04.30.18 | Okay, The Afghan Whigs- Faded
My favorite song from a newly discovered favorite band acts as a perfect closer to one of their masterpiece albums. The guitar riff that drowns you throughout the end of the song is some gut wrenching stuff. Sad cause they didn't play this at the show last night, but they were still incredible live.

04.30.18 | Kali Uchis- After the Storm (from Isolation)[soul/R&B]
Dream pop with wispy yet sugary sweet vocals, groovy bass and a smooth R&B feel. That's not to mention the balance brought to the song with Tyler's deep rap verse and Bootsy Collin's soulful contributions dispersed throughout the track.

Henry Cow - War [rock in opposition]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zzSeX88GIk
The transformation from being a jazz-learned rock band to now being a radical politically-driven collective was now complete with the merging of Henry Cow and their collaborators Slapp Happy. War, the opening song on 1975's In Praise of Learning, is a fine example of progressive music driven to its absolute limits in a song with a heavily leftist slant and bizarre vocals from Dagmar Krause of Slapp Happy. While a masterpiece in its own right, it stands beneath the shadow of the colossal work of genius that is Living in the Heart of the Beast. |

Soft Machine, Robert Wyatt, artists in the Canterbury scene (their earlier albums prior to the Slapp Happy merge were jazzier) and experimental classical stuff. To the best of my knowledge, they never acknowledged Zappa but did have an association with Beefheart (they toured with him in '73 iirc, which led them to improvise more). |
ArsMoriendi
05.06.18 | Canterbury scene wise:
I already love Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt
Flying Teapot by Gong is okay, but I wasn't so into it. |
Frippertronics
05.06.18 | With Gong, it's a bit difficult to pin down their sound since they changed quite a bit. I'd suggest their earlier stuff as well as You.
Since you like Rock Bottom, I highly suggest their first four Soft Machine records, which are the ones with Robert on drums/vox (except for Fourth, which by then, the band put a stop to including vocals, which was a cause for Robert leaving to form Matching Mole) |

much more "poppy" than anything I've heard from cap beef before. nice bit of classic rock this :)
Cuco - Lover Is A Day --> 2.9
some delicious synth organs and an appropriate lofi, verby production that fits the genre. a little to monotonous and repetitious songwriting though, the song could have been cut to roughly half it's running time because by then I felt I had already heard everything. nice sax solo at the end though. dec. |

05.07.18 | "Cow takes effort to get in to. Most of those were off one listen I'll bet"
We should not expect otherwise.
Also I'll admit that listening more than once to an average 10 minutes post-rock masturbation session is not going to happen. I might even stop halfway to avoid boredom/a messy climax.

War
Actually didn't find this particular song all that difficult. The more I simplified it the more I enjoyed it as a quirky offbeat track.
4.2
Lover Is A Day
Ugh ya I can definitely hear this coming off one of my friend's playlists. Ultimately the vocals feel somewhat overbearing and obnoxious and the atmosphere is not as absorbing as I would prefer. Disappointing track.
2.7
Muddy River of Loneliness
Didn't stick out a ton on first listen but was more revealing on further listens. Not my particular thing I don't think but I can appreciate it nonetheless.
3.4
For All I Care
I mean it's fairly neat but seems pretty insubstantial as well. Feels like an intro to a much better track.

This sounds like something my mom would like if you gave it more Christian lyrics. That fade out and outro also did nothing for the song.

"For All I Care"
This sounds like modern r&b mixed with demonic carnival music. Points for sounding original.

