Top 10 ingredients for a metal classic
Combine at least any of the following seven ingredients and you are guaranteed to make a hit |
1 | | Demolition Hammer Epidemic of Violence
Must be fast.
Maybe the most important ingredient of all. None of that mid tempo stuff. |
2 | | Cryptopsy None So Vile
Must be Heavy.
Avoid clean vox and guitars. Let’s Keep it harsh. |
3 | | Pig Destroyer Terrifyer
Must have acceptable subject matter
If you’re going to sing about your ex, it better be because you just stuffed her dead body into a vat of acid, not because she left you for a drug dealer in high school. (Other acceptable subjects are murder, vikings, women, winter, and communism) |
4 | | Suffocation Effigy of the Forgotten
Must blastbeat for at least 50% of the song (preferably more) |
5 | | Dying Fetus Wrong One To Fuck With
Must have (some) tunes
55 minutes of harsh noise is cool, but remember to throw in at least one or two ear catching parts at some point in the album |
6 | | Code Orange Embrace Me // Erase Me
NO angst.
This is the most important of the no-nos. Seriously none of that fruity shit. |
7 | | ulver Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitler
NO low energy
Second most important no-no. metal that lacks energy (drone metal, post-metal) generally sucks and even the slower, shittier genres like alt metal and blackgaze can make good use of this principal. |
8 | | Rings of Saturn Ultu Ulla
NO phd level music theory.
Anything beyond major/minor modes, the circle of fifths, or basic polyrhythms is out. |
9 | | AC/DC Back In Black
NO pop or epic choruses
We're not here to write anthems for your boomer dad |
10 | | Kamelot Silverthorn
Last by not least, NO opera.
in other words, NO metal extravaganzas. NO symphonies. NO epic soundscapes with flutes and shit that run 90 min and could double as medieval sci-fi video game music. The most you should ever go in this direction is melodeath, which is sweet. |
