It's as easy as I don't really go out of my way to keep up with modern stuff, but next month I'm exclusively listening to 2010s albums, so maybe that'll change eventually.. a bit. |

04.02.19 | Alright Sputics, we have nearly filled up half the month, now the fun begins. Time to listen, discuss and rate each song. Starting with Ars's guideline bending classic by the Cocteau Twins.
Lazy calm, 4.1. Song starts off blissfully ambient with beautiful musical arrangements, that soothe our troubles away. Then the amazing vocals hit, no idea what the fuck she is saying, but I don't care, it adds to the etherealness of this song. This song could be released this year, if you hadn't told me i would not have guessed it was 33 years old.
So Ars, is this your favourite song by this band? And which album should i start at, I've never really listened to a full album.
Ars had set the bar high, can anyone else's recs beat it.
I feel like a fucking quizshow presenter. |
ArsMoriendi
04.02.19 | Nah, it's not my favorite, and it's from my least favorite album I've checked by them.
I recommend their album Treasure. Most would rec Heaven or Las Vegas though |

04.03.19 | Houseplants, Great rec Skoop.
There is so much going on with this song. The vocals at the start sound like the British rapper Scroobius Pip, but as the song progresses angst ridden fun takes over. Music sounds like a more upbeat modern version of 80s new wave with an awesome sax offender honing his skills. I feel like this, Papa's rec last month "Fontaines D.C". as well as last year's Parquet Courts album have a very similar vibe, which i quite enjoy.

04.03.19 | Broken Social Scene - 1972
Maybe it is the softer instrumentation or the vocals, can't quite tell, but I really could not get into this song. I've had my problems with Broken Social Scene, as I always thought of them as a band you need to listen to on a full-album scale, in order to appreciate the songs, and this track does not exactly disprove that. With that said, I did get used to it towards the end and it won me over a little, but nothing much to write home about for me, really.

V much agreed with this tbh, much as I love some of their individual tracks |
DungeonBoy
04.03.19 | Right on dude, it was more an emphasis on how much I enjoyed the previous track, not to actively bash today's track. Sorry if that wasn't clear, I'll try and work on that. I now see you that you rec'd today's track. Very cool my man! Gave it a few spins. Doesn't do a whole lot for me, but objectively it's very nice sounding and has a great mix. It reminds me of a girl I knew in college who was always very sad. Cheers! |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.19 | "1972"
I tried all of You Forgot It in People and only ended up loving "I'm Still Your Fag," so I'm skeptical about this one, but the bass is nice and the bird sounds give it a unique feeling. The vocals make me think of modern indie pop in the most boring radio friendly way. It's sort of engaging anyway, so I don't hate it though. +.1 for the strings at the end.

04.04.19 | Jamming 4, sounds like a TMP song with less dweedle deedle parts. Musically I feel like I've heard this song a thousand times. Lyrically, doesn't real hit as hard as I feel it's trying to. JohnnyoftheWell
04.04.19 | For the Sake of Brevity - never listened to Tiny Moving Parts before and this was pretty different to what I expected. Passionate, but it didn't hit me much personally and the musicianship was a little simplistic for a math rock staple band. 3.2/5 |
ArsMoriendi
04.04.19 | "For the sake of brevity"
Spacey guitar so far WAIT NOOOOO those vocals immediately murdered this song. Every song ever with this vocal style needs to fuck off. I don't usually downvote the Youtube video when I listen to these, but fuck these vocals sound like a pained 14-year-old who thinks his parents "just don't understand." And no, the pretty female backup vocals don't rescue it. Musically, it's boring, but not offensive. -1.7 for the worst vocals ever.

04.05.19 | 5 - "Black Pill Skyline"
Hey There Delilah. Song is good. Lot's going on in that mix, pretty sure it's all programmed/midi, but not really the point, since obviously the main focus is those vocals, which are kinda unique and I'd say makes for an interesting listen. Good rec, but maybe not for me. |

What's it like in New York city?
I'm a thousand miles away

04.05.19 | Black pill skyline 3.0
Don't you hate when you go to edit your post and you hit delete.
The song starts abruptly, like we are already halfway through the first verse, initially I'm not a fan of his vocals, but get used to them after a couple of listens. Some of the samples and effects don't quite fit, and you can hardly hear the bongos, which are overpowered by the repetitive loud electro percussion.
Listening to the album as a whole is a better experience. I find the album chill at times and blissful at others.

