Pale Horses had some of their best tracks ever (Red Cow/Dorothy, Rainbow Signs) as well as a few forgettable ones. I found the production a bit flat at first but it grew on me just as the record did, and now it's one of my favorite releases from them.

That bloodcurdling scream buried underneath layers and layers of guitar and static that comes in around 2:50 is just so unexpectedly effective. This is such a sludgy, murky, subtle little earworm.

This isn't quite is stylistically distinct as some of their other stuff but they execute the song so well that it doesn't matter in the slightest. Hype is soaring.

This track is outstanding. Absolutely stunned honestly, the ending is some of the best work they’ve output.

Was kinda hoping the more typical Weiss delivery was gonna come in like a fucking hydrogen bomb, but the song is great and the restraint is kind of nice after a couple listens.

I feel like if those screams just came in strong in the mix it would have been one of the greatest mwY moments. Interesting choice to bury them

Yeah that's the only thing I'm still not sure about. The artful restraint of the screams is kinda cool, but I can't imagine a scenario in which the song is hurt by Weiss delivering those lines full power. Kind of like how his entire contribution to "No Friend" was muffled; it's interesting at first but you end up wondering how incredible that track could have been. What do I know though. Excited to see how it fits into the LP or EP.

i suspect Weiss' voice isn't what it once was and muffling it is a polite way of acknowledging that he just isn't capable of the same screams/yowls he once was that happens to pay dividends

Could very well be. I'll be inclined to agree if this is how the screams are executed across the whole album. I'd be a little surprised though; mwY has seen some intense days but I don't know if they were enough to damage his voice.

Idk, he sounded great at all ranges when I saw them last(?) winter and his harsher vocals were mint when he let go on PH. I’d lean more toward it being a stylistic choice, maybe making it a point to give us something a little less by the numbers (read: classic) when it was obviously ripe for the picking.

Song would be 10/10 if the screams were louder in the mix and the guitar solo didn’t have those weird out of key notes that clash with the melodic feel of the rest of the song. Hopefully the harsh vocals will be mixed normally in the other songs because it feels like such a waste.

As Sowing already alluded to, that is not a statement you would make if you understood the history of this band and the deep exploration of faith they've made throughout their albums. This song itself is a thoughtful meditation on the intersection of many faiths and the inability of all of them to fully attain an understanding of God. As someone who used to be a very devout Christian who for a long time struggled with faith, it's the devoutness, doubt and openness in Aaron's songwriting that makes his contemplation of the christian faith, and all of its western and eastern counterparts, striking, relatable and meaningful.

gorgeous ep - makes me extra excited because of how mellow and beautiful this is, it makes me feel like there will be some genuinely heavy songs on the full length, as people have been talking about

October 5 is the release date. Just before my birthday too. Stoked!!

I decided to simply order the physical EP and LP. None of the shirts I wanted were in stock.

yeah I just got the collectors 200g vinyl, and it was hard enough to justify paying that much so I definitely wasn’t going to spend $105. really lovely ep and listening to the single again gave me chills, and I didn’t want to miss out on what looks to be an incredible work - both the music and the packaging itself

I got through the EP once on the way to work and it was pleasant but didn't grip me. I'm sure that will change. I do think the LP will knock it out of the park though.

That's where I'm at right now. On my 2nd listen, I can't say I'm blown away or anything. It's nice, but really stripped down musically. Some songs (Dirty Rain) don't even sound like mwY, kinda odd. I'm sure it'll grow on me, especially as I dig into the lyrics

^that's the case with every mwY for me, ever. always starts with mild disappointment followed by that "oh my god" moment where you realize you're the imperfect one for not realizing it is perfect.

yeah it’s kinda like the new anthony green LP for me in that it was really lovely to listen to but I wasn’t like “man I need to hear this over and over again.” I think once the lp is out this will be a really interesting contrast to what the style the display there though, and might make this even better if that makes sense.

Yeah so even after the 2nd listen just now, the last two tracks (August 6th and Kristy) reeeally resonated with me. Also, while all the lyrics here are incredible, Winter Solstice is grabbing me by the shoulders right now:

I wouldn't worry Dungeon, it's pretty clear that the EP and LP are going to be opposites. I think this EP was just a way for them to release some of the lighter stuff that they still liked. The LP will bring the fire.
