Although I was born in France, I live in Brussels since I'm 5 years old so imma pay respect to a Brusseleir homie, Swing. He makes *chill*, conscious hip hop, with layered and complex instrumentals |

06.29.20 | hey dedex how do you fill up the list with those general blank entries? it makes a bit easier to see how many spots are left |
dedex
06.29.20 | I think you need to choose one album as the "blank entry" and then fill it up until 31
that's how I'd do it |
dedex
06.29.20 | like always put Jaccob Gardner - Cabinet of Curiosities and you should be good |
Pangea
06.29.20 | hmm do you mean misspelling the album? I tried that and adding blank items but that doesn't seem to work

I'd say just copy paste what you put for your own rec, people will get these are the "free spots" |

tancred - rowing (from the album nightstand)
this song really captures the spirit of amsterdam, the city i used to hate as a kid but now love living in. tancred's descriptions of the streets and canals with mildly depressing undertones, and, of course, weed and sex, are simply perfect

06.29.20 | so what if my song not about my city, but about the culture that among others encapsulates my city? |
someone
06.29.20 | or rather it is lyrically loosely based on czech folklore, but musically very indicative of the sounds and music you'd hear in a czech village. so it is musically about my city as well, even if not lyrically.
does that work as a loophole? |
Pangea
06.29.20 | It sounds like it's related to the city, even if it's not directly about it. So that sounds fine to me. It actually sounds really interesting, I like that it involves the local culture. I approve |

06.29.20 | Vladimír Václavek, Iva Bittová - Vzpomínka
album: Bílé inferno
This song and album are heavily inspired by traditional Czech poetry style using a lot of free-rhyme and realistic settings, while being very vague. The music is Czech countryside gypsy music fused with guitar folk, also played in traditional gypsy tunes and rhythms. So as a song it is not necessarily about my city (Prague), but with lyrics based on tradition and folklore and music indicative of sounds and tunes played in a local village, it is thematically and aesthetically about my city.

I'm from setting of the show Fargo (which isn't Fargo, it's Bemidji, Minnesota). 07.03.20 | "Clear The Air"
I already like this. The bells are very pretty. Great vocals. This is exactly the kinda music I eat up like candy. It's incredibly dated, but hey if you're gonna sound dated 1966-1969 psychedelic pop is the best choice to emulate. Damn it got a bit chaotic at the end!
4.5/5
"Richesse"
Sexy vibe so far. Oh no trap snares, the herpes of modern music! This is fine. Comes off as background music. It's fine.
2.9/5
"Blister in the Sun"
Who doesn't know this song? I always liked the bass on this a lot and each instrument is distinct, catchy, and memorable all on thier own, which is commendable. I'm fairly certain that this song is one big euphemism about masturbating. The whisper part is really entertaining and the pickup right after is very satisfying. The album this is from is pretty meh overall though, but Blister and Kiss Off are classics.
4.7/5 |
Pangea
07.03.20 | Blister in the Sun - but of a weird song, it's not really my thing. 2.7 |

No wonder the sound engineer had him mic'd so low. Shut the fuck up! A bunch of distorted guitars. I get it, we'll start real low, then we'll go real loud. 'Cause that's never been done before. Bet he gets all quiet again for the end. Yep, it's quieting down. I don't know, 2? I get crabby when they give me a headache. |

07.08.20 | Plugging a track for you guys, since Pangea asked me. This is a song called "Tu Frialdad" from Seville's flamenco prog rock band Triana. I reviewed this album recently so I enjoyed revisiting it. Triana were pioneers in mixing their roots in flamenco music with the prog rock scene that was raging all over Europe in the late 60s and early 70s. This is one of their best songs, and the melody really reminds me of my hometown, so I hope you enjoy it.
Note: "Tu Frialdad" belongs to the album "Un Encuentro". |

07.08.20 | J Trauma - Oh dear. Hip hop - my mortal enemy. OK, pretty sedate, at least. Kind of moody. Not too bad, except that the last 25 seconds where they slow it down and repeat the last part is intolerable. 2.3 |
ArsMoriendi
07.08.20 | "Rowing"
Plainer than vanilla ice cream indie rock. Did she just pronounce "river," "riv-ee-ay-ere"? Fuck that. In one "e-ay-ere" and out the other.
2.5/5
"Fiction Friction"
Nice guitar so far, catches my ear. Vocals are mumbly and plain though. These vocals are trying so hard to be Slint. Good bass though. Overall, pretty enjoyable, actually.
3.8/5
"Hero (I Don't Wanna Be)"
Is this Weird Al singing? Shitty vocals, bland instrumental, and of course an "inspiring anthem" build. Not for me.
2.1/5
"Welcome To The Black Parade"
More "inspiring anthem" shit. So fast to jump to the scream whining too. This really is the absolute worst "2000s scene kid" nonsense. Gives me horrible flashbacks to the kids with the Jack Skellington backpacks and Brokencyde armbands from my former high school. Pop-punk/emo pop, whatever you wanna call it, is so bad.
1.5/5
"R.I.P."
Obviously terrible, but he's actually from my hometown, unlike a lot of you copouts bending the rules in an attempt you find something good. ;)
(Can't rate cuz it's my rec/5) |
Pangea
07.08.20 | Rowing - Pretty good Amsterdam observations. Song itself is just alright, i don't think it has much going for it. the chorus is a little weak too. 3.0
Fiction Friction - great guitar work. i like how dynamic the song is. the vocals are whatever but not really bothersome. 3.6
Hero (I Don't Wanna Be) - No i don't like this one. Really hate these vocals. 2.0
Welcome to the Black Parade - i never really listened to my chemichal romance, but i guess they're big in the emo "scene" bands. this is certainly ambitious, but i can't say i was swept up by it. this is fine i guess, i don't really like the marching drums, but everything else is fine. 2.9
"R.I.P" - yeah this is trap song alright. i don't like the guys flow and the song is pretty unremarkable 2.5

