Round 3: Inverted Umbrella Competition

2 are out and 19 are still in. CamiloG was disqualified for being too late to the deadline! The new deadline to get your round 2 songs in is 5pm EST on November 12th!
1The Meters
Rejuvenation

The rules are the same as last round:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. This round is [funk]. Syncopated rhythmic bass grooves. Funk rock, synth funk, jazz funk, funk funk, hell even funk metal. While funk is tied to soul, don't pick soul that isn't funky or you'll lose points!

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)

***Winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's possible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.***
2Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
The Golden Year

Mort.: “The Way I Feel”

Very radio friendly. The vocals seem kinda weak. Radio friendly frat bro dude synthpop?

2.9/5 (SAFE)
3FM-84
Atlas

budgie: “Running In The Night

This would be fun in a club, but I can’t say I’m too into it. Very 80 influenced, moreso than maybe most modern synthpop somehow.

3.3/5 (SAFE)
4Tweaker
2 a.m. Wakeup Call

SlothcoreSam: “Crude Sunlight"

Ooh a Jennifer Chales feature. Love her! Huge depaturture from the last two. Spacious and slow so far. Definitely very alternative rock in its approach to industrial. Sensual as always. I do wish there was a little more oomph to this. My favorite Elysian Fields songs I suppose are a tad more intense?

5Einsturzende Neubauten
Halber Mensch

Porcupinetheater: “Yü-gung (Fütter Mein Ego)”ein

Finally, something that fits what I was hoping for! Weird vocals (in a good way.) I’ve thought about getting into them for a while now, maybe this will be my puh to actually do it.) Really builds up and is very aggressive! I dig it!

4/5 (SAFE)
6The Cruxshadows
Frozen Embers

ffs: “Deception”

Very darkwave. Depeche Mode vibes! Not bad at all. That violin is cool and the synth line is fun. Maybe not the most memorable though.

3.6/5 (SAFE)
7Diseno Corbusier
El alma de la estrella

Havey: “Golpe de Amistad”

Ooh, cool beat. Weird vocals, but in a good way. Wish it had proper lead vocals. Seem very much like a loop, like it’s mising a hook. The aesthetic is on point as hell though, but the structure leaves a lot to be desired.

Pangea:

Very energetic so far. I don’t like that pickup much honestly. I feel like I’m at an EDM festival right now. Vocals came in and uh, this isn’t it. I’d be more forigving if this song wasn’t so long, but I kinda hate this.

2.2/5 (ELIMINATED!)
9Oppenheimer Analysis

someone: “The Devil's Dancers” *(from Oppenheimer Analysis s/t)

I like the aesthetic! Chill, but dancey! The chorus is really strong too! Simple, but effective.

夢之駭客 Dream Hacker

JohnnyoftheWell: “Overlap”

The synths kind of sound like Jew’s harps. Slower main section, but it’s cool. I like the percussion and the dreamy atmosphere. Didn’t blow me away, but it’s good.

3.8/5 (SAFE)
11PVA
Blush

PotsyTater: “Comfort Eating”

Off the bat: good personality driven vocals. Love the beat too and the progression of the song is neat. Choppy keyboard solo with cowbell, woo.

4.5/5 (SAFE)
12Magdalena Bay
Mercurial World

BlazingBlitzer: “You Lose!

Very modern in terms of aesthetic. Feels anthemic. Can’t say I dig this much, but I don’t hate it.

3/5 (SAFE)
13Skinny Puppy
VIVIsectVI

fogza: “VX Gas Attack”

Industrial to a tee.Good vocals, cool enough beat. A bit basic, and maybe not catchy enough.

3.5 + (0.5 from winning last round) = 4/5
14Dr. Steel
Dr. Steel II: Eclectic Boogaloo

Trifolium: “Lament for a Toy Factory”

Is this meme industrial? It’s weird polka stream punk or something. The beat from the pickup is cool though. I hate to see, but the vocals have gotten very Mike Patton, which isn’t working for me. Weird outro. I’m mixed on this, but I’m mostly negative.

2.8/5 (SAFE)
15Out Hud
Let Us Never Speak of it Again

Kompys2000: “Old Nude”

This is bright and poppy, but maybe a tad boring. The synths are okay. Not for me, but not terrible.

16mind.in.a.box
Crossroads

pizzamachine: “Amnesia”

I don’t like the vocals much, but the beat’s engaging enough. Yeah not really too interesting. Back noise vibes?

2.8/5 (SAFE)
17Stan Ridgway
The Big Heat

GhandhiLion: “The Big Heat”

This vocals are oddly conversational. It’s cute, but I don’t know if I like it much beyond “cuteness.” Is it wrong that I’m getting They Might Be Giants vibes here, if they were more synthpop, that is.

3.5/5 (SAFE)
18Front 242
Front By Front

protokute: “Headhunter V3.0"

Good beat so far. I like the vocals. One of the mot interesting percussions chosen so far. I like it!

3.8/5 (SAFE)
19Charly Garcia
Clics Modernos

Conmaniac: “Nos Siguen Pegando Abajo (Pecado Mortal)”

New wave as hell. There’s some minor synthpop elements though! I like the guitar line and the synths are wacky, so this is cool.

3.9/5 (SAFE)
20North Central
K9 Frequencies

JeffereyPiggletein: “Side A” (by North Central from K9 Frequences)

Okay, so weird as talking over some noise crackles. Somehow more tolerable than I expected, but god is it BORING. Now they’re talking about molesting a dog. What the fuck bro. How’d you even find sick shit like this? Oh thank god, the noise is back and it’s like a thunderstorm with a buzzsaw going, okay. Oh lord, the weird bestiality convesations are back. I’m worried about you, Park. The noise sections feel like a saving grace. Fuck you for making me listen to those words, I want to remain innocent.

1/5 (ELIMINATED!)
21Liaisons Dangereuses
Liaisons Dangereuses

BitterJalapenoJr: “Los Niños Del Parque” (Liaisons Dangereusses from Liaisons Dangereusses)

The vocals are a little flat, but the beat is awesome. Okay this rules. Vocals even grew hard. Simple, but a huge bop.

4.6/5 (ROUND WINNER! [+0.5 will be added to his next round score])
22Late of the Pier
Fantasy Black Channel

CugnoBrasso: “Focker”

More dance punk. Synthy enough for me to count it. Kind of boring if I’m being honest. Wait, it has another exciting ending. Jut like the Late of the Pier song from last round. Weird coinsedence.
