JIA single feat. Ex-Periphery

2020-04-10 by OwMySnauze | 24 Comments
Progressive metal trio Jia has revealed a new single, “Drift”, featuring guest appearances by former Periphery vocalist Casey Sabol and current Animals as Leaders drummer Matt Garstka.

The band’s core, bassist Jacob Umansky (Intervals), guitarist Ivan Chopik and keyboardist Alan Hankers, have spent the last year working on new music as they plan to release new
material over the next several months.

The band on “Drift”:

“’Drift’ was one of the first songs that we wrote as a band. It reflects our diverse musical influences, ranging from metal to more popular idioms such as electronic music. That being said, we never think about style when we write, we just let the ideas flow.”

Well makes sense since he’s a studio man and has never been successful in a live band bc he actually sucks hahaha

This is pretty but it doesn't go anywhere. Kind of feels unfinished.

Kind of not a fan the flow, or lack thereof. Good musicians but just not for me.

"...we never think about style when we write, we just let the ideas flow."

Yep, that just about sums up this jumbled mess. The core musicianship is there and the mixtures of styles *could* work, but this needs a lot more focus (and time in the oven, in general) to become enjoyable - or even palatable.

butt.

Periphery had like 3 vocalists before they settled on Sotelo. There’s tracks on YouTube of Sabol doing vox on icarus lives and few other tracks I think.

Yeah TBH up until last year I kind of skipped a lot of Periphery since P1 because of Spencer's voice, so in my head Chris & Casey were still the *true* Periphery vocalists. Then I binged their material to prep for the concert and am glad they settled on Spencer. After listening to their demos so many times over, Spencer wasn't yet cemented in. I love him now though.

I had the unfortunate experience of going to the Berklee College of Music with Casey Sabol. Back then he was just KC to hide his identity. Casey Sabol or Douglas whatever he goes by these days is a total hack. The reason it takes him so long to release a song is because he is overwhelmingly anal and OCD. Casey has real mental health issues and I believe this is what has held him back from a successful music career. The last time I saw him in 2007 he was dating a porn star and was addicted to cocaine. He is real loser and a horrible singer. I had the misfortune of having to listen to him record one time at his famed NFL films studio. Casey's dad let him have access to the whole studio for a week with his top engineers. It took Casey a week to record one song and then he shelved it because it sucked. I've never seen anyone do more takes for some simple vocal and backing tracks. The drummer they hired was done in less than an hour. The truth is Casey is unprofessional and can't hack it. If he wasn't rich nobody would've heard of him. He was raised with a silver spoon in his mouth and will never know reality. I wish he would throw in the towel on music and move on to something else. Truthfully it's sad to see him keep trying to reinvent himself. I would have liked to see him carry the Sabol legacy and continue NFL films but the truth is Casey will never be the man that Steve Sabol was. Casey would only have tarnished the NFL films legacy. Casey if you read this I hope you know you're pathetic. Peace and Love!

I haven't listened to Periphery in a long long time and never thought much of them but holy shit when did they get so hard? This latest album is not what I remember them being at all.
