Enotron 04.06.11	it's better just not to. there's the odd, 90s post-rockish sort of hazy emo. there's "twinkle daddy" emo, with lots of melodies and noodles being played at upbeat, yet disjointed rhythms. there's screamo/skrams, there's the boring indie high vocal emo(sunny day real estate, empire), and a lot more

But when people mention the "emo" genre, I think of bands like Hawthorne Heights, My Chemical Romance, and The Used (in other words, terrible bands.) I also think of shitty lyrics, which collectively amount to: "Since you don't love me, I'll kill myself."

ConsiderPhlebas 04.06.11	Sick of it All and Black Flag have pretty emotional vocals. The term emo was derided by musicians (type in 'Embrace' and 'emo' to youtube to see a live performance with Ian Mackaye calling it retarded). Labels like Deep Elm took the term and applied it to indie type stuff that had a harder, more visceral edge than the mainstream indie around. As bands incorporated more pop punk styles, the term shifted. Saying that the shit scene stuff isn't emo is like saying that 'gay' still means happy.
twlight 04.06.11	I hear people that don't know anything about music call bands like BTBAM, august burns red, etc "screamo" simply because the vocalists scream. I hate it when i hear that because in my opinion "screamo" is a derogatory term used to describe shit bands like Hawthorne Hights and what-not. As for "emo" i never been able to figure out what it is because people will describe many types of music as being emo simply because of the lyrical content. I think emo music would be stuff like Brand New, Name Taken, Jimmy Eat World, old PMtoday, Say Anything, Silverstein and stuff like that.

TheEnigma 04.06.11	I think that because semantics change over time, there is always going to be some debate in regards to what the term 'emo' means. Some think of My Chemical Romance and Hawthorne Heights, others think of...well, whatever you've read in this thread, and others still can only think of skinny, whiny, "individuals" that wear their pants too tight and their faces too black. Personally I try to avoid the word altogether.

Crimson Death 04.07.11	Rock music was always emotional. Then came punk/hardcore which had different themes like straight-edge, rebellion, political...etc. And then came emotional hardcore which went back to emotional roots of rock music (love, relationship, pain...etc.) with the musical style of hardcore. At least that's what I figure, it's probably a bunch of BS.
