Kno threatens to quit

2011-02-01 by InASilentWay | 55 Comments
Due to fans recently revealing samples used by Kno, which were uncleared, he has threatened to quit producing.

In Kno's words, "I take responsibility for my actions. I make illegal art & have accepted the responsibility for that for 10 years. The letter of the law has been established for decades on this issue, so if people are as clueless to these facts as you seem to think I won’t be participating anymore because their clueless-ness doesn’t change reality. I didn’t ask anyone to accost people on YouTube—I just said I’m quitting if people insist on doing it & you and “allyhitch” got your feelings hurt about it."

"If I quit, there are two targets—myself and those fans who would miss me and what I do.

The people you consider victims are still free to discuss samples, download songs for free and tell artists and their fans why they are “delusional”."

"The music I make infringes on copyrights. I am aware of this and have been aware of this, that is why I don’t stress getting rich off of it, I tell people to download it if they want to and I sink any money I do make back into making more records. I am not “blaming fans”, I’m stating facts—public discussion of specific instances of copyright infringement in my work is making it impossible to even create the music period, even if I were to give it away for free. It would still end up on Youtube and I’d still get served by Google-searching lawyers and publishing houses who think they might be able to squeeze money out of me.

APOS would have cost 3+ million dollars to clear all of the samples on it—but some people have told me it literally SAVED THEIR LIVES. Should it not exist? Should I now be lectured on legal morality by people with just as many skeletons in their closets and blunts in their ashtrays just because they want to defend their right to talk about samples on one of the biggest websites in the world?

It seems people have forgotten the nature of a true artist—I do this because I enjoy it, I think it sounds dope and I think it holds non-monetary value to people—legalities be damned. Not to get signed, not get on MTV, not to buy a Bentley.

Because of this, I can quit anytime I’d like for any reason I’d like—but I’m not going to be dishonest about the reasons behind it to save a few people’s feelings. People seem to have issues with the truth when it stands in direct opposition with what they feel entitled to."

Kno quitting would be a damn shame. This sounds pretty fucking ridic... The sampling laws have really damaged hip-hop and made it harder to create music in a legit way. Still I realize they need to be there to protect creative rights yodda yodda.

yeah

a. who the fuck is kno
b. where were these samples used
c. why does anything fans 'reveal' have anything to do with the law
d. i can't tell where that incoherent mess of a quote ends and begins because there are so many internal quote marks
e. what is APOS
f. basically what is the legal issue here im confused

dude doesn't have a wikipedia page

i mean a news article should really have at least ONE clear sentance summing up what is going on for people who aren't already in the 'kno'

I've never even heard of this guy, but the article seemed pretty clear.

Here's the 'average sputnik user' version:

He makes music and uses samples that he doesn't have permission to use. His dumbass fans like to go to Youtube and other hotbeds of intelligent conversation and point out what samples he has used so that the evil corporations can easily figure out what to sue his ass for - the end.

but using samples is commonplace, willie

and its a fan's right to discuss the music

i don't understand why this situation is different from the billion of other producers who use unsecured samples

i am not trolling; i genuinely believe this article is poorly written

his sputnik page has 1 album released very recently

meanwhile hes talking about 3 million for what I assume is a different album

i have no idea what this guy's music sounds like or how he uses the samples

using unsecured samples is not necessarily illegal (see the shit girl talk pumps out)...

ok now that i was able to youtube some stuff, it's rap music

so basically he should lawyer up and stop writing shit like the quote above and this:

kno said on Monday, 01 March 2010:
The best way I can explain it is -- you wouldn't purposely snitch on your weed dealer, would you? Especially if he didn't care if you came to his house and smoked for free all the time? He isn't trying to get rich -- he sells dimes to a VERY small clientele for f***'s sake -- but it is HIGH GRADE because he likes to see people get baked. He could be selling dirt by the pound and drive a Lexus, but he doesn't because even if what he's doing is illegal, he at least has some quality standards and principles -- and you like good weed, so you wouldn't do your boy like that. Right?

basically, you can't seriously expect people to stop posting google-able chatter...

Nothing this guy has done before or will do after will top his work on the album he is talking about in the article CunninLynguists - A Piece of Strange.

It's a phenomenal album and whether or not you're a fan of hip hop, if you cans simply appreciate music pushing the boundaries, it will blow your mind.

even though i am not very good in english i still understand the article. well, i had to read it like 3 times to get the gist of it.

anyway, no matter how he puts it, its illegal what he did, he knows it and should live with the fact that people will point it out at some point.

i understand where he is coming from: i am download music from the internet coz i dont have the money to buy all of it so i am on the same boat as he is and i wouldnt like it if some people snitched me to some lawyers.

I don't see why hip-hop gets away with sampling everything and people think it's brilliant. Personally, I think the artists should go way of Dre and have new drummers and instrumentalists come into the studio and he samples the music he has paid them for / they allow him to use. I know he's used samples in the past, but the bulk of his music is made in this fashion now. What just because you are cheap as fuck and want to pump out a beat in 10 minutes means I'm supposed to call you a genius?? No. Every other genre of music has a band or someone creating the music out of nothing. Sure, some bands use samples, but it isn't the backbone of the genre. Shit, Electronica is just as synthetic as hip-hop and it's still someone sitting down and making the beat from scratch, not sampling Funky Drummer, EQ'ing it, and calling it a song. So, anyone who gets caught sampling, tough shit man. You know the laws. If you're REALLY that creative and great, then you can create music from nothing. You don't need sampling to create good hip-hop. And I'm sure many will disagree. But go ask Clyde Stubblefield how he feels not seeing a dime in the last 20 years.

Everybody knows that any good hip-hop producer uses illegal samples

any good hip-hop producer? really? I didn't know that

I don't see why hip-hop gets away with sampling everything and people think it's brilliant.

well people usually "get away with it" because they clear the samples

McDiggitz

No... No they don't. If you knew who Clyde Stubblefield was and what I was talking about in my last sentance, you wouldn't say that at all. Funky Drummer is the most sampled drum beat in the known musical world and Clyde is the drummer who performed it. On the record, it's been in over 140 different songs (and that's just the ones that make money and can be determined). I'm sure it's much higher. Has good ol' Clyde seen a dime? Nope. Bet your ass he hasn't. So no somber, they do NOT "clear the samples". They distort it with EQ and various other plugs and hope that no one can recognize it.

@ McDiggitz
I'm not sure of the specifics in this case but I do know that the performer of a certain song doesn't always own the rights to that song, so most likely, someone is getting paid of that sample

I'm sorry if I was unclear. People on youtube were going to his songs and naming samples he used ( which were uncleared ) . Simple as that. You wouldn't think it would be a big deal but It is for Kno. He's received a letter stating copy right infrigment I believe.

Also Kno had been posting the names of the youtube users that did this for everyone to see which upset some people. He talks about that in one of the quotes.

And really I highly reccomend you go the link it will make it easier to understand.
Sorry again for the confusion