07.08.20 | Clear The Air - So much Syd Barrett it's almost an insult to him, because the music isn't very good 2.3/5
Richesse - That's a cute cover. Good vibes, but not too exciting. 3/5
Blister in the Sun - Heh, the opening is used for a Danish science radio show. Nice to hear the rest. Pretty fun. 3/5 |
dedex
07.09.20 | 9. Vzpomínka - ok this is fucking weird, but I dig ahrd. Everything is so intense: the guitar strumming, the percussions, the chants (omg these chants). Super duper dope. 4.0 |

07.09.20 | black parade: used to love it, love to meme it, can't listen to it as a serious song anymore.. 2.0 rip
rip: my god haha can this guy never do vocals ever again plz? sounds like that pink guy club banger song but, eh, worse.. 1.5
vzpominka: really weird, pretty cool. feel like i'm in some kinda hrad which is dope but it's also a tad too long, 3.5 |

07.09.20 | 1. Clear the Air - This is the kinda psych that I can't fault particularly harshly, but also does so little for me that I kinda wish I could :[ the break at around 1:40 was kinda neat. ok 2.5
2. Richesse - dedex was born in France wow I definitely never knew this. I am struggling to have an opinion on this. Arrangement is nice but I don't love the tones. Not sure why. Mhm 3.0
3. Blister in the Sun - This makes me wish I was hungover and I'm not sure why. Fun track, I can vibe with this a fair bit. Doesn't outstay its welcome either 3.5
4. Rowing - Mopey mope mope this is so derivative I wanna slam it but I'm feeling the mope. The mopey mope tempo does not do it favours after the first couple of minutes, but I guess a mood is a mood 3.2
6. Hero (I Don't Wanna Be) - I really hate America sometimes. Just realised there's a youtube playlist - neat shit, thank you! First line of the chorus reminds me of that 4 Non Blondes banger that imma go jam now. This is ham but I guess it's catchy. 2.4 |

07.09.20 | 7. Welcome to the Black Parade - Indisputable classic that will forever be kryptonite to all those who cry privately at how trash they are at karaoke *scrolls up* sounds about right 4.9
8. RIP - Wtf how is this an Ars rec? Love it when artists incorporate phone sounds into their trax, gonna give this a boost just for that 2.5
9. Vzpominka - Nice. Very cool, distinctive sounds; love how freeform that vocalise is throughout, like, the whole thing. Seems a little overlong atm, but I can imagine this being sweeeeet if you really got into it 3.8 |
Egarran
07.09.20 | Rowing - Mediocre strumming, mediocre singing, melody heard a 1000 times before, this is the perfect average song. 2.5/5
Fiction Friction - Holy fuck I hate this. And at 1:50 it just got 100x worse. 1.3/6
Hero - Well it's slightly orginal! But then it got annoying. They should listen to some Beatles albums. 2.6/5 |

07.09.20 | I'll put up Kingston Upon Thames boy Jono McCleery, friend of my brother who produced most of this album - an ordeal that put him off making a living from the music industry and to instead concentrate on the visual arts. Ninja Tunes changed his spec about the album about ten times, originally it was going to be more an electronic influenced album. Anyway final product was still alright:

07.09.20 | Iva Bittova & Vladimir Vaclavek - Some nice violins to start with. Kind of a mournful sound, now joined by some guitar. So far, I'm liking this. Not sure about this vocalist, though. 07.09.20 | Clear The Air: Psych niceness. I think I saw this dude at Lowlands a while back. Was nice. This went all sorts of ways, sometimes without me expecting it to. 3.4
Richesse: Some parts are a little too velvety smooth, but overall this is good. Last half a minute or so is very great. 3.5
Blister In The Sun: Hihihi this is funny. A nice sweet tune. Love how the dude doesn't care about syllables per note and such. Yup, put a smile to my face. 3.4
Rowing: The tone of this is nice. Its sluggishness in the heavier parts. Her voice is cool too. 3.4
Fiction Friction: Omg I loved Bologna when I was there. Love the lush sound of the guitars here. Nice and whiny vox. Omg why are the 90s always the best ever. This is nice, the freakout is alright too. 3.5 |

07.09.20 | Hero (I Don't Wanna Be): Ha, I don't know about this. It is fun I guess, but this really is not my thing at all. 2.0

R.I.P: WhoooOOOAAAAA that's a complete 180 in energy level coming here from WHEEENIIIIWAAAS AAAYOOUNNGBOOOYYYYY MYY FAAATHAAAAAAAAAA. Hmmmmmm. His vox are yucky. The beat is silly too. No thanks. 1.8
Vzppomínka: I don't know about this one. Nice to hear! Not something I'd listen to a lot, but some parts of it are very nice. Plus the pulsing rhythm is lovely too. 3.2

