R.I.P. Peter Green

2020-07-25 by Necrotica | 13 Comments
Fleetwood Mac guitarist and co-founder Peter Green was reported to have passed away on 25 July 2020; he passed away peacefully in his sleep. According to family solicitors, "A further statement will be provided in the coming days".

Peter Green was no stranger to health difficulties over the course of his career, such as having to leave Fleetwood Mac in 1970 because of mental health issues and eventually being diagnosed with schizophrenia in the mid-'70s. Several artists have already given their condolences and paid tribute to Green's memory, including guitarists Peter Frampton and Bernie Marsden.

While most people know Fleetwood Mac's work solely through their mid-late '70s heyday with Stevie Nicks, it's worth noting that Green's stint with the band was very different stylistically and lyrically. The group began as a blues rock outfit, eventually culminating in a high water mark with their third record Then Play On.

Green himself was regarded as one of the best blues guitarists of all time, with B.B. King once remarking, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats".

I haven't heard any of his solo work, but apparently it's great. Now's the time to check it, I guess.

May he rest in peace. He was an absolute beast of a guitar player. One of the very few who made me cry with his playing.

There will never be a player like him again.

still blows my mind that he is as underrated as he is, despite being a founding member of one of the biggest bands of all time

aw man he is so underrated, i was an evangelical preacher preaching about Peter Green for so many years, sadly it seems many like later era Fleetwood Mac (not me) after he was gone, therefore they won't check out his live stuff or solo stuff.

years ago i used to debate about it more often with Fleetwood Mac fans, many of them hated me and were in love with Stevie Nicks.

Surprised this didn't mention that he wrote "Black Magic Woman" (most famously preformed by Santana)

Listened to the Peter Green Fleetwood Mac albums today. Excellent stuff - especially Then Play On. The Green Manalishi With the Two Pronged Crown is an incredible song. RIP.
