03.26.12 | We chose in a large part on influence, tried to avoid overlapping subgenres (such as having halloween and not friday the 13th), and this isn't in order. i've seen a lot, and am always looking for more. any req's would be awesome |
Trebor.
03.26.12 | friday the 13th is awful
great job |
ConsiderPhlebas
03.26.12 | Good list, some interesting picks |

03.26.12 | dead snow
tucker and dale vs evil |
Trebor.
03.26.12 | Missing horror comedy |
theacademy
03.26.12 | some of these aren't horror
friday the 13th is technically a bad movie but highly enjoyable and extremely important
i would add:
Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th Part III
Halloween 4
Scream
Black Christmas (original)
Dawn of the Dead (Both original and 2004 remake)
|
theacademy
03.26.12 | oh and event horizon duh |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | tucker and dale vs evil is probably the best horror comedy ever made. I've seen it four times in the past month. and dead snow twice. |
jdennis31
03.26.12 | the hell. haven't seen darthmann in forever |
theacademy
03.26.12 | tucker and dale rules so extremely hard |
jdennis31
03.26.12 | haha nice. love both of those so much. seen tucker and dale about 4 times as well but dead snow only once. probably check it out again soon. |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | and the only thing on here that has the horror title stretched a little is 2001, but it Is about a computer coming to life and killing people. that's pretty horror right there |

theacademy
03.26.12 | ehh maybe not... 5 and 2 are about equally bleh |

03.26.12 | nice list. cool to see someone else recognizing Alien as a horror movie |
Hyperion1001
03.26.12 | missing some classic italian horror:
Susperia
The Beyond
Zombi
Black Sunday
i know you said you stuck with mostly american but italy has some of the best horror flicks |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | i agree, but my friend has seen none of the above, and I have only seen the last two. we felt we weren't experienced enough to even tread there. |
betterdrinkmyownpiss
03.26.12 | wheres the ring?
you got seven days |
Hyperion1001
03.26.12 | oh man the first 2 are my personal favorite italian horror, get it on those fast. Demons is fucking great too. |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | i was actually planning on watching susperia this weekend, but wound up reading textbooks and doing homework the whole fucking time. whoever said college is the best time of your life fucking LIED |
Hyperion1001
03.26.12 | haha just do like me and write a paper every 2 weeks and not try the rest of the time
the wonders of being an english major |

03.26.12 | haha 2 weeks is almost a third of a course for me. we only have 7 week terms, so everything is twice as fast, with twice the workload. |
MartiniKisses
03.26.12 | The Devil Inside was really scary!! |
BallsToTheWall
03.26.12 | Does Evil Dead mean all three or just the first one because if not.....ARMY OF FUCKING DARKNESS |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | well considering the first and the second are the same film, and army an extension..... |
omnipanzer
03.26.12 | There are so many, I used to be obsessed with horror flicks. Some of the lesser known ones from the 70's are the tits.
Event Horizon
The Thing (82')
In the Mouth of Madness
The People Under the Stairs
Silent Night, Bloody Night
The Shining
Evil Dead II > Evil Dead
Hellraiser
Pet Sematary
|
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | pet sematary? as a top? i mean it isnt bad but i didn't think it was that great. everything else on that list is great though (with the exception that i haven't seen the people under the stairs) |
Vesper
03.26.12 | 'Susperia'
'oh man the first 2 are my personal favorite italian horror'
You could start with spelling one of your favorite movies right, Matt. |
ComfortablyDumb
03.26.12 | where the fuck is Hellraiser and Dead-Alive? |
MartiniKisses
03.26.12 | Hellraiser is a badass film |

03.26.12 | "pet sematary? as a top?"

Graveyard
03.26.12 | List needs some more psychological horror |
Hyperion1001
03.26.12 | "well considering the first and the second are the same film"
ehhh i wouldnt go that far, evil dead 2 is essentially a remake of evil dead but there are enough differences that each film still stands on its own i think. ED 2 was much more akin to AoD with the horror/comedy mix while ED functions more as a straight horror film |
omnipanzer
03.26.12 | "where the fuck is Hellraiser and Dead-Alive?"
I covered 50% of that... but you're absolutely right about Dead Alive. |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | hellraiser is great, and dead alive is one of my personal favorites, but we were trying to go with original and trendsetting, and the dead coming back to life and demons from another plain had all been done so many times before. both excellent films on their own though |
evilford
03.26.12 | In the Mouth of Madness! yes! that movie is hilarious |
omnipanzer
03.26.12 | I'm an ED fanboy and love the series but 2 is far superior to 1 in terms of repeat viewing. |
Hyperion1001
03.26.12 | i always spell suspiria wrong i cant help that its spelled dumb |
evilford
03.26.12 | Army of Darkness is also amazing |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | @hyperion
i know, i was more joking than anything else. the first is significantly more serious, the second more entertaining |
MisterTornado
03.26.12 | 2001 isn't a horror film. The discussion begins and ends with The Shining. |
Hyperion1001
03.26.12 | also Day of the Dead is far superior to Dawn of the Dead imo |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | agreed |
omnipanzer
03.26.12 | Dead Alive was trendsetting, it was made popular totally by word of mouth for the directing and amped up gore mixed with the humor and low budget. Alan Jackson was known for it long before anything else. |
Vesper
03.26.12 | 'i always spell suspiria wrong i cant help that its spelled dumb'
its spelled exactly how it sounds u dummy

