What Is Emo?

Growing up and listening to music around the time that American Idiot came out and My Chemical Romance was at their hayday, I heard the term "emo" flashed around quite a bit. Can anyone help me out with the true definition? I am not really sure what makes a band "emo" because I don't buy the whole "they sing about suicide" garbage. Also, does anyone have any recs that are essential to the genre? Thanks.
1I was told that this was emo

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge

"Emo" dressing singer, talks about emotional problems, and heavier side of pop-punk music.
3But isn't THIS real emo?
