12.20.21 | I wouldn't say *worry*. Do you? |
anarchistfish
12.20.21 | no, i also smoke weed |
TheSpirit
12.20.21 | no as i also have the power of god and anime on my side |
Demon of the Fall
12.20.21 | interests are only one aspect of anyone's personality, so no
also I'm interested in/passionate about other things anyway, so also no
this doesn't mean my personality is any good, but it exists
P.S. nice looking digs, need to check 6/7 at some point. |
ArsMoriendi
12.20.21 | Honestly, no
I also don't really consider hobbies to be personality traits
If you're worried you're boring though, you can always add some hobbies to your life, like cooking, art, sports, building shit... |
Josh D.
12.20.21 | No, because I don't care if it is. |
Colton
12.20.21 | what josh said [2] but also your hobbies don’t define your personality, the way you interact with the ppl in your life does. and it’s good to have hobbies. most people have no hobbies |
Ryus
12.20.21 | no because i am also handsome |
CugnoBrasso
12.20.21 | Yeah my whole personality is like 40 % music, 30 % shitty books and 30 % memes.
I'm not really worried because we will die eventually lmao |
DavidYowi
12.20.21 | Thanks for the responses everyone. I genuinely do worry I’ve based my personality solely on music. I have been engaging in different activities lately like reading, going to the gym, taking scuba classes, etc., but music is the one thing I feel like I really know how to talk about. That my sole point of connection with others is based on music |
Hyperion1001
12.20.21 | just don’t throw it in other peoples faces for attention and you’re fine brother.
the things you consume and experience don’t define you. |
Cimnele
12.20.21 | music rules, it's basically magic and complex conversations and relationships can be had over its indulgence
|
DungeonBoy
12.20.21 | No, i'd say it's quite the opposite. None of my friends or family listen to the same stuff I do, so it's more of a personal thing. But yeah 15 years ago in high school I was definitely a metal head and thought metal was life but those were very different times for me. |
CottonSalad
12.20.21 | Listening is an important part of expressing personality to others - sometimes, even if you have no idea what someone's talking about, just being willing to listen is a good start! Then we get into ideas about patience...which is possibly a very different thing haha
As far as sharing music with others, it seems Hyperion and Cimnele got ya covered.
Seasonal depression is the worst :] |
Egarran
12.20.21 | it's basically magic [2] |
Grungil
12.20.21 | Whats the opposite of seasonal depression? Seasonal happiness? If so, what do you listen when you´re happy? |
DDDeftoneDDD
12.20.21 | Yes |
Hyperion1001
12.20.21 | get some exercise and jam tunes, i promise it helps more than just about anything. |
Sinternet
12.20.21 | it's not hard to find other hobbies, anyone with only one obsessive interest just strikes me as stunted |
Hyperion1001
12.20.21 | nah i disagree thats a little too harsh buddy. hobbies are a luxury that not everyone has the privilege of enjoying.
if you love something, love it until it hurts. it helps give life meaning. |
CottonSalad
12.20.21 | yeah, 1001 reasons to agree |
TheAntichrist
12.20.21 | all ya gotta do is be a gym rat who likes music then you'll have two personalities. stronkz |
Colton
12.20.21 | literally my main motivation in going to the gym regularly is that it's my favourite way to get stoned and listen to music, cause if I just sit there and listen I get kinda restless. if headphones weren't a thing I probably wouldn't even work out lol |
Colton
12.20.21 | man every sinternet take lately just reeks of seething bitterness I hope he's ok
my favourite is "anyone who has thousands of scrobbles for one artist/band is faking it for attention" |
Demon of the Fall
12.20.21 | People who regularly take potshots at others for being ‘inferior’ in some way are usually lacking in self-esteem or fulfilment themselves, probably both. |
onionbubs
12.20.21 | music rules. its easily my biggest interest and i spend a lot of time devoted to it, but im also majoring in production and tryna do it for work so im cool w it since that passion drives a lot of that work, turning this lifelong obsession into something productive. even outside of that tho, i get so much personal fulfillment just listening to it. that said its still not like, my entire personality theres plenty of other stuff thats shaped who i am, and its not even something i really even need to talk about that much (altho it always rules to talk about ofc) |
Minushuman24
12.20.21 | yep |
anode
12.21.21 | God I wish man. I don’t know anyone who shares common musical interest with me so it takes a backseat as far as my personality is concerned. I also don’t like to identify with my musical taste and try to listen to it just because I like it |
MO
12.21.21 | No not at all |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.21.21 | music is too big and too broad to have much constrictive bearing on anyone's personality and nothing you consume from it will ever reflect you in as much detail as you think it does so all is good
unless you mean that you're worried the habit of consuming music is your whole personality in which case uh uh uh uh uhhhhh 6 fucks!! |
Pheromone
12.21.21 | all my banter comes from 1970s swing |
Demon of the Fall
12.21.21 | yeah I can definitely see how music consumption could in theory take over your life, any hobby could theoretically do so if you're obsessive enough. Otherwise nah, you're good. It's healthy to have multiple interests of course, but it isn't a necessity to force yourself into things you legitimately struggle giving a shit about.
I'm happily married to someone who has no active interest in any of my major hobbies, so if that's not an indication your personality can be (and usually is) a completely separate thing, then I don't know what is. |
Pheromone
12.21.21 | what is your partners favourite converge album |
Demon of the Fall
12.21.21 | I'd hazard a guess at the new one, just take out all the 'shouty stuff' |
osmark86
12.21.21 | music is a massive part of my life too. I don't go a day without listening to something I like. maybe try to combine it with some new hobbies you can nerd yourself with? have you tried creating your own music? that's an entire new world just within music. but there are tons of wonderful things in this world that is also interesting to do, like hiking, climbing, programming, cooking. in any case, like most have pointed out already, your personality is defined by how you interact with other people, not your interests. anyways, hope your seasonal anxiety cools down a bit. I'm sure you're a wonderful person. |
rabidfish
12.21.21 | The more I read about aesthetic theory the more I convince myself devoting your entire life to music is fucking based. Literally fuck everything else lol |
Demon of the Fall
12.21.21 | what's that? |
Calc
12.21.21 | there are worse things to have make up your whole personality.
like one's political beliefs for example. that's very common here in 'merica |
nightbringer
12.21.21 | "I'm happily married to someone who has no active interest in any of my major hobbies, so if that's not an indication your personality can be (and usually is) a completely separate thing, then I don't know what is."