Hyperion1001
03.26.12 | not spelled how i spell it = spelled dumb |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | you mean peter jackson? and it was released in 92. humor, low budget, and gore had been around for at long time previous. i love bad taste also, btw |

03.26.12 | meh list |
Vesper
03.26.12 | Anyway, 28 Days Later anyone?

also [REC] is the most frightening zombie horror ive ever seen |
omnipanzer
03.26.12 | "you mean peter jackson? "
Jes I do
it was as popular an underground horror flick as you could find in the early 90's and I maintain that it deserves a place in the list. you could easily say the with out it and Evil Dead II you wouldn't have films like Shawn of the Dead. |
omnipanzer
03.26.12 | But there are far better... |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | glen had fucked up his voice the night before and couldnt do the vocals, so we got a full instrumental with the occasional back up vocals. didnt even matter it was still incredible |
Spec
03.26.12 | I don't remember [REC] being very good. If i'm thinking of the right one anyways. |

03.26.12 | Definitely needs Scream, House of 1000 Corpses, and The Devil's Rejects. |

03.26.12 | House and House II anyone? Loved House II when I was a kid. |
Spec
03.26.12 | Also not gonna lie, I thought the second Paranormal Activity was pretty damn good. The scene in the basement was terrifying. |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | @hyperion agreed on both acounts
and yes i agree that the evil dead II was very influential, but as much as i love dead alive
(i have seen it almost a dozen times) i just think it was an incredible latecomer to the party. but these things are all about opinions anyways. |

03.26.12 | yes! first horror comedy, from what i've read. never bothered to do the research myself :P |

03.26.12 | They did a really good job of balancing the gore with the humor. It's pretty fucking nasty for a comedy. Think of it as "Not another Teen Horror Movie" but it's actually good. |

03.26.12 | "A Tale of Two Sisters"

VinVal
03.26.12 | Granted there are many good movies but not true horror mostly suspense and the like

03.26.12 | okay i get that alien isnt always classified as horror, and 2001 almost never is, but what else here isn't? |
Thane
03.26.12 | evil dead is the best. |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | its classified as horror where ever you buy it. a human being has never been so terrifying as anthony hopkins is in it. and you have a guy kidnapping girls and making a skin suit a la texas chainsaw massacre. im having trouble not seeing the horror in it. |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | no i dont mind i am open for debate. i guess i understand that it's not a full on horror film. and ive seen let the right one in at least a half dozen times. great movie. ive been to scared too see let me in though, though i have heard some decent things about it. same w/ the american girl with the dragon tattoo |

03.26.12 | exactly |
paxman
03.26.12 | So if it's got aliens or astronauts in it it's not horror. Some people are dumb.
28 Days Later is a classic in my opinion, although you might not have listed it because it's not an American film.
Also, David Cronenberg (The Fly, Videodrome) |
Hyperion1001
03.26.12 | "Quarantine'
god no do not watch this film, its the shot for shot american remake of [REC] and sucks compared to the original |
Vesper
03.26.12 | Plenty of great horror movies aren't even all that scary, and that's so dependent on the individual person anyway that scare factor is not a great way to distinguish if it's a great film.
'the vampire dude is gonna be in cronenberg's newest film, im actually interested to see what he does with that'
Yeah, I'm actually kind of hopeful for that. RPattz is clearly trying his hardest to distance himself from the Twilight franchise... unsurprisingly. |
VinVal
03.26.12 | start here:

branch out from there, my personal fave horror movies are usually asian, those fucks sure know how to scare the shit out of people
and you might want to dig a little deeper into the classics if you like that style |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | i like cronenberg, but sometimes i think he comes on a little too heavy with the commentary. still makes great films though |
VinVal
03.26.12 | "Quarantine'
god no do not watch this film, its the shot for shot american remake of [REC] and sucks compared to the original [2] |

this x50000000 theres a big difference between gore and atmosphere horror and suspense horror |

ive seen most of those, and the ring and the descent aren't that great. and insidious, though above average, wasn't something i would jump to recommend |

03.26.12 | i honestly think hes better than both kubrick and lynch |
AngelofDeath
03.26.12 | I'd probably agree with that, though I like A Clockwork Orange better than any of Cronenberg's films individually. |
Hyperion1001
03.26.12 | cronenbergs filmography is just so fucking solid |
mbrigham1
03.26.12 | hard to knock much of kubrick's stuff either. not saying i disagree with you, i haven't seen enough of cronenberg's work to form an educated opinion, but kubrick is rather renowned |

03.26.12 | well it was halloween night my senior year and i was having some friends over (one of which was this really hot chick with big tits who i would eventually date for a bit) and i wanted some horror movies for the night. so i went to the record store and was looking for some cheap stuff that might be cool, and while i was looking this old dude comes up and starts looking through and eventually talking about horror movies to me
he went on to describe his fav movie, it was about these voodoo people and he went on and on about this one scene where the voodoo master touches this lady on the cheek and it gets infected and spiders pop out of it, naturally i thought that was awesome but he said they didnt have it
he went to another part of the store and i kept looking, only to find this movie called The serpent and the rainbow that was exactly like he described. so i ran over to him and asked if this was it, and he said yes. so i was like sweet and went and bought it and went home to get ready.
i got home and we decided to watch that first. 30 min in and no spider scene, hour in and no spider scene, movie was over and no spider scene. i was blown, and i think that disappointment has something to do with why i now hate that film |
Vesper