07.12.20 | looks like ill just miss out but i'll give some feedback for the ones submitted
1. Clear the Air - 3.4
Very nice and fluffy but doesn't really progress that much. It's a sweet vibe though so I can dig it.
2. Richesse - 3.6
Beat is beautiful, very blissed out and lush. I have a friend super into french-language music so I'm pretty used to this style of delivery, could use a little more power or infliction to really lift this though.
3. Blister in the Sun 4.2
An obvious pick but hey it still goes. Extremely ahead of it's time.
4. Rowing - 2.9
The prechorus is lovely, but everything else is fairly generic and unimpressive, especially on the lyrical front.
5. Fiction Friction 4.4
Best Unwound closer? It's up there, great raw post-hardcore energy. |
Sinternet
07.12.20 | 6. Hero (I Don't Wanna Be) 1.4
Dogshit, no energy, and it's just annoying. The intro skit is one of the worst things I've ever heard. only not a 1 because the production is ok for what I assume is a band making shitty CD's to substitute for proper gifts to family members at Christmas.
7. Welcome to the Black Parade 3.1
Yeah I liked this song when I was 15, but it really doesn't hold up today. Three Cheers will always be the better album.
8. R.I.P 2.6
When he sounds like discount BONES he's fine, when he does the other voice in the second half he loses it. Beat is dece I guess.
9. Vzpominka 4.3
I fucking love this kind of twisted traditional european folk so this was a great listen, i'll have to check out the whole album.

07.12.20 | 1. “Clear the Air” - Very accurate recreation of 60s baroque pop. I appreciate the commitment to making retro music with an organic feel, but I don’t feel anything towards the music when listening to it. I’d rather listen to Tame Impala. - 3/5
2. “Richesse” - I don’t know the language but I can feel the vibe. Reading the lyrics, there’s an attitude I can stand by. Really dig the loops and drum sounds on this one. Voice is cool too. Did not expect the beat changes at the end, so that was nice. - 3.6/5
3. “Blister in the Sun” - I’ve heard this song since I was a child, unaware of the lyrical content or meaning, just blissful in the sun. It’s fun to come back to. As it stands now, I’m just waiting for it to end. 3.2/5
4. “Rowing” - Pretty cool song. Kind of reminds me of Say Anything on a good day. With that feeling comes the same cringe lyric moments like “The world is easy when I get high/I play those jukebox songs and wait to die.” And that’s the chorus! Cute song but ineffectual. 3.1/5
5. “Fiction Friction” - What a bummer of a song, must have been a shit town. I love Unwound, and I think they have better songs that evoke a similar feeling to this, but I understand why you chose this one. 3.8/5
6. “Welcome to the Merry-Go-Round” - To think we were THIS CLOSE to getting Jeff Rosenstock on this list and his many songs about New York. I’m more sour about that than having to listen to this song. The guitar and vocal duality is pretty interesting during parts of the song. I’m not sure why so many people are shitting on this one. It doesn’t have much to say, the mood is pretty vague (am I supposed to be happy or numb?), the instrumentation is impressive if not standard. Idk. - 3.3/5 |
deathofasalesman
07.12.20 | 7. “Welcome to the Black Parade” - This song is just a weird Queen impression with pop punk riffs. Chorus is the best part of the song. I don’t wanna endure 5 mins of this. 2.3/5
8. “R.I.P.” - That was a pretty good Bones impression for a 16 year old. It’s also nice to see that one kid who never raised his hand in math class but knew all the answers is making waves in the hip-hop world. 2.9/5
9. “Vzpomínka” - First traditional folk rec, nice. I like the improvisational nature of the song. There are these ongoing layers coming in and out of focus. It’s very stylized and impressive, musically. - 3.7/5
10. “Enjoy the Silence” - Pots is right, this one is unfair. One of the all-time great bands’ all-time great song? Let’s just bring in the Led Zeppelin recs while we’re at it. Who’s from London that wants to rec “Stairway to Heaven”? Come on, dude. - 5/5
11. “The Call I Follow” - I was not feeling this song until the change 2 and a half mins in. Black metal with a slightly metallic hardcore vibe, I dig that stuff A LOT. I’m not crazy about the power metal guitar solo near the end, so if they do that a lot on their album I may not be fully on board. Anyway. - 3.9/5
12. “Don’t Call Wagga Wagga Wagga” - I really don’t like modern studio recordings of folk songs in this style. It borders on children’s music with production this crisp. - 2.2/5 |

Welcome To The Black Parade - Never heard anything from this, always heard it was shit, so I admit I was a bit curious. And I guess it's kinda terrible but that's more a genre thing. If I was 12 I bet I would love this. 2.5/5