05.09.18 | Explosions in the Sky - “Let Me Back In”: I was never the biggest fan of Explosion in the Sky, but I liked this quite a bit. It's not too much more than competent post rock, but I really enjoy it for what it is.
3.8/5
New Average: 38/10 = 3.8 (10 folks)
Pulp - “Help the Aged”: Although the vocalist annoyed me at certain parts of the track, the piano and mellotron inclusions are very well done, and they add a satisfying kick here along with the extremely 90's production.
3.8/5
New Average: 34.8/10 = 3.48 (10 folks)
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - “Yellow Brick Road”: It just sounds like your run-of-the-mill 60's “quirk track”. There's still plenty of quality to it, but I feel like these guys should have way better stuff than this.
2.9/5
Skoopy48: 4.3
New Average: 31.6/9 = 3.51 (9 folks)
Henry Cow - “War”: Kinda like the last track but wo things are noticeably different here: 1. It's a 70's track, and 2. There's a defined jazz theme in the music, so the instrumentation is much more interesting when paired off with the vocals. The song is structured kinda poorly, though, and I wish the male/female vocal interplay lasted throughout the entire track instead of having it exclusively in the beginning.
3.3/5

05.10.18 | * Gang Gang Dance -- "Glass Jar" ~ [4.8] |
BlazinBlitzer
05.10.18 | Gang Gang Dance - “Glass Jar”: Oh dear... the truth is, I hated this at first. I had a contrarian mindset thinking, 'Well, it's everything I could've possibly ever wanted in a psychedelic track, but now that I've listened to it, I hate almost everything about it.' The production was too glossy, the song took an unwarranted and messy direction at halftime, and, worst of all, it was just all too much even for an eleven-and-a-half minute song. However, I heard glimpses of second layers and then I was like, “screw it, let's spin it a couple more times.” Now I realize that it actually is everything I want in a psychedelic track and it's absolutely amazing. The consistency of the pacing and atmosphere here with the conflicting halves is remarkable and it's fascinating to see how subtle transitions can be so vital to a track's quality. The only criticism that still stands is the second half's direction but even then there are many enjoyable aspects from it. This is an album I may be getting into... actually, change “may” to “will”.

05.12.18 | Giles Corey - "Buried Above Ground": It needs better vocal mixing and the ambient first half is slightly awkward, but it does many things very well. Instrumental variety is totally spot on and each instrument used is given a clear, well-defined tone.
3.8/5
Daniel Meade & the Flying Mules - "Let Me Off at the Bottom": Charming and great, but the last five seconds or so felt like they ran out of CD space, so they quickcut that piano passage. Strange, but not uncommon in old-timey songs, and it's a running cliche in those type of songs that I always find too be more awkward than useful.

05.18.18 | Midnight Choir - Muddy River of Loneliness (3.0)
Heartfelt song about a break-up of sorts that has a nice mid-tempo swing to it. a little bit too long for what is happening musically and lyrically imo, but generally a decent song.
Ssaliva - For All I Care (2.1)
Not enough movement for me when it comes to electronic wonkiness. not really a fan of the synths being used and what sounds like vocal manipulations. there are some quite cool compression/glitch effects being used, but overall the song falls pretty flat.
Gang Gang Dance - Glass Jar (4.2)
very intricate track with some wild instrumentation without ever going overboard. the song really dives into a nice groove once the drums and vocals kick in. very ethereal feel to the song and will probably have to check the album entirely based on this. top stuff! |