Papa Universe
04.07.19 | Default Genders - Black Pill Skyline: pretty sure that's Hey There Delilah, but with slightly more off-putting vocals and slightly nicer musical arrangement. 3
Copeland - As Above, So Below: doesn't really do it for me. it's more or less a standard dreamy pop tune and after multiple listens I am still struggling to remember what was in it. really tried, now really tired. 2.5 |
ArsMoriendi
04.07.19 | "As Above, So Alone"
Very poppy. Dream pop? I don't know, maybe it's just indie pop. Kinda bland even if the drums and piano had their moments.
3.3/5
"Movies"
Am I listening to Lana Del Rey? No seriously, this sounds a lot like her. Overly simplistic beat, strings backing her up, sad vocals that sound a little drunken and slow. Okay the vocalist has a different timbre, but that's like where the differences end.

Nice build, the film clip is shit so I'm just listening to it now. The album is great, spun it a few times already. I listened to this album a bit last year and there were some decent tracks on there. This one is strong but very generic, def pop punk with a midwest emo math rock thing happening. I find there is so much out there like this that they all kinda blend into one, it is hard to stand out.

'As Above So Below'
I like this band, and I like this album. I've only listened to it front to back, so I wasn't even really sure which track this was but yeah this one's a highlight with the more uptempo/vibrant drumming, cool piano, nice vocal melodies, and it really carries itself well throughout the entire track. Good stuff. Track is a solid 4.3 on an album that is a solid 4.
'Movies'
It's an interesting juxtaposition with that arpeggiated verse and slowly building but powerful vocals. Don't know anything about this project, but the song is great and very movi(e)ng. Oh and then it switches to violins and some percussion, unexpected! She's got some killer pipes. easy 4 out of 5 for personal enjoyment but those vocals are 5/5. Curious to hear what an entire album sounds like |

04.10.19 | "Agony"
Wow, that rapping seems out of tune with the beat. Is that the point? Polyrhythmic math trap? This is giving me a headache. Bad percussion, loads of autotune, decent beat I suppose. Man those bell sound effects are the only good decision here, I'll focus on them. Keeps me hanging on... ...this song, it's not fun to listen to, it doesn't vibe. 04.10.19 | Second rec time for those who have caught up on all the songs. Been some fucking decent songs so far boys, sorry been binge watching the new animated Trailer Park Boys.
So what other enthralling tracks have you discovered, so far this year, that you would like to share with the rest of us.
My second rec comes off the soon to be released new album by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard- Fishing For Fishies.
For when you or someone you know is feeling sad and down, play this tune, or share it with someone, and everyone will be instantly happier. |

Awful. -1/5
"Wind on the Storm"
cookie cutter NWOBHM worship. Basic drumming that sounds like EZDrummer. Generic verse riff and structure. Pretty killer guitar solo. The highlight is obviously the female vocals and her melodies which are pretty on point. I dig it. 3/5

1.5, this is horrible. Singing sux pausing for no reason, and there is no versatility. Musically it is OK, but drums are just repetitive, and the guitarist is just plodding along before pumping out a generic solo. |

04.11.19 | Captain's log, Day 11, "Summer".
Trifolium my man, this was uh, unexpected, from you. On one hand I can dig the way that funky bass makes my head bob, and the way those Seal-like vocals make me think of Batman Forever, and the sassy horns come in and make me feel like an esteemed gentlemen, but then there's this other hand where it completely misses any mark for any sort of emotional connection, where it sits nicely as something I'd appreciate in say.. an elevator, but the idea of actively choosing to listen to this would make me question my own sanity. 2/5 for me but 4/5 for style? Who knows. |
SlothcoreSam
04.11.19 | Summer, 2.8
A funky slow summer jam for a romantic encounter at the beach. Or background music at a cafe. The scratching is kinda ruining it a little, the sax offender emphasizes the cafe style. Vocals are smooth. Yeah this is definitively background music to me. |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.11.19 | Wes Dault Can’t Find The Madison Falcon - whut, this is a 2018 album :O Enjoyed this, had appropriate levels of energy and passion but it didn't leave a particularly deep impression. Would have been all over this a few years back 3.5/5

04.12.19 | "Summer"
Wow, the bass makes this total porno music. Those soulful vocals add to it. Yup, this is for fucking. It's not the most interesting song ever, but it works well as mood music, not sure why you guys all hate it lol. The record scratches are nice too as is the sax solo. Seriously, I'd fuck to this in s heartbeat. It's sexy, but not too distracting.

