10 years of Mort.

hello all. as you may have read in ars' lift, we share the exact same join date. As such, it is also my ten year anniversary today. oh joy. here is a sentimental and self-indulgent list about music and me made from some of my 5s, old loves and random thoughts
1The Smiths
Hatful of Hollow

How Soon Is Now? - One of my first musical memories if of being in my dads car as a child and him playing How Soon Is Now? The foreboding, ominous and bizarre atmosphere mixed with the smell of car leather has stuck in my mind since
2Scissor Sisters
Scissor Sisters

When this came out it took the UK by storm and I was 8. This album is campy, fun and a bit ridiculous. I love it and have good memories of it
3Enter Shikari
Take to the Skies

Lets just forward now to the age of 11-12. I was on holiday in autralia visiting family and my older sister lent me her ipod. Mothership by Enter Shikari came on and I was enamoured. It was the most 'epic', intense thing id ever heard at that point (aswell as the first track with harsh vocals id ever heard) and would spark an obsession that still endures to this day. I love you Enter Shikari. Thank you for being bizarre and dumb and silly and serious.
4Alexisonfire
Crisis

Around this same time I discovered Alexisonfire through the track This Could Be Anywhere In The World. They became my intro to emo music.
5Slipknot
Slipknot

I was a stereotypical toxic emo kid who associated with Slipknots cringe lyrics, yes I had a poster on my wall of the boys and knew all their names, numbers and masks. Oh god why
6Hot Cross
Risk Revival

MW2 came out and like most teenage boys I was obsessed with it. There was (is) a youtube called Blame Truth who one day mentioned his name came from a Hot Cross song. This was my introduction to 'proper' post-hardcore and would also be my gateway to screamo
7Saetia
A Retrospective

The first screamo/skramz band I ever heard. Bless.
8Dance Gavin Dance
Downtown Battle Mountain II

In the comments to a Hot Cross track I saw someone comparing them to DGD. I checked them out and hated them but soon found I loved them as I became hooked on diddly diddly dids
9The Fall of Troy
Doppelganger

Although actually this had already come out and was on guitar hero 3 (F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X) so I was already noodling
10Fear Before
Odd How People Shake

Around this time I started paying attention to record labels and came across Rise Records due to DGD. One day they uploaded this and its melting pot of screamo, metal and core was perfectly poised to entrance me. GOAT band
11Aphex Twin
Come to Daddy

My drum teacher showed me Aphex Twin and I am forever thankful
12Portraits Of Past
Cypress Dust Witch

Got heavily into screamo as a teenager. The following were my jams.
13Funeral Diner
The Underdark
14Wow, Owls!
Pick Your Patterns
15The Saddest Landscape
You Will Not Survive
16The Dismemberment Plan
Emergency & I

I was too young to fully 'get this' but its sporky, nerdy demeanour left a lasting impression and certainly informed my love for skronkin, spoofin, sporkin rock music (see U.S Maple). I get this now more in my 20s.
17The Dillinger Escape Plan
Calculating Infinity

I have a distinct memory of playing Saints Row 3 around the age of 16 and being blown away by Farewell to Mona Lisa. It wasnt very long before I was obsessed with mathcore, grind and metalcore in general
18Bring Me the Horizon
Suicide Season

Forgot to mention how obsessed I was with this band when this album and There Is A Hell was out lol.
19Converge
Jane Doe

Probably found out about Converge around when AWLWLB came out due to the Aimless Arrow video. Took me a while to really get into them but theyve been a favourite ever since. Still listen to Jane Doe pretty often.
20Daughters
Hell Songs

This is the crowning achievement of the spazz grind scene.
21At the Drive-In
Relationship of Command

The first vinyl record I ever bought.
22Glassjaw
Worship and Tribute

Cant remember if I heard of these guys due to sput but I believe that may be the case.
23XTC
Skylarking

I do not remember how I heard of these guys but their britishness is endearing and they make me feel happy
24Prefab Sprout
Steve McQueen

At university one month I got the flu and was very sick on the sofa watching random music videos. The King of Rock n Roll came on and I loved it. Now maybe my favourite band of all time.
25Shiner
Lula Divinia (Remaster)

Check Shiner
26Q and Not U
No Kill No Beep Beep

Godbless the sassers of the world
27Coalesce
Functioning on Impatience

Godbless the skronkers of the world
28Down I Go
Gods

A real cult band who deserved much more than the uk scene maybe gave them. One of the most inventive and fun groups out there.
29Oxbow
The Narcotic Story

Refined, sophisticated, sickly and foreboding
30Polvo
Today's Active Lifestyles

Makes me think of sunny days
31Slowdive
Pygmalion

Makes me think of cold days by the window at my uni desk, reading philosophy with a cup of tea. Good times.
32U.S. Maple
Long Hair in Three Stages

Skronks, spoofs, sporks and sasses.
33Elle Milano
Acres Of Dead Space Cadets

A UK indie band my sister was into whose singer later became Clarence Clarity. A forgotten gem.
34Hum
Downward Is Heavenward

Got into these guys a couple of years ago. Make me feel warm and hopeful
35Unwound
Leaves Turn Inside You

My favourite album of all time. A perfect mix of the alt-rock genres that takes me through a whole spectrum of emotions. R.I.P Vern Rumsey
36Coalesce
Functioning on Impatience
