| Thoughts On Music
About a year ago I started using Sputnik regularly (although I didn't make this account until more recently)and since then my music habits have changed dramatically. I've always enjoyed music, but I only ever had 5 or 6 artists that I would actively listen to. These artists would fluctuate over the years but I rarely strayed from a few genres. Coming to Sputnik really opened my eyes to the vast amount of music that is out there and I began to listen to artists outside my comfort zone. At first, I would go the charts section and listen to the highest rated albums and, while I didn't like a lot of the stuff, I found some absolutely amazing albums that I'd been missing out on all my life (Pink Moon, Art of Motion, Hospice, Watch Out!, Cities to name a few). Then I started actively reading the reviews for new albums as they were posted on the home page. I decided that, for 2011, I wanted to form an opinion on as many albums as I possibly could. It's a really rewarding experience to listen to new albums day after day and at first I really enjoyed myself, but it became overwhelming. It got to the point where I would listen to an album only once and immediately rate it. Then I would find myself coming back to album and after a few more listens my outlook on the album would change completely. By the end of 2011 there were still dozens of albums that I wanted to listen to. Suddenly I had to make an end of year list that accurately represented my listening habits for 2011, but I was troubled by the fact that there was so much music out there in 2011 that I hadn't formed a full opinion on. I would spend hours trying to put together a list only to come back to it the next day and realize I didn't agree with it anymore. Maybe I'm the only one who had this problem, but I was genuinely obsessed with making a perfect year end list filled with my top 100 albums. But I've come to the realization that my current lifestyle simply doesn't support forming an opinion on 100 albums each year. I don't think it's fair to rate an album after only 1 listen and set it aside to never listen to again. I want to be able to listen to it many times and come to a decision about my true feelings of the album, but I just can't do that being a 3rd year full-time undergrad student with a part-time job. So I've decided that instead of listening to every album that comes out each year, I will simply choose the ones that interest me the most. I've also decided that a 100 album year-end list is too ambitious (I mean who cares what my 87th favourite album of 2011 was?). 20 years from now when I look back at 2011 I only want to see the albums that truly mattered to me. Sure, there are tons of albums that came out this year that I didn't give a proper chance, but hundreds of albums come out each year and I'm sure I"ll find more stuff I'll love in the coming years.So this is it, my list of albums in 2011 in that truly mattered to me.
