No Doubt Suing Activision
2009-11-05 by Davey Boy STAFF | 43 Replies | 1310 Views

According to Rolling Stone, the reunited No Doubt have filed a lawsuit against gaming company Activision, claiming "fraudulent inducement and breach of contract". The lawsuit pertains to the misuse of their avatars in the game Band Hero.

No Doubt are not happy that players can use No Doubt to sing any song from the game’s tracklist. The band has claimed that they only agreed to have their likenesses perform 3 No Doubt songs, and not tracks from other artists.

My bad. I guess then Modern Warfare is the only IP Activision owns which I actually care about. And yes, both are evil, but recently EA seems less malign.

Ohh fucking wahh, who gives a shit if you're video game likeness is used to play other artists songs and not just your own...that's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard to come out of the Rockband/Guitar Hero/ect. camps.

Band Hero? Really? Where the hell did this one come from

it's not like they actually care about said issue. however, they do care that they found a loophole in the contract to make themselves some more money.

Well then my next argument is why the fuck do they care...I guess Courtney Love has started a trend...at least Kurt was dead so you could see why it might be questionable, but honestly why do they care what a virtual replica of them is doing in a video game? Is it really worth suing over. Ps. Fuck you.

Because it's illegal. Making use of a persons likeness when they haven't agreed to it is illegal and has been for some time. And what I find interesting is the number of people in this thread calling them money-grubbers and saying they shouldn't care, as though you wouldn't do the same thing. The only people who ever talk about how they wouldn't do anything just for the money are people who'll never be in a situation to have that much money. If Activision broke a contract and No Doubt wants to sue that's completely fine and technically the right thing to do.

"my band is too ligit to be seen lip-synching to the likes of T-Swift, and Aly and AJ..."

i mean they ARE a pop band right...?

im sure there is some sort of fine print that they didnt understand... just like there was with Love...
i mean activision misleading artists isnt cool... and it prolly doesnt encourage artists to work with them in the future...

i still dont understand what the fuss is about...

So by your understanding only bands who are super-underground, who've never been heard by more than 5 people should be allowed to claim breach of contract? You still haven't explained how it makes them seem like elitists, suing for breach of contract doesn't say "I am better than everyone else" it says "give me my money you shady game developer".

maybe im reading this too similarly to the Kobain incident, where the reasoning behind the whole mess was primarily concerned with the image of the artist performing songs that are out of character and defaming their name... hence me thinking that it makes them sound pretentious...

... if activation owes them money then by all means i hope they get it... unfortunately for them, i bet activision has their bases covered...

... i say anyone has the right to claim a breach of contract... i just dont think they will get it... so why sound whinny in the process?