07.13.20 | "Vzpomínka"
Someone is from The Czech Republic? Why are all of the coolest users not from North America. This is very nice. No idea what they're saying, but it comes as very traditional with vocals that sort of remind me of Lisa Gerard. Wow her voice sounds like a violin here, neat. Pizzicato is underutilized, I swear.
3.9/5
"Enjoy the Silence"
I mean, doesn't everyone already know and like this song? This is gonna be the month's winner. Engaging percussion, smooth sexy vocals, and a catchy chorus. Oh yeah the CODA SECTIONNNN. I don't know if your link includes the coda just because I decided to listen to this off of my personal library, but I just wanna say that it's super creepy and evil and also awesome.
4.2/5
"The Call I Follow"
Serious Hungarian man rants over some mellow metal guitar uh oh. ROOOAR CHUG RIFF RIFF ROAAAAAAR CHUG RIFF RIFF. Yup, extreme metal. Who invented chugging? Fuck them. Now it's mellow and floaty, okay. Say no to bass drum abuse.
1.5/5
"Don't Call Wagga Wagga Wagga"
Well isn't this the exact opposite. Cheerful goofy folk-pop? This song is like a cultural shock and a fever dream. I wanna use this in a horror movie for a death scene. Apparently Wagga Wagga, Kin Kin, Pindi Pindi, Grog Grog, etc are all names of Australian towns and he's saying you can't say only half of their names or whatever. Yeah, this is totally perfect for a death scene in a horror. a young 20-something guy is in a locked room and can't get out and THIS SONG just starts playing and he's freaking out because it's so cutesy and he doesn't know where it's coming and the masked killer sneaks up behind him and guts him.
3/5
"The Messenger"
Spacey and soulful. I like the keys. Not much to say about this one, but it's good. Maybe slightly forgettable?

07.15.20 | Black Sun Empire - I rated this yesterday, and I recorded it on the worksheet, but I must have forgotten to hit send. 3.1. I no longer remember why.
Bob Dylan - Once upon a time, there was a time when you didn't have to know how to sing or play more than 3 chords to be considered a genius. I actually like some Dylan, but I always thought this one was pretty blah. It's as simple as it gets musically, all verses, no bridge and not even any choruses. And as for the lyrics, I'd like to have heard things from the perspective of the poor sap he's singing about. He always was a self righteous little prick. I'll give it a 2.8 -- 2.5 for being average, and an extra .3 for being Dylan. |
deathofasalesman
07.16.20 | 13. “Messenger” - Why did OP add the word “the” to a lot of these titles? Anyway. Song is an audio engineer’s dream. Vocals are layered well, and the echoey instrumental provides a cozy backdrop to this delicate track. I feel like I’m driving a Cadillac through Candyland with the windows rolled down. Wish it had a couple different parts to it and didn’t end so soon. 3.8/5
14. “Don’t You” - Lovely drum and bass, indeed. Adding this one to my cardio playlist cuz it keeps the blood rushing. Can’t say much beyond that. 3.7/5
15. “Positively 4th Street” - I always loved what The Byrds did with Dylan’s songs. This is another example of when I prefer The Byrds over the Bob. 3.2/5
16. “23” - Very unique-sounding track. Love the drums on this one. Vocals can get kind of annoying, probably why I never got into this band. 3.3/5 |

07.17.20 | DiMaggio - Muffled production, sounds like the 40s. Maybe this was recorded by the actual Joe DiMaggio. Oh crap, it's hip hop. And the damned thing is over 9 minutes long. OK, don't panic - let me look around the room and see if there's something I can use to take myself out with. Hmm. No ropes. And I'm wearing slippers right now, so there's no shoelaces. Wait it stopped. Oh no, it's just going on with what sounds like an entirely different track. Maybe I can bludgeon myself with my laptop. Ooff!... Not working. Stupid thing is made of some kind of plastic. God, this part is awful. A lot of the time, even if I hate the guy's verses, I at least like the backing track. But this is all atonal and shit. OK, almost five minutes in and he's switched sounds again. This is three entirely different songs so far, all in the same one track. The pianist and DiMaggio both sound drunk, that special kind of 4am-in-the-bar kind of drunk. Oh, and there's some delightful white noise at the end, unless that's supposed to be him sniffing coke. (Which it might seriously be.) I'm gonna give it a 1.2. It gets the extra .2 because it's not actually the worst rec I've ever heard on here. 1.2 |

07.18.20 | 10. Enjoy the Silence - Yeah, this is a consensus classic (as this thread has reasserted lol). Not my favourite on Violator, but an enduring winner. Never a bad time to hear. 4.1/5
11. The Call I Follow - Couldn't pick this band out in a crowd, but I kinda dug this for what it's worth. The first half was fits and starts in a way that had me on board, not so sure about the ultraevil hyperspeed ending - didn't seem to find its feet. 3.0/5
12. Don't Call Wagga Wagga Wagga - This is so silly I can't not like it a little bit. Hmm. Wanted it to end halfway through but am sure this'd be fire in an Aus pub 2.5/5

07.18.20 | The Call I Follow: This is kind of nice! The riffs are cool, nicely melodic, don't hate the vox. It is diverse enough to keep my attention. Still don't like this particular drum sound though. I have issues with that. But despite that: 3.5
Don't Call Wagga Wagga: Hmmm yes, a cozy song, nice for in the pub, but I'm not really that pub-guy anymore. This is still fun I guess. 2.8
The Messenger: I like this, but it is a little too smooth for me, in a loungy, almost synthetic kind of way. Still enjoy it! 3.4
Positively 4th Street: Never really liked Dylan. Is that sacrilege? Perhaps. Still isn't my thing at all. Not bad obviously, but meh. That organ is the best thing about it haha. 3.0
23: The gaziness of this is good. I guess I should give this disc a try, but I'm not in the mood for it now. It will happen someday, these persons keep popping up everywhere and this was nice. 3.6 |

