10 Favorites Songs Over 10 Minutes

Songs that fly by as if they're short.
10Kate Bush
50 Words for Snow

"Lake Tahoe" - 11:11

A sad piano ballad about a woman who loses her dog. The dog dies, but the dog finds her again in the afterlife. :(
9The Velvet Underground
White Light/White Heat

"Sister Ray" - 17:27

Noisy, bluesy, dirty, and certainly a discography highlight. It was apparently done in only 1 take and about an orgy. Nice.
8Erykah Badu
New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh

"Out of Mind, Just in Time" - 10:22

This song is all over the place and changes a lot. I guess that makes it kind of proggy? I like the effects on her voice and the emotion she puts forth a lot.
7Stereolab
Dots and Loops

"Refractions in the Plastic Pulse" - 17:33

Imagine having a 17-minute song with only 3 lines of lyrics repeated over and over a bunch of different ways? Sounds like a disaster, but Stereolab makes it work amazingly.
6Fela Kuti
Zombie

"Zombie" - 12:26

A song about how the Nigerian military obeys authority like zombies. This song got his mother murdered and it's damn funky. Powerful, political, and catchy is a dangerous combo.
5Robovine
How to Start a Business

"How to Start a Business" - 10:08

Like weird modern psych stuff? Do yourself a favor. It's a humorous and snarky rant about the art/music industry. Lots of colorful synths, trumpets, and bass here too.
4David Bowie
Station to Station

"Station to Station" - 10:08

Bowie doing arty proggy stuff on his best 70s album. Drugs, power, the European canon, it's all here!
3Mercury Rev
Boces

"Meth of a Rockette's Kick" - 10:30

Really pretty orchestral neo-psychedelia. Lots of feedback and strong imagery about who knows what. It's very 90s.
2Parliament
Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome

"Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk (Pay Attention - B3M)" - 10:10

The best Parliament song. The bassline is infectious, the vocals are strange and intense. It's all about an alien who refuses to dance. And there are some nursery rhymes thrown in because why not?
1Can
Tago Mago

"Halleluhwah" - 18:28

Pretty sure this is in my top 5 songs of all time. Those drums are consistently engaging and repetitively rhythmic. The way he says "Halleluhwah" towards the end is such an awesome and fun climax. and Yeah lots of psych guitar noodling, and pulsing bass guitar. What's not to love?
