Ranked: 1989 in Death Metal
I was wanting to do one more run through of the Top Ten before posting this, but also I kinda want to just publish it now. Gonna be about 61 albums in total. Amongst the previous three lists I've already accumulated 233 releases between them, and we haven't even hit 1990 yet. For this list I heard 77 different releases. |
1 | | Obituary Slowly We Rot
The album I would most define as classic against the others on this list. |
2 | | Morbid Angel Altars of Madness |
3 | | Carcass The Peel Sessions |
4 | | Napalm Death Mentally Murdered
Wat. |
5 | | Carcass Symphonies of Sickness |
6 | | Pestilence Consuming Impulse |
7 | | Autopsy Severed Survival
I'll admit I had this lower, but won't admit the initial placing. |
8 | | Immolation Immolation (2)
Originally I was going to have this at 7 and Autopsy lower, but it is only 3 songs and I didn't want to snuff Severed Survival like that.

9 | | Mortem (NOR) Slow Death
once Mutilated Corpse fully kicks in, you're guaranteed to go "Woah".

10 | | Xysma Swarming of the Maggots
What the actual fuck? Balls out heavy as all hell bass heavy powergrind, with a stupid low low-end that could put you on your knees. Violent, grimey, squealy, and dirty, with precision. Feels like you just took a mud bath. Pulverizing is the descript here. Apparently they seemed to have abandoned this pummelling sound for a smorgasbord of other ingredients by the time of their debut but I have not heard that yet.

11 | | Atheist Piece of Time |
12 | | Bolt Thrower Realm of Chaos |
13 | | Invocator Alterations
A little under three minutes on "Occurence Concealed" and it's like dyuude, the ultimate breakdown in tempo that has been mirrored by metal ever since, because it's amazing. |
14 | | Nihilist Only Shreds Remain |
15 | | Morgoth Resurrection Absurd |
16 | | Carnage Infestation of Evil |
17 | | Carnage The Day Man Lost |
18 | | Carbonized Au-To-Dafe
one of my favorite Death metal band names and I'm finding that this is extremely overlooked. It's slightly muddy but nowhere near unlistenable. Songs have structure that naturally flow into a groove. Easy 4. Let's gooo.

19 | | Funebre Cranial Torment
Slaps |
20 | | MX Mental Slavery
Should I include these next two? |
21 | | Kreator Extreme Aggression
Should I include these next two? [2] |
22 | | Terrorizer World Downfall |
23 | | Nihilist Drowned |
24 | | Sepultura Beneath the Remains |
25 | | Epidemic (Metal) The Truth of What Will Be |
26 | | Grave Sexual Mutilation
This band's demos go hard. They're all top. |
27 | | Protector Urm the Mad
Much better than Golem, but their '86 demo is my favorite up to this point. Followed by Misanthropy. |
28 | | Dismember Last Blasphemies |
29 | | Exmortis Immortality's End |
30 | | Energetic Krusher Path to Oblivion
On the thrashier side of things. |
31 | | Entombed But Life Goes On |
32 | | Tormentor Anno Domini
Yeah it's a little more black metally |
33 | | Merciless Realm of the Dark |
34 | | Carnage (USA-IL) Killing Spree |
35 | | Blasphemy Blood Upon the Altar |
36 | | Sempiternal Deathreign The Spooky Gloom |
37 | | Defecation Purity Dilution
I got a rant about this one and metal-archives lol.
But in short, this is good and definitely should exist lol. Whether it has members of Napalm Death or not. |
38 | | Grave Anatomia Corporis Humani |
39 | | Sarcofago Rotting |
40 | | Vader Necrolust |
41 | | Blood Impulse to Destroy |
42 | | Repulsion Horrified |
43 | | Sadus The Wake Of Severity |
44 | | Asphyx Crush The Cenotaph (demo) |
45 | | Demolition Hammer Necrology (Demo) |
46 | | Necrodeath Fragments of Insanity |
47 | | Treblinka The Sign of the Pentagram |
48 | | Loudblast Sensorial Treatment |
49 | | Thormenthor Self Immolation |
50 | | Treblinka Severe Abominations |
51 | | Sadistic Intent Conflict Within
Pretty thrash-tastic but it didn't really hook me you know? It does go hard, but not in my kinda way.
3.5 |
52 | | Dark Tranquillity Enfeebled Earth

And there's another band called Mid-Evil that I can't find here or on YouTube. The one from CAN. |

66 | | Mid-Evil Underground
I'm def going to be exploring this band's short discography of EP's I added here. Unconscious Predator piqued my intrigue into what else they have left.
Added to site after. |
67 | | Dr. Shrinker Wedding the Grotesque |
68 | | Accidental Suicide Sadistic Intentions
Had this on my 1990 list because that's what it says on the cover, but metal-archives has it in '89 and I'm all out of room on my 1990 list anyway. Artwork is cool even though it's simple but I'm a sucker for red, so it's too bad it's messed here.
3.5 |
69 | | Baphomet (NY) Morbid Realities
Metal-archives says '89. I think this is a 3. |
70 | | Expulsion (SWE) Cerebral Cessation |