Great old neurofunk tune - not my favourite style of d&b but very fun in moderation, would do very well in a club. Actually think I've heard a couple of classmates at uni play this out before, they definitely have done some by these guys before. 3.7
15. Positively 4th Street
I like Dylan, and he's at his most biting and vicious here. It's not in my top Dylan tunes, but it's very good regardless. 4.0

Classic vocal performance, classic song. Prefer their earlier stuff but there's no albums of theirs I don't like (although never checked their last). That chorus is still heavenly. 4.3 |

07.18.20 | 17. Vagabond
This is pretty competent, beat is nice if a little too repetitive. I think the vocal delivery leaves a lot to be desired, very matter of fact and not much character. Also vocals are mixed way too low. Way too long as well, the beat switches would be cooler if they were condensed down to 5 minutes or so. It's ok. 3.1
18. Sutterville
I remember liking Giant Squid when people played them in dubtrack and plug.dj, so maybe it was just this song in particular, but dear lord this drones on aimlessly. Where's the progression? It just sounds like a lazy depressing Ween song. Actually that would be way cooler. Male/female vocal interplay is cool I guess but idk not vibing this. 2.6 |

JohnnyoftheWell
07.19.20 | Lol okay. For starters a lotta BR lyrics are written in very vague ways about seemingly specific scenarios (google the lyrics for My Impure Hair lol), probs partially because of Eng 2nd lang, and probs partially because most of their music/public personality is pretty aloof but at the same time kinda concerted in general. Sooo basically they're not ideal to read into; i once thought one of my faves from them (My Plants Are Dead) was written as sad voicemail from the narrator to her relatively recent ex, but it turned out to be adapted directly from a set of pissed off texts Kazu Makino received from one of her NY pals lol
anyway, the whole vibe of the 23 lyrics seems to me to link the arbitrariness of 23 as a favourite/focal number with the arbitrariness of whatever shit happens in life. so the idea 23, for Kazu, is just a conduit for wider ideas of excitement and potential (hence the verses that begin with the number).
the "How many times ? As long as you want / How many times ? The world will go around" refrain feels like a nod to reading potential into everything (anything can seem meaningful if you approach it that way, even a dumb prime number like 23), but also maybe a hint of how in the scheme of the whole planet, these significances are ultimately very tiny (so since none of them are that important in a grander sense, she has a certain liberty to chalk up as many as she likes without overthinking things too much).
"He was a friend of mine, he was a son of a gun ... he was a son of god" fits with the rest of the track insofar as it identifies the same person 3 times under 3 different guises, suggesting that his significance lies as much in her perception and attitude as in his actual identity (just like the idea of 23), but also knowing the band it's probably a randomly specific reference to someone irl that I can't second guess
tl;dr 23 as a lucky number = everything is seemingly random, life is full of possibilities, why not act a little wide-eyed and open yourself to them
but it also might not be that |
Egarran

Then I heard it like 3 times in a row and it reminded me how much I fucking hate Way's vocals. He is a terrible vocalist, but the hooks in this song are very strong so i don't even know dude.. 3.0
8. R.I.P. - J Trauma - Alright, I really am hesitant to be an ablest, I'm old enough to know to not make edgy jokes, but my first thought is that this sounds like if Bones had down syndrome. Does his shirt have Viper on it? 1.5
9. Vzpominka - Iva Bittova & Vladmir Vaclavek - This is really cool sounding. I like it. I love the moment from 5 minutes on. Great analysis here. 3.4
10. Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode - Another stone cold classic. Depeche Mode has been a long standing favorite of mine, and was my gateway to post punk and synth music. One of my future tattoos is gonna be the rose on the inside of my middle finger actually. So good. 4.9

07.25.20 | messengers - don't love the clean vox, song's a bit tacky, 2.8
vampire's spell - pretty fun, very straightforward, 3.3

07.25.20 | Portland Life - Yeah wow that is pretty terrible. He sure likes to say nigger. 1.8/5

07.25.20 | ooh got some catching up to do
19. Set the Ray to Jerry
An absolutely classic Pumpkins deep cut back from when they could do nothing wrong. Beautifully melancholy. 4.3
20. Zombie
This is pretty boring. The intro is way to long and kinda cringy. Sounds like Misfits if they didn't know how to write melodies and the vocalist sucked. 2.1
21. Let Me Know You're Mine
I like the vocals, the thick hazy synth textures are nice. Def hear later Arctic Monkeys here - it's better than that but I can't say it's blowing my mind. 3.1 |
Trifolium
07.26.20 | Vagabond: Love the beat, the sample (?), nicely sepia, fuzzy. The vocalist isn't necessarily my fave thing about it, but this is still good. That shift made this go somewhere I didn't want it to go at all sadly. First three minutes where very nice, the darker section was less good. Third section is nicer again. Less claustrophobic. Nicely psychedelic. 3.4
Sutterville: Interesting stuff. Like the mysterious vibe, the sax, the vocals remind me a little bit too much of Dream Theater sadly. The promise of the first few seconds wasn't justified, sorry! 2.9
Set The Ray To Jerry: Love how deep the instruments sound, but the vocals are too heavily nasal for me. 2.9
Zombie: Intro was very long. The actual song is nicely punky, love the guitar sound but the drums are not my thing. 2.8
Let Me Know You're Mine: Again, what's with me and vocalists? Am I too picky about that? Feel like I say this all the time, but these vocals put me off a little bit. Rest of the track is nicely bluesy. Bond-tune-ish maybe even. 3.1