04.14.19 | Lazy Calm: Superb track. I've tried to get into Cocteau Twins a long time ago, failed to do so, and never bothered since. Might have to change that now! 4.0
Houseplants: Some serious LCD Soundsystem vibes here. Another nice track, dancable. Towards the end it gets a bit more serious as opposed to tongue in cheek, which slightly nocked it down for me. 3.4
1972: Nice, but the manipulated vox aren't my thing in this. Plus it's a little too long. 2.9
For The Sake Of Brevity: These vox are not for me either. Maybe when I was 16, but not now. 2.1
Black Pill Skyline: Again, what's with these boring vocals? Track is kind of ok, but these vocals are just annoying. 2.5
As Above, So Alone: The drum sound during the first minute is a little too close in sound to something like r&b for my liking. The rest of the track is better, but a little over-processed. It's one big sausage of sounds if that makes sense. If it doesn't, it still is true. And again with the vocal effects?! What's with 2019 and manipulated vox!? 2.8

Chasing the Sound: Not a fan of these vocals or tbh this kind of folk in general, but the instrumental section around 3 mins in is neat and really lifted my impression of the whole thing 3.3
Kasvetil Kutlama: Oh hai there Sisters of Mercy! I usually struggle to take this brand of post-punk seriously but this embraces the dry ice vibes and is pretty fun. Very fun even, definitely enjoying this. Pity that synth tone doesn't quite fit 3.7

Wes Dault Can't Find The Madison Falcon: Angsty, another should-have-heard-this-when-I-was-16 kind of track, and I doubt if it would even make an impact back then... 2.0
Agony: Yuck, I detest this kind of music. Vocals are horrid, beat is not my thing at all, eew. 1.5

Kasvetli Kutlama: Super Sisters Of Mercy, agreed. A 'kutlama' translates from Dutch to 'cunt llama' which is of course hilarious. 3.2
Antes De Ti: Weird, nice bass-work, a nice orchestral backdrop, some cool singing. James-bondian, but also childlike, or like you're in one of those Italian restaurants . 2.9
Fishing For Fishies: Nice! Drumming is delish, track is a lot of fun. Always when I hear KG&TLW I mean to look more into their discog. It never happens though... Maybe this time? 3.3

04.14.19 | "Kasvetli Kutlama"
Had to use an alternate link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy2x_kHCy4w) since the one on the list didn't work. So far this is very 80s sounding. I don't like all of this retro 80s worship. If you're gonna worship something pre-2000s, why not the 60s? This sounds like discount Bauhaus. Bela Lugosi isn't dead, he's a reanimated corpse.
2.4/5
"Antes de Ti"
Simple, pleasant, and poppy. I like the strings even though the melody isn't really too memorable. It's passionate though. The triangle and chimes or whatever are cute too.
3.6/5 |
SlothcoreSam
04.14.19 | Kasvetli Kutlama. 2.8.
80s goth-vocals synth-sounding boredom. Nothing is really happening yet, halfway through and I'm waiting for some screams or some heavily distorted real instruments to kick in, not more synthesizer. The song does get better as i get used to it, but it's not for me. And what's a "cunt llama?"
Antes de Ti,3.5 I'm liking her vocals straight up, def get a french latino fusion. Don't get any Asian influences though. It feels like this would fit a Tarantino film quite well, or have Wu Tang sample it and use the chorus.
Definitely a song for a soundtrack. |

