This song is fun but also very forgettable. This band moving in a riffier direction worked on their last album, but I'm not sure if it'll work again. Even then, I listened to a few tracks off Forever Unbecoming after this and I think that album might've worn off on me a bit. Pelican are so much fun live but I'm not really sure if they've put out an album worth revisiting after Fire in Our Throats

nah he fits super well. they've always been riff-centric and had that roadtrip groove to their tunes, no need for the drums to outshine.

man that riffed pretty hard. guitar tones sound different/a little weird. they played some new songs live when i saw them last and they were all super heavy.

while i don't think their drummer necessarily holds them back cuz i think all of their albums are incredible, i have always wished i could how they would sound with a better drummer. i try not to give him too much grief because he's obviously a pro and i am not and he's fine i guess, but i just have not really heard him get that much better for like 15 years for this band. his timing has gotten better, but he's just not that creative. i agree that he really may just maxed out his capabilities and he's not just playing to the simple groove to fit the sound, but i just really think that's all he's got. a really good example of that kind of drumming done really well is abe cunningham from deftones. he's super subdued and really lays back...but he's good...and creative. even Lars is another example. sometimes i sit down and jam to pelican tunes and i come up with all types of cool ideas that just aint their in their music.

having said all that they are still like a top 5 band all time for me. this new stuff sounds riff tastic.

I like the drummer. He doesn’t have great style or anything but he’s fairly solid. Compare him to a similar band like Russian circles or something though and it’s not even close.

^exactly. he's not necessarily bad, but i think it's pretty clear he isn't great. it fits the music but could still be much more.

I like the first two albums, have they changed much since? I could check this perhaps, perhaps not.

Yes, very different band from the first two records. Way more riff-centric and less atmospheric/post rock/metalish. City of Echoes and Forever Becoming are their best two albums to me.

I remember listening to Pelican when I discovered "Australasia" and thinking the drummer was trash. I still liked the atmosphere of the album, though. On the first track of that album he does the same sloppy drum fill over and over again. Later on I realized it basically became a meme, and there was even articles written about how bad people thought their drummer was.

Now it's 2019 and looks like things haven't changed much for this guy haha. You'd think he would have hit the practice room after all that.

Totally agree, australasia and the fire in our throats are both great records but that doesn’t make this dude anything other than distractingly plain on drums. If they do go for a riffier style it only makes sense to have a drummer who can fill out those riffs with creative playing to drive it.

he has gotten better since those days, but it's just clear he has maxed out his capabilities.

Never really got into this band beyond the odd song or two. They kinda are middling post-metal to me.

Drought is great, tho.
