There certainly is no christian god, or jewish god, or muslim god or any specific, personalized god, but how do we know that god didn't create the universe and then went away? well, we don't, it's only very unlikely, but not definitely untrue.

Gods are ways of giving people that sense of undeniable and concrete comfort, and I suppose there's nothing wrong with that so long as it's not used as a tool for violence, subjugation, and as a means of keeping people from getting a science-based education.

For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I heard that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn't work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there's no guilt in baseball, and it's never boring... which makes it like sex. There's never been a ballplayer slept with me who didn't have the best year of his career. Making love is like hitting a baseball: you just gotta relax and concentrate. Besides, I'd never sleep with a player hitting under .250... not unless he had a lot of RBIs and was a great glove man up the middle. You see, there's a certain amount of life wisdom I give these boys. I can expand their minds. Sometimes when I've got a ballplayer alone, I'll just read Emily Dickinson or Walt Whitman to him, and the guys are so sweet, they always stay and listen. 'Course, a guy'll listen to anything if he thinks it's foreplay. I make them feel confident, and they make me feel safe, and pretty. 'Course, what I give them lasts a lifetime; what they give me lasts 142 games. Sometimes it seems like a bad trade. But bad trades are part of baseball - now who can forget Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas, for God's sake? It's a long season and you gotta trust it. That's true to some point, but I guess not in the way you meant it. In fact there's no proof of anything except your very own existance. Everything and really everything else can not be definitively proven. But that is the strict version that harkens back to "I think, therefore I am" in some way. While that is true, to be able to live our life we need to rely on knowledge that might not be proven to 100% by that definition, but that is based on evidence and therefore has a likelihood to be reality of figuratively speaking 99%. Now religion is the reliance on hope above everything. It completely neglects the idea of empirism and dismisses observation and reason. And therefore I really can't agree with "Gods are ways of giving people that sense of undeniable and concrete comfort, and I suppose there's nothing wrong with that" The thing is, I'd say we as humans are to a certain extent defined by our ability to think in quite complex patterns and to process what we experience and witness in a way that actually gives us the chance to explain and describe that properly. The nature of religious belief contradicts that in a way, that just appear to be quite...dumb to me (sorry for that expression, but I really can't phrase it differently).

Religion gives you certain "guidelines" to live life in a proper way, so... But we all do that actually. The big difference is that religious people follow some external rules (probably not only those), while other people draw their lines and define their own actions themselves. And even that isn't really true, unless you're a die-hard humanist. Because the way people judge certain behaviour and of course also their own stems mostly from their upbringing, social acceptance or laws. At least that's how I'd look at it. The "source" of those guidelines that define good and bad might differ and one might be more questionable than the other, but the process is quite similar.

I started to question God as an omnipresent, interventionist being when I was about 9 and started to realise it was bollocks but there was still an overriding sense of 'something' untill I was in me early 20s when I thought realistically if there was a god he's long since kicked the bucket. Leading on to where I find my self now thinking there never has been a God. However that initial upbringing of being told God was real, good and evil, an afterlife and so on planted something in me. I wonder if I'd act differently if straight off the bat I'd unquestionably never believed. I probably would have in all honesty.

For instance I woulnd't have the chuzpe to call myself a humanist, if there wouldn't be the concept of god (it doesn't get more arrogant on that matter, really). No matter, if one still believes or when he started to be critical about the whole stuff, the very existance of the idea of an almighty power has an impact. Simply cause one has to choose a way to react to it, deal with it and live with it. There are definitely questions in my life I would have never asked myself, if there wouldn't be the idea of god everywhere. Even if my family wasn't all that religious, it's still something that comes up sooner or later. Not to mention that ones parents being religious can have quite an effect on their way to raise their children too.

All it means when you say you're agnostic is that you don't know if there's a higher power or not. Every single person on the planet is agnostic. If you say you're gnostic, you're a psycho. No exceptions. Everyone is either an agnostic atheist or an agnostic theist. Either you believe in something or you don't. You can't really "kinda" believe in something. But either way, there is pretty much no evidence whatsoever for a higher power which is why I am an atheist. There's no real need to specify the "agnostic" part of that because it kind of goes without saying that nobody would be stupid enough to be gnostic and say "I know this for a fact without having seen all the evidence". And that goes for both sides of the argument.