12.21.21 | calc the centrist pass it on |

12.21.21 | that's an insult these days right? |

12.21.21 | I would distinguish between personality and identity. I don't think its even conceptually coherent to say that music listening is part of one's personality. Personality can be a factor in why you listen to music, of the kind you do, with the frequency you do, but I don't think listening to music can itself be a personality trait. Identity is hard to define but you could certainly closely align your sense of self with your music taste. Many people do, to the point that belonging to a certain musical subculture is their primary identity-marker. |
Demon of the Fall
12.21.21 | Undoubtedly true. I do find it strange in the modern age though as restricting yourself to a specific music subculture isn't an expectation anymore (which is great). Sure, if that's your desire then fine, but I imagine people end up forming bonds for reasons that aren't actually related to music - even if that was the initial reasoning behind being part of the same peer group. |
rabidfish
12.21.21 | Well put, nice distinction. |
BlazinBlitzer
12.24.21 | Sometimes, but the bigger mental block I've had in past conversations was with talking about any topic outside of my interests, not just music. I've instinctively felt bad about giving minimal input or seeming disinterested, but I know that as long as I felt like I was open-minded to the other person's interest, then that's all I can do in situations where that happens. In fact, specific interests like an expansive musical palette make you stand out in a general crowd where most are uncomfortable with branching outside of routine interests. Also, part of your personality is how you express those interests and not just the interest itself. This is something I'm still developing now (being a less monotone speaker, sounding more confident in opinions, etc.). Situational practice at these things has helped a lot in my case. |
menawati
12.24.21 | You like music, it touches you emotionally, nothing wrong with that. Its just a projection of your personality. Maybe you at least have one, unlike the masses of battery hen social media poisoned drones that make up about 90% of the population who wouldn't consume any sort of media unless it has 10000 thumbs up from total bell-ends. |