ArsMoriendi
05.23.18 | "Pelham"
Total background music, but pleasant enough.
3.3/5 |
bgillesp
05.24.18 | pelham- 3.0, short and interesting, but didn't progress, sounded like it needed more |
neekafat
05.24.18 | Well if Papi keeps doing this, people are gonna forget it was ever my baby... :( |
bgillesp
05.24.18 | Ars is up next. You gonna rate today's song Neek? |
neekafat
05.24.18 | Pelham: 3.9
Yeah this is pretty fuckin snappy alright |
neekafat
05.24.18 | I guess the reason why is that once I fall behind I feel like I can't just rate the day's song and feel like I have to start all the way at the bottom even though I really don't have the time which pushes it all back even further :c |
BlazinBlitzer
05.24.18 | Don Covay - “I Was Checking Out (She Was Checking In)”: A neat, passionate soul ballad with an interesting instrumental composition. I’ll take it!
3.8/5
Glen Hansard - “Way Back in the Way Back When”: There were some parts of this that were kinda annoying but it was an overall solid track with good ideas.
3.5/5
Elsiane - “Mend (To Fix, To Repair)”: “These vocals will make you hate this track.” Well there ya go. +.5 for honesty.
3.0/5 |
LeftyMcRighty
05.24.18 | Grails - "Pelham" Not bad. Good transitional piece for a mix. 3.7
Elsiane - "Mend (To Fix, To Repair)" I wanted to like this one more. I enjoyed the Portishead vibe but her voice is not my favorite. 3.3 |
bgillesp
05.24.18 | I have this album 5d. The vocals really grow on you after the weirdness wears off. She's really very talented |
anat
05.24.18 | pelham - 3 - sounds like a nice intro to an album but is just sort of there when standing alone
mend - 3.9 - i was so ready to turn this off straight away but i like plenty of stuff with eccentric vocals and you gotta admit they've got this enchanting quality, even if it does sound like the elephant man |
bgillesp
05.24.18 | Yesssss |
ArsMoriendi
05.25.18 | "Mend (To Fix, To Repair)"
Why do these vocals make me think of Jessie from toy story? State of confusEEOH you made an illusEEOH. Somehow this is pretty great though.
4.3/5 |
LeftyMcRighty
05.25.18 | Baths - "No Eyes" 3.4 |
LeftyMcRighty
05.25.18 | bgillesp - I gave it it another listen and edited my score. :) |
bgillesp
05.25.18 | Lefty, I saw a guy wearing an Elsiane shirt at the Whigs show and talked to him and he was so shocked I knew who they were. I understand it's not for everyone though. |
BlazinBlitzer
05.25.18 | Baths - “No Eyes”: It’s well performed and written compositionally but the lyrics are awful.
3.3/5 |
bgillesp
05.25.18 | [2] but I couldn't tell what they were saying half the time and lyrics aren't very important to me, so 3.6/5 |
BlazinBlitzer
05.25.18 | I had to look up the lyrics. I agree with the music>lyrics mentality 90% of the time, so that’s why this one’s above a 3 for me. Plus it sounds really nice for what it’s worth. |

05.25.18 | no eyes - 3.7 |

05.27.18 | 26- I really liked this. 4.2

05.27.18 | 27- ew, gross, make it stop, please, no, no more, don't please, noooo
My reaction to this song is the same as many young girls' reactions/interactions with R. Kelly. 1.3 |

Drifter
05.27.18 | Nice |
ArsMoriendi
05.27.18 | "Fragment Two"
This is mumbly as hell and lacks personality despite good production, no thanks lol. I might've given this a pass if it were more lo-fi.
2.9/5
"Sex Me"
Part 1 is pretty much generic 90s soul. Especially when compared to someone better like D'Angelo. Part 2 was a little better and more varied, but barely.
2.3/5 |
Drifter
05.27.18 | This reception is amazing |
Aberf
05.27.18 | Maybe try to stop recommending R. Kelly? Just stop it. Terrible music, terrible person, terrible recommendation. |
ArsMoriendi
05.27.18 | Recommend like D'Angelo, Lauren Hill, or Erykah Badu if you wanna do 90s soul, they're good |
Egarran
05.27.18 | Way Back in the Way Back When: I'm not drunk enough for this. 2.8
Pelham: I don't know what's going on, but I like it. Bonus merit for song length 👍 4
Hybrid: Yeah good but damn, turn down those drums. 3.5
No Eyes: Didn't really go anywhere, although it sounded like it did halfway through. 2.9
Fragment Two: Interesting, never heard any post-stadium-punk before. Nice. 3.4
Sex Me: Drifter, you monster. I can't do it ): 1.5 |
ArsMoriendi
05.28.18 | "The Wild Hunt"
If I was more into folk, I bet I'd love this song. This is super well made and I like it for a one time listen.
3.6/5 |

