Fates Warning Guardian DVD 2017-03-18 by Trey STAFF | 17 Comments | Legendary progressive metal act Fates Warning celebrated the 30th anniversary of their third album, Awaken the Guardian, in 2016. The album was to become their final release to feature vocalist John Arch. That era's lineup was rounded out by bassist Joe DiBiase, drummer Steve Zimmerman, along with current guitarist Frank Aresti and, of course, Jim Matheos. Awaken the Guardian also holds the honor as the band's very first release to debut on the Billboard charts.
Awaken the Guardian remains an important album for the band's fans worldwide. Decibel Magazine remarked in their Hall of Fame no. 134 entry that "Each member still talks with great pride of its creation, each blown away by the feedback it has received since its release 30 years ago, each amazed at the powerful and positive impact it has had on so many lives." To celebrate 30 years since the album's release, Matheos reassembled the Awaken the Guardian-era lineup for two special festival appearances: Keep it True XIX in Lauda-Konigshofen, Germany and Prog Power USA XVII in Atlanta, GA. Fortunately for fans that were not able to attend, each show was filmed and recorded!
John Arch comments about the experience: "It was truly a surreal experience being able to share the spirit of 'Awaken The Guardian' at these shows. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the fans that have given back so much over the 30 year span since the album's release. To all our family and friends, much gratitude."
Awaken the Guardian Live consists of both festival performances in their entirety. This piece of progressive metal history will be available on CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and double gatefold vinyl.

I pre-ordered the blu-ray/vinyl package. Well, worth it.
| | | Awesome
| | | one live album is just the studio album played twice with a few extra songs? seems kinda silly to me, but I guess if you're a big Fates fan it would be cool
| | | would've been really cool to see a Sympathetic Resonance song or two
| | | it is their best album, so gonna pre-order this now.

The point is that it is the original line-up from the actual album. Only the guitar players are still in the band...and one only kind of.
| | | yeah recording it was a must.....looks like they only had about 80 minutes in their slot as well since both performances were at festivals
| | | Saw most of the prog power footage on YouTube a couple days after the event. Good shit and a high quality fan made video - some of those cameras on phones are amazing.
| | | Great news, I wish they'd done the same (a live DVD) for A Pleasant Shade of Grey i.e. as a bonus disc in Still Life.
| | | I saw them last January and they were great, really humble and thankful for the people coming to see them. They played something from everything since No Exit, but understandably nothing from the Arch years. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing this line-up as well, but I doubt the chances of that ever happening. Regardless, Fates Warning will always be the true kings of progressive metal.
Also, everyone is always talking about Awaken the Guardian when talking about Fates, but I love The Spectre Within just as much. It's the perfect merger between their old-school metal influences and their later style. It's full of great riffs and Arch is terrific as well.
| | | Spectre goes so hard agreed
| | | Hoping they release a DVD with songs from their modern albums as well
| | | I just ordered this set! I heard some of the awesome recreations of the Arch-songs on YouTube, and I'm certainly looking forward to hearing the others.
| | | 'Hoping they release a DVD with songs from their modern albums as well'
yes, especially on the theories tour!
| | | My order was delayed, but got it today. Vinyl and Blu-Ray... already had the MP3s from promo. Time for a review.
| | | Willie dude Theories Of Flight man.......know you reviewed it with justice......incredible record
| | | Theories if flight DVD!
