Top 10 Albums of 2016

I know it seems like I'm late with this list, but for me, I'm about a month early -- I usually don't finish my "Best Of" lists until mid-March or so. Amazingly, although I had another dozen albums or more to check, this is the same list I gave in in January for the Sputnik Users Best Of vote.
10Phantogram
Three

These guys just missed making my 2014 list for their "Voices" album. My favorite song here is "Run Run Blood".
9The Jezabels
Synthia

This is a band and an album I actually learned about on this site. The album mixes it up pretty well in terms of the styles and speed of the songs, making it a satisfying listen. Best song: "My Love Is My Disease".
8The Mowgli's
Where'd Your Weekend Go?

This band gets no love at all on this site, which is unfortunate. I like their whole hippy drive -- even though they're from Los Angeles, they sound like a throwback San Francisco band. This is the second year in a row these guys made my Top 10 Albums list.
7Night Riots
Love Gloom

This band made my Top 20 Songs list last year with their song "Break" from their "Howl" EP. They're an alt rock band from the Central Coast of California who seem to have been heavily influenced by The Killers.
6Radiohead
A Moon Shaped Pool

I have to admit, I've never been a big fan of this band in the past. But this album had such a good word of mouth that I had to check it out. Now I'm going to have to have to go back to their catalog and listen to more of their other stuff. I'm kind of on the borderline re/how I feel about Thom Yorke's voice, (which might be what put me off of them for so long), but the music here is complex and beautiful.
5Garbage
Strange Little Birds

At first, this album left me a little flat, but it grew on me. I don't like it quite as much as 2012's "Not Your Kind of People", but it's still a pretty damn good album. And for anyone who ever watched the old TV show, Shirley Manson was a great Terminator.
4Tegan and Sara
Love You to Death

This album has been criticized as sounding very like their last album, 2013's "Heartthrob". But that album made my Top 10 list, and this one does too. What can I say, they know how to write catchy alternative pop songs. "Boyfriend" was the first single from this album, and it's also their strongest track.
3Against The Current
In Our Bones

I thought their "Gravity" EP from last year showed promise, but they really stepped it up a notch for this one. Chrissy Costanza is a tiny little girl with a big voice. The album is full of manic 20-something energy, driven in particular by a pair of youth anthems, "Young & Relentless" and "Running With the Wild Things". Alternative Press called it "pop rock perfection", and I'd have to agree.
2Andy Black
The Shadow Side

For most of the year, I thought this would be my #1 album, and that would have been fine. I've always liked Andy Biersack's vocals with Black Veil Brides, but this alt-pop solo project is more up my alley. Unfortunately, I think it's fallen through the cracks -- it's not heavy enough for many BVB fans, and very few alt rock fans have ever heard of it. It's a pity, because most of the album is really strong, especially "Stay Alive" (with Matt Skiba), "Ribcage", and the single, "We Don't Have to Dance".
1Bayside
Vacancy

Bayside is one of my favorite bands of the modern era, and they put out one of their best albums yet in "Vacancy". There are a lot of songs I like on here, but "Two Letters" and "Mary" really stand out. Pretty much every one of their albums has made my Top Ten list in their given years, and this is the second time they took my #1 slot (after doing it in 2008 with "Shudder").
