think this is absolutely their best work.
4Tool
Lateralus

Has there ever been such a consistent 70+ minute album? With the possible of exception of Frances the Mute, the answer is no.
3Between the Buried and Me
Colors

It seems like every album that achieves legendary status (especially here) inevitably starts being bashed for some reason. Unfortunately my beloved Colors has shared the same fate. To all the haters, keep on hatin'. You're missing out.
2Agalloch
Ashes Against the Grain

Seeing these guys live last week really put a new spin on this (even though I've been worshipping AATG since day 1). Not only is there not a single weak moment on this, most of the moments are simply transcendent. Bloodbirds might be the most powerful metal song of the decade.
1Opeth
Blackwater Park

Cliche? Yes. Fucking monumental? Also yes.