Divaman
07.26.20 | Son of Prey - Melodic and kind of grand. I have no complaints. 3.2 |
Pangea
07.27.20 | The vampire's spell - nice riffs yeah this is cool. 3.5
guilt - this is really nice shoegaze stuff. the guitar stuff halfway through the song is really cool. 3.9
into the woods - i really like the intro and the bridge is pretty cool too. everything else i'm less into and the chorus kinda sucks. i'm conflicted on this but i guess a 3.0 will work |
dedex
07.27.20 | 25. Guilt - owyeah shoegaze stuff = gud stuff. 3.5
26. Into the Woods - yeah not vibing at all with the chorus. rest is fine but that's it. 2.6
27. Tu Frialdad - real cool stuff, imma go to Sevilla this summer so I'll be sure to blast this hard! 3.6 |
Trifolium
07.27.20 | Portland Life: The beat is a little clunky and goofy. The main dude hasn't got the best rapping skills either. Hmmm. Not bad, but could have been so much better. 3.0
Messenger: Textures never really was my thing. This sadly doesn't change that. Definitely has to do with the production, but the vocalist doesn't help either. Sorry Scheumke! 2.8
The Vampire's Spell: Like everything except the hardcore vox. Again! Haha, me and vocals. Riffs and drums and bass are cool though! Nicely choppy! And the production doesn't suck either, so those are a lot of bonus points. 3.6
Guilt: This also has that incredibly hollow drum sound, especially in the toms (? I think), the rest is cool! The vocals are nicely dreamy and gazy guitars are nice and the rest is nice and nice and yeah 3.4
Into The Woods: Ooooh yeah the trees are very nice. Love them. I think the rest is going to be a repeat of what I already said many times this month, about vocals etc. But this is nice actually. Really like it that they don't want to do more than a nicely melancholy rock song. Good! 3.5 |
Divaman
07.27.20 | Triana - Piano opening, slightly discordant. Slow, emotional vocals. Tasteful guitar solo near the end. 3.2 |
Minushuman24
07.27.20 | 11. Call I Follow - LEM - Well, a concept album about witch folklore is always cool, but I can't say this exactly moved me at all. Just kinda plodding. The climax is everything I like in black metal though, very cathartic. I could have done without the wanky solo though. 2.7
12. Don't Call Me Wagga Wagga Wagga - Greg Champion - Oh, uh, huh. I wasn't really expecting this from you Sam, uh. 2.3
13. Messenger - Potatohead People - This is chill, it is cool. yeah. 3.4
14. Don't You - Black Sun Empire - God damn this is going at a breakneck pace. Yeah and it is not letting up. 3.2
16. 23 - Blonde Redhead - this is beautiful 3.7
17. Vagabond - DiMaggio - I can't get behind this guy's flow. Still probably one of the better things out of Bemidji
18. Sutterville - Giant Squid - pleasant, a little plain 3.0
19. Set the Ray to Jerry - Smashing Pumpkins - smashing pumpkins is good 3.6
20. Zombie - Not Exactly Heroes - holy fuck that intro was way too long. How is this punk rock but at the same time makes me feel like I should have a gun rack in my truck... Guess that's Wisconsin for ya. Sorry my dude, I can't get behind this punk-hiphop-country thing. 1.7

07.27.20 | Tu Frialdad: Dramatic! Loved this. It could have played in a Spanish restaurant that looks a little dodgy but serves the best food. You know the type of restaurant I mean. The real ones. They're the best. This was good! 3.8
The Garden: Yeah this is alright! It's nicely restrained. I loved the production actually, your brother's friend did a lovely job. I can hear the Ninja Tune-ness too from this. 3.6
Norf Norf: Never actually checked this guy's music out. Didn't hate this! It's bare-bones, very slick obviously, don't really know what to think, these kind of lyrics make me uncomfortable (in a not-suitable-for-background-listening way), and they're very prominent here. 3.5
Broken Glass: One of my fave albums from one of my fave bands ever. A 5.0, duh. The Gathering just know how to tick all the boxes for me, plus all of this nostalgia oh my. And Anneke. And the production. And the guitar playing. I will never not gush about this. You win July Metalrain.
Where The Streets Have No Name: Yeah ok a blast from the past, a great build up, certainly always gets me hyped. 4.2
BONUS Sweet: Love their sense of theatre, they sound like they wouldn't be misplaced on the Killing Eve soundtrack if that makes sense. This was very cool, will check the album, glad the bonus-entry was allowed! 4.0 |

07.28.20 | Jono McCleery - acoustic guitar, a little discordant. Mid-tempo. Vocalist sounds like Sting in his lower range. I'll go with a 3.3. |

07.28.20 | The Vampire's Spell - Is this actually budgiecore? Well they don't give any fucks, which is good. But they're also pretty bad and that's not good. Nice little intermezzo there. 2.3/5

