06.09.21 | 5s must be perfect, no blemishes of any kind. Hence my 5s:
Arnold Schwarzenegger Total Body Workout
Soundtrack (Film) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Vektor Terminal Redux |
EclipseInYourEyes
06.09.21 | Most of my 5s are records that just blew me away because of their creativity and/or special approach. Things, that I would've never thought of are even possible. While a 4.5 is a perfectly executed record for me, a 5 has this special spice and genius. |

06.09.21 | “Im not Objective, I rate 5's on albums that i cannot live without”
Same here. There are quite a few 5s I have that have significant flaws *cough* Gold & Gray *cough* but make up for it due to how hard the album hit for me. Now that I’ve been actively looking for new music, I tend rate 5s if I think it’s AOTY material. I maintain that every year has a couple 5s in them |
porcupinetheater
06.09.21 | God Ryus, live life with joy. 5 everything. Eat 5 dinners at once. Don’t tell your spouse about the 5 other people you’re seeing on the side |
Sowing
06.09.21 | Honestly, I rate everything based on how stuff makes me feel. My top 5-10 albums per year usually get a 5 from me, it's basically a category reserved for anything with an outside shot of being my AOTY. Then, as time goes on, I prune down the ones that didn't hold up to 4.5's. Either way, I don't view 5'ing something as a lifelong commitment or a declaration of objective perfection. |
rabidfish
06.09.21 | "I don't view 5'ing something as a lifelong commitment or a declaration of objective perfection."

Sowing
06.09.21 | I used to be ultra protective of my 5's, in fact in 2010 when I first started to get really active here I didn't have a single 5 because I viewed it as an evasive standard of perfection that no album could ever reach. But since that was not as fun as getting hyped, I eventually abandoned that mindset and now I 5 more albums than anyone. |
rabidfish
06.09.21 | I don't think about it too much, but I do like to give time to things before I 5 them. 2 years rule. |

06.09.21 | for me it's an album that I never get tired of hearing, had a super important and formative effect on my music tastes, has an emotional depth that resonates, etc. mine are pretty common albums to 5 but maybe I'm just a pleb. most of my 4.5s I could prob bump to 5, but having fewer makes them feel more special |
StickFeit
06.09.21 | For me a 5 is a record that left a strong and/or emotional impact on me and just means much to me. They need to pass the “you’re stranded on an island for the rest of your life, which records do you take?” Test. |

06.10.21 | to me a 5.0 means that it’s a 5.0 out of 5.0 & the sounds are good or whatever plus the album art is better than your favorite album art |

06.10.21 | 4s are for very great albums
4.2s are for very fucking great albums
4.3s are for very fucking great albums that i want on my cyber imprint
4.5s are 4.3s that deserve it more
4.7s have their own spec reasons for being there
4.9s are 5s but something's like 1% off with them
5s are 5s |
Pikazilla
06.10.21 | what about 3.9s |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.10.21 | 3.9s are to 4s as 4.9s are to 5s |
wildinferno2010
06.10.21 | a 5 is an album that continues to be interesting to me despite having been listened to many, many times. They're albums that I'm convinced I'll love for the rest of my life.
tho checking my 5's now, a few of them aren't quite there yet, so might be time for a prune |
Pheromone
06.10.21 | johnny here rubbing non-staff faces in their own piss on the living room floor as he flexes his oligarch bladder control |
Veks
06.10.21 | For me, a 5 is an album where I like every song and can listen to it front to back without skipping. It has to be an album that defined a certain moment in my life, plus beeing an album that I can go back to years later and still listen front to back and love it. |
wildinferno2010
06.10.21 | "It has to be an album that defined a certain moment in my life"
Yeah, this is also something I think about |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.10.21 | staff ratings are just a set of extra ways to have fewer 5s
the woke ones among u have no need for them |
Relinquished
06.10.21 | yea that’s what it is for me
I don’t care if it’s the most well-composed thing ever if it didn’t impact me in a way that it evokes out of me a certain time or person. To be plugged in, spinning, the playing music for years and enough of it to etch it all in is why I’m all about music. |
anode
06.10.21 | Damn and you have point #1 as a 5. That’s cray. Curious what the emotional significance is of that one |
JustJoe.
06.10.21 | what are emotions |
garas
06.10.21 | 5.0 albums are my endorphin-factories. There is no point of being strict about them... feels good? Feels good! |
Demon of the Fall
06.10.21 | I need to stop being such a bitch and 5 more shit. My ‘I’m gonna 5 this’ stage, to the point where I actually get around to pulling the trigger is absurdly long. My criteria for 4.5ing is strict enough.
So yeah I don’t even really know what constitutes a 5 anymore, but the ‘important albums you can’t live without’ / ‘that you connect with on a higher emotional level’ / ‘that provide something special and unique’ arguments make sense. I don’t think they necessarily need to be perfect. |

06.10.21 | What if a band has made a definite 5 but later they make an album that's still a 5 but it's not as good as the first and you don't feel like devaluing the original 5?

06.10.21 | Ratings are pretend I just 5 albums that make me want to do the chefs kiss thing |
anode
06.10.21 | For me it’s when an album is better than anything I could imagine. I haven’t gotten around to my ratings yet but 5s would def be pig destroyer - prowler in the yard, joy divisions - closer, and System of a Down - toxicity + s/t |
Kompys2000
06.10.21 | Yessss prowler in the yard is one of the hardest 5s out there |
dbizzles
06.10.21 | My definition of a five is shaky at best.
It could mean anything from, 'this is one of my favorite albums,' to, 'this is the best or one of the best albums of it's genre.' |
Storm In A Teacup
06.10.21 | A 5 is often an album with only a single or two put out and the hype must be established. I leave an album 5'd for a year before I listen to it and change the rating. |

06.10.21 | Nowadays, for me, a 5 is something that has remained in my rotation for a long time, or something that stands out in the genre ( in respect to my taste). |
ReturnToRock
06.10.21 | All killer, no filler. No weaker songs, or maybe the weaker songs are still firmly above average and it's everything else that blows the scale. Never grow tired of listening to it, and it never gets weaker no matter how often it gets played. Genre classic, or should be one.
THAT's what a 5 means to me. |