'Kasvetli Kutlama'
hmm. what is this like gothic electronic post punk? Not my forte, but pretty cool song. Reminds me of dudes in high school wearing trenchcoats and goggles in the summer time. Surprisingly interesting throughout though, digging those synth melodies and super chorusy guitars. Instrumentally I dig it, the vocals are typical deep monotone spoken goth vox, which I feel very neutral about.
3.4
'Antes de Ti' - Listened to it 3 times trying to find the right words to describe my feelings. It has a very cinematic quality to it with those strings and horns, and the lyrics are in Japanese and the chorus is in Spanish (weird fusion there). It's a good song, it is interesting throughout, but as I struggled to find the right words our dear Sloth friend's comment "would fit a Tarantino film" just summed it up perfectly.
3.7
'Fishing for Fishies'
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is one of those band names that I've always seen and thought to myself, I'm not gonna "get" the music contained therein, and... yep my predictions were correct. The most interesting (distracting) aspect is those asynchronous hard panned drums. I feel totally out of my element rating something like this. So gonna throw it right down the middle with a solid

Race To The Bottom: Wow, beautifully produced! Reminds me of dEUS and Spinvis in a way. Some cool instrumentation too, in the deeper layers, like that sax or whatever it is between 4.00-5.00, makes it all really intricate. Nice one! I'll look into his discog for sure. 3.6

Race to the bottom, 4.1 musically it starts off like old school spaghetti westerns. Vocals are hauntingly poignant. Song fades off into the sunset, makes you want to be drinking mescal by the desert campfire. The album as a whole is fantastic.

Race To The Bottom: I expected to be slightly underwhelmed by this but damn this is mesmerising. Must give the album a check; my main complaint with this track is that it build much and ends up petering out, but I suspect this wouldn't be an issue in sequence 4.3
Pistol Whipped: Some interesting piano chords save this from being the straightforward cabaret-esque smoker I thought it might be. Sexy stuff, interesting that it unravels rather than builds. Wow, this intro is actually engaging off the back. The whisper singing is appealing too. I like the violin and acoustic guitar since they make me feel that there's this intense passion here. Nice sax too. A bit overlong, but still great.

"Pistol Whipped"
Damn, her voice is deep. Deeper side of contralto much? She reminds me of a deeper voiced Regina Spektor. This one is simple and sultry, but also kinda empty sounding. I wish there was more going on than just... wait a weird theatrical crash of sound hmmm oh it's gone. Too minimalist for me honestly.

04.21.19 | "Kanashii Hibi"
Well, this has A LOT of energy. Not sure I love the screaming, but the piano is neat and so is the distortion. That mellow percussion part is a nice contrast too -.7 for the ugly screaming. I would've loved this otherwise. :(
3.5/5
"VTr
What's with this group and post-punk? I bet Papa will give this a high score. The vocals are fine, the music is fine, everything here is safe and passable and sounds like it could've come out in 1987. Radio hit worthy if it was older bleh nostalgia from an era before I was born.
2.7/5 |

04.22.19 | VTr, 3.3. It's OK, but could never get into this band. To me, his vocals don't match the music, put a female vocalist on this track and it would be great. The music does build nicely on this though.
KITTY KITTY, 3.8. that was different, reminds me of The Presets, but with more instruments, less electronics. Musically it is also like early Battles. Gonna have to check out the rest of the album now. |

04.22.19 | Yessss Sam!!! De Staat is very cool, good choice. |
DungeonBoy
04.22.19 | 'Race To The Bottom' - Excellent instrumentals, vox kinda remind me of a more subdued Trophy Scars in a way. Digging this song, good rec. Curious to hear what the rest of the album sounds like. Easy 4/5
'Pistol Whip' - Not for me, but hope she's having fun doing what she's doing, 2.8/5 for my personal enjoyment, but like 4/5 for that voice and creative style.
'Kanashii Hibi' - NSFW album cover at work so gonna have to skip this one. ?/5
'VTr' - Heard of, but never listened to these guys. Sounds like what newer AFI is trying to sound like. Nice pop dark goth electronic post punk sound that's very accessible. It's catchy as heck, can't not dig it this morning. 4/5 gonna jam the rest, hopefully it's same quality but different enough to be interesting. EDIT: oh wow, well, didn't notice the Scottish accent till the 2nd listen as I was mostly just listening to the melodies, but yeah that catches my ear. |