07.29.20 | Vince Staples - Oh crap, here we go again. There's not even a lot of background music on this one. It's mostly hand claps, with a little bit of - I don't know? Synth imitating a didgerado? Or an air raid siren? Anyway, this one is somehow vaguely less in your face than the Cool Nutz track. 1.5 |
dedex
07.30.20 | 30. Broken Glass - ok I should def jam The Gathering at some point, this is super good. 3.9 |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.30.20 | all of the following come from me in a bleached out and slightly fatigued state maybe, so pinch your salt:
17. Vagabond - ily bloodshy (i think) but this felt like being stuck in a washing machine of Big Vibes (small vibes) with a shit lavalamp and no accelerator forever also why do we need a definition of vagabond lol, i know that one + it isn't very interesting or edgy! 2.5
18. Sutterville - enjoyed this and had no performance gripes, but something tells me I'll have zero memory of ever having heard it tomorrow. doesn't really go anywhere, but i can imagine a universe in which this is a really good segue track on a decent album ok 3.5/5
19. Set the Ray to Jerry - did not know Tonight Tonight was about Chicago, i thought it was about it was about the timelessness of cornball tumbleweed bumfluff. this is better, anyway. corgan is a trashheap but soft, gazey pumpkins have a higher hit ratio than pretty much anything else they do regularly (or otherwise). would be in the mid 3s, but -0.8 for the vocals because 8 is the smallest cube number that isn't 1 and this band is for megasquares 2.7/5
20. The History Of Sheboygan Punk Rock - this punk song certainly sounds like a punk sonoh fuck nevermind 20. Zombie - this punk song also sounds like a punk song but i liked the last one more before i skipped it. i cannot think of things to say about this. it's not bad maybe. it kinda drags. more tempo fewer seconds ig? 2.6/5
21. Let Me Know You're Mine - oh yay, a big dumb blues rock song - this hits the spot. love swanky overdone blues vibes more than i should tbh. i guess this is a nice comfort jam, but it ain't exactly reinventing the wheel 3.3/5
22. Portland Life - fuck portland 1/5
"actually johnny's dog is cool"

07.30.20 | The Gathering - Throbbing electronic sound. Slow female vocals. The sound is OK, but the song is kind of boring. 2.5 |

Also, am i hosting next month still, I got ideas |
Minushuman24
07.30.20 | Just a general question about hosting this. How does the spreadsheet work? How would you have to edit it? I wanna host at some point cause I have ideas and I this monthly thread has helped with my social anxiety on this site buuuuut I suck with spreadsheets,.... which makes little sense considering I'm majoring in engineering. |

07.30.20 | "Don't You"
Dancy breakbeat so far, okay. This would probably be fun at a club, but at home it's kinda just boring and repeatitive. Some music really needs to be played in the right place, but I'll be generous for that reason with my score and imagine myself at a club with this playing.
3/5
"Positively 4th Street"
His voice isn't too annoying in this song, but it's also not standing out much. The organ is pleasant though.
3/5
"23"
Very airy and light, especially when compared with the stuff I already know from Misery Is a Butterfly. I kinda don't love this direction, it's less unique and less engaging, but it's still pleasant.
3.3/5 |
ArsMoriendi
07.30.20 | "Vagabond"
I like the mixing on this, it's weirdy muffled, but in a way that works. Wait, that rapping is gross. Classical strings and bongos? Uh, good change up. Is this one song, this sounds like a new song? I still don't care for his vocals at all. This is disorganized and bland at the same time. Rare, but bad combo.
1.9/5
"Sutterville"
Chill jazz prog? So far, pretty okay. Feale vocals are nice, the male ones are not my thing. This song is honestly one of those "in one ear, out the other" deals.
2.5/5
"Set the Ray to Jerry"
Oh look it's the best Smashing Pumpkins b-side ever. Chamberlin's iconic drums and the bass guitar are so catchy and memorable. Corgan's vocals are as nasal as they usually and that's totally fine, I like how unique his voice is. The guitar just floats around, but that's fine because it's not the focus of the song and i adds atmosphere. It's so mellow, yet intense and loving. This is like the deffinition of a song to cuddle to. Why was this a Mellon Collie outtake? it's better than most of the songs on Mellon Collie. Hell, it's top 10 Pumpkins, fuck it. I goddamn love this song, always did.
5/5 |
Minushuman24
07.30.20 | 21. Let Me Know You're Mine - Who Killed Bruce Lee - yeah I can hear the Arctic Monkeys worship in this for sure. This certainly isn't bad, it meanders quite a bit, but I feel they're going for that lazy, sleezey, rock vibe. 3.3
22. Portland Life - Cool Nutz - Oh I was expecting the joke song to not be 5 minutes. okay. You know what, this is not bad. It's definitely way too thin sounding for hip-hop, but I don't mind this at all. 2.9
23. Messengers - Textures - I was expecting mediocre metalcore, but I got prog rock which is probably worse. I really don't like his vocals at all. His screams are solid, but the lyrics are kinda bad. 2
24. The vampire's Spell - Crime Desire - Simple, hard, distinct production, great vocals. This is good, I am gonna save this song. 3.6
25. Guilt - Ringo Deathstarr - This is great, which isn't very surprising to me. 3.6 |
Minushuman24
07.30.20 | 26. Into the Woods - Son of Prey - kinda proggy vocals, with some slow paced alternative rock. Not really my scene. 2.9
27. Tu Frialdad - Triana - This is a very lovely sounding song, I dig it. 3.4
28. Garden - Jono - McCleery - 3.3
29. Norf Norf - Vince Staples - Vince has a talent of riding the fine line between good and annoying. I think this song strays more towards the annoying side sadly, but definitely not a bad song. 3
30. Broke Glass - The Gathering - I think I've only heard songs from this band as recommended by MetalRain, and I've consistently really enjoyed them. Her voice is so lovely. 3.8
31. Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 - it's U2. 3
32. Sweet - Porridge Radio - 20 seconds in, I think this is my shit. This might be my favorite new song of the month. 4 |

