Label Fight: Victory Vs Matador

2009-08-13 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 26 Comments
Matador Records co-owner Gerard Cosley and Victory Records head Tony Brummel have become involved in another war of words- or just one, to be exact: KARMA.

On Monday night/Tuesday morning, Cosley had the misfortune to watch his South Austin home burn down with all of his possessions lost in the fire. On Wednesday morning, Brummel sent Cosley an email with the word "KARMA" in large font, referring to Cosley's numerous criticisms of his label's business practices on his blog.

Cosley said: "I think he deserves to have it widely circulated. Brummel can rub himself raw at the thought of my suffering personal or material loss ; if something similar happens to him, I’ll be the first person to ship Tony a box of good records. They might be the first decent ones he’s ever heard."

Brummel responded in an email, not to Cosley but to popular pop music site AbsolutePunk. He initially appears to deny the charge, then justifies it, and then sort of denies it again. Brummel wrote:

"I do not know and have never spoken to Gerard Cosloy or anyone at Matador. I have never said anything derogatory about the label (that he is part owner of along with the company being 50% owned by Martin Mills at Beggars Banquet), its bands or anyone that works there. However, over the last several years Cosloy has gone out of his way to take shots at me (via his blog), my company and my artists.

"He even took the time to create his own rendition of our logo (his rendition has two male bulldogs having sex). If standing up for my company and my artists is wrong to some people that is too bad. It is my job and obligation. I do not have the time or desire to hurt Cosloy, his company or artists. I am not happy that he lost his home but his immature, snide and unwarranted actions are bad karma. 'If you don’t have anything nice to say (especially about someone that you do not know), don’t say anything at all.'

"He should focus on his company and artists instead of blogging. The man is at least 8 years older than me. As a man, why not “man up” and pick up the phone if you have a problem with someone? I am an easy guy to find. Regardless of his juvenile ramblings I wish him and his company the best of luck."

If there was actually arson involved, that's as low as it gets. He was probably driven insane by listening to the bands he signed and went on a homicidal rampage.

Orrrr this is a promotion for Emmure's new album, "Felony". Victory records decided to promote the record by commiting a real felony.

I'll stop with the bad jokes now.

Victory Records could burn to the ground and I don't think anyone would care.

good.

from wikipedia:
"In 2009, Andrew Elderbaum, formerly of Victory Records pop punk band Bayside announced he was creating a band called Victory Records. Elderbaum stated "I have a new project called Victory Records, and when Tony gets around to suing me after he finishes duping some other 18 year old kid into signing away his songs for 5 albums, we'll change the name to Victory Rex, because satire is protected by the constitution and Brummel is not." The band's bio on their myspage page [www.myspace.com/victoryrecordsny] also states "[We] decided to call the band Victory Records as an hommage to the bald man whose commericalization of peoples heart and soul made all this disillusionment possible", referring to Tony Victory."