A break up ballad by a prog metal band sounds like a recipe for disaster, but they make it work somehow. |

04.23.19 | "KITTY KITTY"
Tired bad sounding rap vocals? Meh. Simple catchy bass? Decent. Annoying hard sound? Ugh. This is decent somehow despite my complaints, the synths create an atmosphere that's pretty cool and the way it rocks out 3 mins in works too.
3.3/5
"Pistol Dave"
Soulful sooo far... wait it's a sample and this is hip hop. Ooh nice soulful vocals and violin. Goofy take on a song about a criminal? idk I only half paid attention to the lyrics.

04.23.19 | The goofy lyrics are what makes this album so fun. The beats, samples, rhymes, vocals, production and variety in songs makes the album as a whole fantastic. |

Oh no, that terrible autotune. And to think the horn sample had my hopes up. It's a shame because the beat and the rhythm are actually really nice. I guess I can tolerate it.

13. “Kasvetli Kutlama”: Even with those weird ass vocals I think I loved this, that riff thing was awesome. 4.3
14. “Antes de Ti”: This is like just a really fancy James Bond song. Still genuinely gorgeous tho. 4.1
15. “Fishing for Fishies”: This fucking rules, is the rest of the album this good? 4.3
16. “Lefty Dog (Run, Caper, Run)”: I like this and I get why people like this more, but jesus fuck those vocals are butt ugly. Enjoyed the propulsion of this track though. 3.6

Wind on the storm - Sweet, next. 2.0
Summer - I suppose its smooth enough but I've heard this done much better. I'll keep the artist in my back pocket though. 3.0
Chasing The Sound - Somewhat clumsy honestly, but takes more chances than most dime a dozen folk these days. 3.2
Kasvetli Kutlama - Awesome vocals but this sound in general doesn't do a whole lot for me. It's spooky but oddly silly. 3.1
Antes De Ti - Tickles me right in the showbiz bone. 3.9
Fishing For Fishies - It's fine, not one of their best. 3.4
Lefty Dog - Not fair. 4.0
Mirrorface - Pretty fun for sure. 3.7
Race to the bottom - Pretty neat and evocative atmosphere. Song itself is decent. 3.6
Kanashii Hibi - This kicked my ass. 4.1

04.29.19 | 18. Race to the Bottom - Glen Hansard - 4.0 - This album took me completely by surprise from the get-go, such a farcry from his stuff on "Once". I absolutely love it, but I need to spend a lot more time with it.
19. Pistol Whipped - Sarah McCoy -3.4 Damn that voice is perfect. I was kind of waiting for the song to get going, and it didn't exactly take off the way I would have liked it too. That being the said the final minute was haunting and I want to listen to more of this woman.
20. Kanashii Hibi - Midori -3.8 Leave it to Johnny to rec a blast from the past for me. Haven't listened to Midori since probably 12th grade, which is a real shame because they rule.
22. KITTY KITTY - De Staat - 3.8 I don't know what this is, but It's fucking great. It's so bouncy and fun. It reminds me a tiny bit of the Malibu Ken collab from Tobacco & Aesop Rock
23. Pistol Dave - Epic Beard Man - 3.7 This also rules. I need to get on this, this sotd month has been stellar.
24. Memorial Day - Sharon Van Etten - 3.3 I think I listened to half this album, but I cannot for the life of me remember. This song crafts a really cool atmosphere, but I can't help but to lose focus on this air-y sounding music lately. Kind of like Copeland.
25. Joyride - Kevin Abstract - 2.7 I despise his voice, I hate this trend god dammit. Oh thank god it stopped. Nevermind it didn't. I love the beat to this song a lot though. I'm really, really torn on this, and that only makes me more upset with this song.
26. Undertow - Pain of Salvation -3 goooood I haven't listened to Pain of Salvation since I think 10th grade? This is fine, at some point in my life I would have loved this I feel, but it doesn't do anything for me. Kind of in the same place as the sad indie girl genre
27. Secrets - Submotion Orchestra - 4 oooooo this is kinda jazzy, I love her voice. Another album to add to the must-listen playlist I suppose. Oh my god, the horns, yesss.
28. Delivery Van - Snapped Ankles 3.5 - Papa never disappoints
29. Had a Dollar - Nights - 3.5 - I barely even realized this finished playing. It's such a pleasant and light experience, it makes me want to listen to more. Pretty good yea.