05.28.18 | Wild Hunt- 4.9, album is a near 5 for me, took a while to grow though. |
BlazinBlitzer
05.28.18 | These New Puritans - "Fragment Two": A highly, highly ambitious track that has loads of intriguing ideas. It needed to be longer/have a better song structure to make all those ideas flow a bit smoother, though.
3.8/5
R. Kelly - "Sex Me": Yeah, no thanks. I don't need R. Kelly telling me that I have to listen to his remix for 11+ minutes. It's not even in 69 tempo, like, c'mon dude.
1.4/5
The Tallest Man on Earth - "The Wild Hunt": I mean, it's the track that fronts Sputnik's most acclaimed album of 2010, what do you expect?
4.3/5
Also, thanks Egarran for the Pelham comment! You should most definitely listen to that whole album if you're interested :) |
Egarran
05.29.18 | On another forum, one of my mortal enemies was a Grails fan, so pride dictated I didn't listen to them.
But he's dead now, so I guess it's ok. |
LeftyMcRighty
05.29.18 | These New Puritans - "Fragment Two" 4
R. Kelly - "Sex Me" - Everything that's bad about R&B music. .8
The Tallest Man on Earth - "The Wild Hunt" - I should like this one more as I like a lot of Folk/Americana/Singer-Songwriter stuff but I wish someone else sang his songs. His voice hurts my ears a little. 3.7
Dan Deacon - "When I Was Done Dying" - Makes my ears feel better. 4.3 |
bgillesp
05.29.18 | Add my 4.0 for Covay pls (: |
BlazinBlitzer
05.29.18 | @Eg Well that sucks. I know he was your “enemy” and what not, but my respect goes out to him.
Anyways, the rest of Grails discography isn’t all that essential. If you only listen to Burning Off Impurities, you have a pretty good idea of what the rest of their catalogue is like. Chalice Hymnal went a completely different direction from the rest of their material, though, and all the better for it, especially with the shorter song lengths and broader influences. |
Egarran
05.29.18 | We had a thread dedicated to him where we could post hipster music.
But thanks, will check out. |

05.29.18 | "When I Was Done Dying"
This is decent, but it isn't grabbing me.

05.29.18 | It's ok Neek, you're still far away from an atrocity called "Drifter", a guy who isn't even participating, but still insisting, until this very day, to put R. Kelly as his recommendation. |
Papa Universe
05.29.18 | That is why I keep pushing him till the very end of the month, sort of delaying the catastrophe. |
BlazinBlitzer
05.29.18 | See Ars, Aberf gets it. If you’re gonna hate on The Garden’s All Nighters, at least give it a higher score than R. Kelly. That’s all I’m asking for at this point :P |

05.30.18 | Sorry Blazin, I fucking hate metalcore. It seems like what makes metalcore good is what makes me hate it. |
Aberf
05.30.18 | Also Ars, since you're doing the next month, can we just ban R. Kelly from the list?
Or just ban Drifter lmao. |
BlazinBlitzer
05.30.18 | It's all good, I totally get it. That song is definitely not for everyone, and neither is metalcore in general. |
Egarran
05.30.18 | The Wild Hunt: I'm glad yall like this, so I don't have to. Getting unpleasant Dylan vibes. 2.5
When I Was Done Dying: Woah. Thanks for showing me this trippy work of art. Do shrooms, kids. 4.5
Human: Lovely. Reminded me of early Mew. 4
Stalker: Link didn't work, but the full album is there. I appreciate what're they're trying to do. 3.2

05.30.18 | Dan Deacon - "When I Was Done Dying": Ahh, this is quite nice... AltErnAteVocAlmEloDynOtfOunD.exe
3.5/5
DIIV - "Human": Ahh, this is quite nice, but the composition feels pretty standard and safe for a shoegaze track. It's mixed and produced much better than a lot of other shoegaze outlets, though, so it doesn't dock it that much.
3.8/5 |
bgillesp
05.30.18 | Wiwdd- 4.2