07.30.20 | "Zombie"
Flipping through the channels. I like how 1 third of the song is stupid news about zombies. I also love how generic the vocals and music is. Sounds like edgy KISS stadium rock mixed with punk. This is quite awful.
1.5/5
"Let Me Know You're Mine"
Radio rock, but at least the bass is audible. The alien synthy shit in the background is a nice touch though, gives the song some life. Good enough to where it doesn't bother me at all.
3/5
"Portland Life"
Yup, this is 90s West Coast hip hop alright. Somehow I never imagined Portland as a rough city, so this is odd to hear. Something about the vocals are awkward and I can't quite place it.
2/5
"Messengers"
Gross whiny vocals, but with staticy electronic backups? Not very metal so far, so I'm surprised. Ah it's doing the prog metal thing, got it. Oh no, the screaming pickup ruined it, like it ruins more metal I begin to respect. :( Boring. Sounds ike Porcupie Tree with screaming, no thanks.
2.3/5 |
ArsMoriendi
07.31.20 | "The Vampire's Spell"
This guy is gonna hurt his throat with all of that weak squealing. Damn, I know i hate a lot of screaming, but it usually doesn't give me a headache. This is giving me a headache. Music is average as hell too. I almost wanna turn this off, these are some of the worst vocals I've heard in a long time. +0.5 for the instrumentation not being headhache inducing, but damn those vocals, fuck.
1.5/5
"Guilt"
Glitzy shoegaze. This song is like if you put glitter on a purple pastel cupcake with a vanilla base. Like this: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/2d/28/3e/2d283ef222f18c3bf0860852db8ea47d.jpg Pretty, but probably tastes gross. These guys like My Bloody Valentine a little too much for my liking.
2.5/5
"Into the Woods"
Very serious piano. Sounds like post grunge or something. It's a fairly bland radio rock type song.
2.5/5
"Tu Frialdad"
Pretty guitar and vocals so far. This is chill, not complaints. Not exactly memorable, but still nice.
3.2/5
"The Garden"
Catchy guitar and average vocals, okay. It kinda gives me Radiohead vibes, but in a good way. I like this actually, maybe not a lot, but I could see myself revisiting this potentially.
3.7/5
"Norf Norf"
This is chill background music I guess. There's trap snares, but they're used to sparringly that it doesn't ruin the song, hmmm. Plus there's other, better percussion in there too. Pretty catchy too. His voice is a little annoying though.
2.9/5 |
ArsMoriendi
07.31.20 | "Broken Glass"
Lovely souful voice so far. This is pretty much standard trip hop so far, mixed with alternative rock. This was cool.
3.5/5
"Where the Streets Have No Name"
Oh look it's Coldplay before Coldplay was a thing. Bullshit "inspiring" music. This is so empty sounding music and it's from the 80s so that wasn't even a trend yet. Great, U2 were ahead of the curve of a garbage production trend that'd get big 2 decades later. I saw a documentary trend where The Edge said he can play half as many notes and make it sound like twice as many on his guitar if he hits a peddle. This was in the same documentary where Jack White and Jimmy Page showed how they actually played the fucking guitar. I remember watching it with my friend who plays the guitar and he couldn't stop laughing because he realized he was probably better than The Edge at playing. The Edge is a legit hack, U2's music is milquetoast bullshit, and Bono is a douche. One of the worst bands of the 80s.
2/5
"Sweet"
Quiet vocals followed by loud guitar, that's pretty attention grabbing. LGBT themed? Classic noisy alt rock techniques that work.
3.6/5 |

07.31.20 | 22. Portland Life: Exactly as bad as I would expect Portland rap to be. I do like the little synth flourish during the chorus but everything else about this is pretty terrible - 2/5
23. Messengers: Clean vocals in the quiet sections are awful. Bass tone is nice when you can actually hear it. Heavier sections aren't completely terrible. - 2.5/5
24. The Vampire's Spell: Bewilderingly terrible production, the drums in particular sound unfathomably shitty. Boring cookie-cutter hardcore. - 2/5
25. Guilt: This is really good for shoegaze which is a shit genre generally. - 3.5/5
26. Into The Woods: Soft cock alt rock garbage. Utterly irredeemable, mind-numbing, weepy, kindergarten level shit. - 1/5
27. Tu Frialdad: This is pretty cool its like Spanish Floyd with hints of reggae influence. A lot going on here. - 3.5/5

Set the Ray to Jerry - did not know Tonight Tonight was about Chicago, i thought it was about it was about the timelessness of cornball tumbleweed bumfluff. this is better, anyway. corgan is a trashheap but soft, gazey pumpkins have a higher hit ratio than pretty much anything else they do regularly (or otherwise). would be in the mid 3s, but -0.8 for the vocals because 8 is the smallest cube number that isn't 1 and this band is for megasquares 2.7/5"