SlothcoreSam
04.30.19 | Memorial Day, 3.6, this is growing on me, starts off a little underwhelming, but it starts getting hauntingly beautiful towards the end.
Joyride, 3.5 fuck autotune, otherwise pretty cool. Get major outkast vibes, and a bit of rasta. Minus 1 for the autotune.
Pain of salvation, 3.1, slow early-metallica-esc guitar intro, vocals are soothing, sounds a bit under produced, like the drums are coming from the bathroom with the door closed. The song itself is good, could imagine the slow build up working well live.
Secrets, 3.9 i like the productions and beats on this, i feel the vocals let it down a bit, not that she is bad, just need something different, chuck on someone with a unique voice or accent like lorde, bjork, or skin from skunk anansie on this, and I'll 5 it. Crazy sax leading to reggae dub style is great.
Delivery Van, 3.4 starts off like something I've made on fruity loops back in the day, then get the 80s sounding English post punk. It's good, might need to spin the rest of their album. There is so much going on on this song, i wonder how they sat around the table and thought, let's add this here, need some computer sounds there.
Had a dollar, 3.4 yep it's putting me to sleep, then a slow bass riff, drums kick in. Mathyrock guitars. Vocals are nice. Yep i need to check them out too. Lots of great selections this month, thanks guys.
Word got around. 1.3, man fuck autotune. Maybe if i drink me some purp, pop some oxys and suck on the tip of my bitches multicolored dreads, I'd get this style of music. |

04.30.19 | "Memorial Day" - Good track, nice melodies, soothing but kinda haunting. 4/5
"Joy Ride" - Video Unavailable - 0/5
"Undertow" - That snare drum in the beginning sounds like a cardboard box, and not in the way people are normally like 'that snare drum sounds like a cardboard box', but an actual cardboard box. Kinda wish it didn't morph into a real sounding snare, cause it might been the world's worst snare drum. Song sounds a lot more pro once it all kicks in, weird mix choice in the beginning. Vox are a bit annoying at times, but the chorus is kinda cool. I don't know. 3/5
"Secrets" - I love the twisted film noir vibe I get from trip hop. Makes me feel like I'm in a dark city street smoking a cigarette, with a flashing streetlamp in the distance with moths dancing around it, while a neon sign a few buildings over is radiating its dim pink light. Not really in the mood for this at the moment, or rarely ever though, but I don't know I guess.. 3.7/5
"Delivery Van" - Simple, quirky song, production helps it out a lot. I used to drive a delivery van so song is VERY relatable. I will probably never listen to this again. 3/5
"Had a Dollar" - Can't use Spotify, and not on Youtube based on my 2 second search. I feel like one of those Amazon reviewers that give a product 1 out of 5 stars because it gets lost in the mail. 0/5
"Word Got Around" - the only thing worse than auto tune vocals are auto tuned steel drums. awful. 1/5

04.30.19 | "Word Got Around"
I mean it changes around. It's not stagnant like a lot of the indie and post-punk recs people pick typically. Yeah, that's the only good thing about this. The overuse of autotune should've been left back in 2009 when it was a big thing. It didn't need to come to the modern year. Those tropical sounding synths and pitched up backup vocals aren't terrible, but they're not for me either. I'd probably give this a more "boring score" rather than a "this sucks" kinda score if it weren't for the autotune abuse. -.5 for not letting autotune die.

KITTY KITTY - This was actually awesome. Feels derivative but its just done so well. 4.2

Memorial Day - Not one of my favorites on the record but great atmosphere. 3.5
Joyride - Love how frantic this sounds. May have to jam the record and quite frankly I outright disliked the first. 4.1
Undertow - Not to be a broken record but its just not for me. Metal ballads consistently rub me the wrong way. 2.5
Secrets - Dislike both the band and the song. Sorry I suppose. 2.7
Delivery Van - Honestly agree with Dungeon. It's fun but doesn't quite have the wow factor. 3.3
