02.19.11 | i was thirteen in 1998 and listening to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Radiohead, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine etc. I agree that around 13 is the age when music taste alters massively. I went from listening to whatever was on the radio to being all elitist and snobby and primarily only listened to grunge bands. good times! |

02.19.11 | dude my taste in music hadnt shifted till i was like 16 or 17. i bought all the blink 182 albums. new found glory was my second favorite band. and i thought that when my friend played the fall of troy that it was to heavy and referred to any music that screams growls or yells as screamo like every fucktard out there today.
ill say the song that got the ball rollin for me was gentile by slipknot. theres a riff on there that i thought sounded like thrashy stuff, so i started listening to metallica because of it, then my friend introduced me to the fall of troy and btbam. so technically doppelganger and the silent circus helped me to the other side. |

02.19.11 | I think it was West Coast gangster rap, most of which I don't like now. My tastes changed massively at 14 when I picked up the axe! Metallica were the turning point really. I don't even listen to them often anymore but massive gateway band. That took me to classic rock, then I got into some punk and post-hardcore, then eventually electronic music, back into hip-hop and more recently jazz.
At some point my tastes stopped changing and started just expanding. I'm like a blue whale, floating through the ocean and just indiscriminately eating music I come across. Every now and then something doesn't sit right so I let it go and keep on chuggin. And that's my life story. |

02.20.11 | Middle school music was this poor transitional phase from Japanese music to Korean pop, crunkcore, pop punk and "indie". Basically, if it wasn't on American radio stations yet, it was automatically good music to me.
Bad times. |

02.20.11 | Green Day, Nirvana and Brand New for me. 14 (last year) was the real defining year for me. |

02.20.11 | At 13? I hadn't started exploring music on my own at 13...wasn't until a year or two later, when I was a freshman in High School that I had my sister make my first mix c.d. (because she had Kazaa) using songs from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and various other places. It had on it:
Millencolin
Bad Religion
Papa Roach
Powerman 5000
Dropkick Murphys
Outkast
Rancid
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Sublime
...among other bands. It was called 'Elite Video Gamer's Mix'; I still have that playlist on my comp today (though it's been upgraded and built upon a few times since). Ahh, when I was young and exploring music was still an exciting prospect...:-) |
