Metalcore Bible Part 2; Philadelphia

Philadelphia is a hotspot for violence in a nation that is already rsaturated in it, much like Cleveland and Detroit. In the early rnineties many of the shows that took place around this area and rwith the bands that came from here, the violence was great. This rreflected on the music that was produced from this scene, ugly, rthick and dissonant.
1This Day Forward
The Transient Effects of Light on Water

Posi-metalcore for the most part. Hard-hitting melodies with a slight technical influence and a balls-out
screamer who can level buildings with his voice.
2 All Else Failed
This Never Happened

Metalcore mixed with emo. Similar to Drowningman in premise but vastly different. Placing a greater influence
on the metal influences, the riffs are chunky and technical and the whole album is one intricate ball of rage.
3The Minor Times
Summer of Wolves

One of the many Botch clones bands that popped up after the unfortunate demise of said band. They
plagiaries Botch riffs all over the place but they do it well.
4Starkweather
This Sheltering Night

Ah Starkweather. Genre-hopping, inaccessible and unhinged, this band defines the word "macabre." Nothing is
ever simple with this band and they are one of the few bands to have literally no boundaries on their sound.
Brilliant but twisted beyond all recognition. Highly recommended.
5A Life Once Lost
A Great Artist

Meshuggah-influenced, grind-loving technical madness. Nuff' said.
6Cleric
Regressions

Yet another band amidst the Meshuggah/Grind worship in Philadelphia, the take this band uses though is
rather unusual, combining haunting ambiance within all the technical madness. Unusual, original and worth a
great look.
7Turmoil
The Process Of

Jim Winters is quite the famous person in Philly. Not only was he a member of Earth Crisis and Starkweather
but also of one other band, Turmoil. Turmoil's approach was unusual in that it placed the hardcore influence
vastly over the metal. The metal influence can be heard in the riffs but the approach sticks far more to Minor
Threar minimalism, producing possibly one of the most intense metalcore albums that doesn't rely on
grindcore-influences.
8 Salvation
Smoke & Mirrors

One of the more upcoming bands within Philadelphia. Intense and powerful with massive grind and metal
influences. Unlike the others though it goes for pure Turmoil-esque intensity.
