ROUND 9
TRIP HOP
Saves:
L4titudes - 2
butcherboy - 1
50iL - 1 (second save)
Please keep jams under 1 hour and 30 minutes | 2 | | Stateless Matilda
sincerelyaural
Starting things off strong in the trip hop round with “Matilda.” Now, i’m no expert in trip hop but this one felt far more organic than its more electronic counterparts. The percussion and acoustic instrumentation really helps give the album a special uniqueness. It felt familiar (like the radiohead-esque ballad of “Im on Fire”) yet wholly distinct (The bass-y and jammin’ “Ariel”).
3.80/5 | 3 | | UNKLE Psyence Fiction
Conmaniac
First off, surprised how many big names were a part this record. The album felt modern, fresh and pretty slick. Great variety going on here too, the risky rock track “Nursery Rhyme” even worked pretty well in context. “Psyence Fiction” to me can be best described as if Radiohead decided to make a trip hop album (not surprising as Thom York himself is featured on “Rabbit in your Headlights”).
3.90/5 | 4 | | Massive Attack Blue Lines
butcherboy
The album starts off by pulling no punches on that bass. There is a slower, patient pace throughout the whole record and it maintains it very successfully. Really dug some of the soul aspects and sampling. It’s the normie opinion, but I think I prefered “Mezzanine” just a little bit (this one is still pretty sweet tho, felt more lush than Mezz).

*IN DANGER* / *ELIMINATED :(* | 5 | | Broadway Project Compassion
pjorn
The best way I can describe “Compassion” is an outdoors-y and varied trip hop record with a hint of jazz and even psychedelica. There's a great amount of sampling and tight instrumentation here (there's even a guitar solo straight out of the 60s psyche rock era on “No Pain”). Every song feels controlled and similar in it’s attempt to sound sophisticated yet natural.
3.75/5 | 6 | | Goldfrapp Felt Mountain
ArsMoriendi
“Felt Mountain” is a haunting record. It can feel slightly unhinged yet dangerously focused on tracks like “Human” but also offer dream like soundscapes that would go eerily well if combined with a moonlit lake backdrop (“Pilots,” the title track, and the second half of “Oompa Radar”). Nice vox.
3.75/5 | 7 | | Hooverphonic The Magnificent Tree
Dewinged
Possibly the most poppy/straight forward rec of the bunch. The album may not have the electronic savviness of the other entries but this seems to be purposeful. Instead I was given the lovely and sensual vocal stylings of Geike Arnaert. Geike is front and center here and delivers some very ethereal tunes, big fan of “Autoharp” and “Mad About You.”
3.75/5 | 8 | | Long Arm The Branches
Archelirion
A well crafted trip/jazz hop record for fans of FlyLo or Nujabes. While “The Branches” doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, there’s still some nice personal/original additions to give the record some individuality. There's a higher emphasis on ambience and it’s more float-y than other records of its class. Short lived vocal samples sputter in and out, pianos and violin create gorgeous soundscapes, and some brass instrumentation help the listener chill and enjoy the ride.

*ROUND WINNER* | 9 | | Bowery Electric Beat
L4titudes
“Beat” is an album that is quite dense in atmosphere. Like a thick fog of bass and urban nightlife. On the flip side however, the album conjures up feelings of nostalgic shoegaze with the use of some angelic vocal melodies. The pace of the album is slow but rock steady. The beats never falter for the full duration of songs yet demand unceasing attention and concentration.
3.80/5 | 10 | | Emiliana Torrini Love In the Time of Science
50iL
A cold, vocal focused dream pop like record. Torrini’s voice is soothing yet has an underlying mystery about it, the album’s beats and melodies seem to really accentuate this. The record has an ability to freeze time around you and place you a blue-hued isolation, see “Tuna Fish” for the best example of this phenomenon. There’s a good balance of electronic and traditional elements here. Nothing tries to be overly complex, but it doesn't hurt the album as much as i believe it helps it.
