Akerfeldt Quits Bloodbath

2012-04-13 by AllGabrielsAreGlass | 85 Comments
Mikael Akerfeldt, Frontman of Opeth, has quit being vocalist of Bloodbath according to an interview conducted by Loudwire.com.

“I’m not in Bloodbath,” says Akerfeldt. “They have a new singer, which I can’t say who it is. Bloodbath for me was never a serious project, it was just something I did for fun. We did a few songs on the last North American tour, we did two songs at the very last show because we were touring with Katatonia, so the whole Bloodbath band was there. It’s still fun you know? But I think that some of the other guys in Bloodbath want to take it to the next level, which I don’t really want to do because I’m so busy anyways.”

“It doesn’t really have to do with anything with my screaming vocals, it’s just that it’s not a progressive project for me. It’s just paying tribute to death metal and I’ve done it for such a long time. And when it stops being fun, I don’t really want to participate. We do things so rarely it’s always been fun. The shows we’ve done have been fun, but I don’t feel the need to do it.”

I'm not surprised cuz in other interviews he's been saying he wants to drop the usage of death growls in later Opeth albums (or at least that's what his implication sounds like), but who knows he might change his mind.

As long as the new vocalist is just as good as Mike is at growlz. I'll be fine. But it sounds like Mike is hinting that they're leaning to have new material with prog elements in it.

full on prog it seems, he's actually excited to start writing again after doing Heritage...he's never been excited about writing a new album. If that's not a clear indication I don't know what is.

Opeth played The Grand Conjuration and ye olde encore classic Demon of the Fall when I saw them on the Heritage/Hunter tour with Mastodon this week. It was nice to see (after the growl-devoid Heritage tour) that they weren't completely and forevermore adverse to playing the heavier tunes with harsh vocals. I don't think they will ever return to that in new material, however.

Yea I caught the tour in NYC on Wednesday. Their Heritage stuff was great to hear live but you could tell the crowd was a little antsy to hear more of the old stuff. Good thing he ended the set well. It was my first time seeing Opeth but to me he sounded fine growling and the crowd fuckin loved it.

As for Bloodbath. I never really listened to them a whole lot, but Akerfeldt has a point when it comes to death metal. There isnt much room for growth if you're playing it straight up since there are so many limitations for purists. Opeth pretty much got as prog as you can get with death metal. Somebody has to keep experimenting with death metal to keep it fresh unless you want the same shit over and over.

The thing with Heritage was it was a very solid prog rock album, but it wasnt really anything great. More like paying tribute to 70s prog. Which is fine, but the next album needs to build more on that and try something new. Bands change. Just hope they dont get worse.

People, people, people. Dan Swano will never do death metal vocals live. he says himself he can sustain them for a verse or there about then get considerable discomfort and stop. Plus I'm pretty sure he is busy with a melodic/progressive dm project called "Witherscape" as well as planning the new Nightingale. Nope, just bring back Peter Tantgren (even if he is busy with new Hypocrisy), get Johan Hegg or quit while your still respected as a band

I'm reading some of these comments and facepalming repeatedly. Akerfeldt isn't losing his edge you fucktards. The man has been playing death metal for over 20 years and his musical interests are changing. I agree that his growls are nowhere near amazing as they used to be 10 years ago, but I just saw Opeth this past Wednesday in NYC and they played The Grand Conjuration and Demon of the Fall. And guess what?! He still fucking owned that shit. So seriously, grow the fuck up, try using your brains a little, and just realize that people's interests change. He's stated on several occasions that death metal will always be near and dear to his heart but sometimes the musician needs to make music that appeases him, not only the little crybabys that demand death growls. I will continue to listen and love whatever music the man makes.
