Speech Debelle Wins Mercury Prize

2009-09-09 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 8 Comments
The 2009 Mercury Prize was awarded to debutante Speech Debelle at a ceremony in London last night.

The South London rapper took home the award for her album Speech Therapy, released to under-the-radar acclaim in June.

The Mercury Prize is awarded yearly to new and underground artists and carries a prize haul of £20,000 ($33,040), however it's the accompanying increase in album sales that is most lucrative for the artists. Last year's winners, Elbow, recorded a sevenfold increase in sales for their album, The Seldom Seen Kid.

Past winners of the Mercury Prize include Suede (1993), Portishead (1995), Pulp (1996) and Dizzee Rascal (2003). Perhaps the most notable runner-up was Radiohead's OK Computer in 1997, a feat the Oxford band repeated thrice more with Amnesiac (2001), Hail To The Thief (2003) and In Rainbows (2008).

Full list of nominees (with betting odds):

Florence and the Machine - Lungs. 11/4 favorite
Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum. 7/2
Speech Debelle - Speech Therapy. 7/2
Bat for Lashes - Two Suns. 7/1
The Horrors - Primary Colours. 7/1
Lisa Hannigan - Sea Sew. 10/1
Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires. 10/11
La Roux - La Roux. 10/1
Glasvegas - Glasvegas. 14/1
The Invisible - The Invisible. 33/1
Sweet Billy Pilgrim - Twice Born Men. 33/1
Led Bib - Sensible Shoes. 33/1

It's basically for creative/innovative mainstream British music albums. The judging panel is always pretty intent on surprising people.

Florence should've won this but as soon as she became favourite she stood no chance, lol.

Mercury isn't usually far wrong to be honest though, and I'm genuinely going to check this out. Friendly Fires and Florence are the best of the nominees that I know, though.

Gotta admit I was pleasantly surprised by the performance she gave after the award was announced, especially since her acceptance speech was the most illiterate mongfest ever put to television.

Might even review it. I would need to hear it first. That will take a while to happen.
