At the Gates Share New Song

2021-04-30 by Fernando Alves STAFF | 37 Comments
Gothenburg death metallers At the Gates shared a new song, 'Spectre Of Extinction', from their upcoming album The Nightmare Of Being, out July 2nd via Century Media Records. The album was mixed and mastered at Fascination Street Studios (Amon Amarth, Opeth, Kreator, etc.) by Jens Bogren.

'Spectre Of Extinction' can be streamed below.

Vocalist Tomas Lindberg on the album's concept: "The overall theme deals with the topic of pessimism, and I have been diving deep down in pessimistic philosophers. Trying to understand this way of looking at the world. It is not a negative album, more a gateway into new ideas for me personally, trying out different perspectives. You could call the album an introduction to pessimism as a concept, I guess. It is a very dark album, but not negative…"

The Nightmare Of Being tracklist:

1. Spectre of Extinction 4:49
2. The Paradox 4:43
3. The Nightmare of Being 3:49
4. Garden of Cyrus 4:25
5. Touched by the White Hands of Death 4:07
6. The Fall into Time 6:45
7. Cult of Salvation 4:24
8. The Abstract Enthroned 4:26
9. Cosmic Pessimism 4:31
10. Eternal Winter of Reason 3:38

this album could easily be a 3.8. Solid track. Vocals are a low point for these guys nowadays

Song is pretty cool, Tomas' age catching up with him it seems though.

I hate when they release the opener/closer as a single. Ruins the album experience

it's alright, i like that they're making it more melodic but they play it too safe and don't really full explore it. it's like they are almost forcing themselves to avoid escaping their usual keys and chord progressions

Saw these guys live twice in 2014 and 2019 and can guarantee the old man's still got it. Not sure why his vocals don't sound as strong on this one.
Song is tremendous though, strongest opener from the new set of albums. those screaming guitars coming at 3:23 legit freaked me out.
This should be good

I don’t mind the opener so much, but DAMMIT does it piss me off when they release the closer as a single. Like...what??

I'm a big At the Gates fan, and I just finished listening to the track.

Based on the comments here, I was expecting the vocals to sound terrible, but to me they honestly weren't that bad, and halfway through the song I acclimated to them. I feel that musically, this song follows what they did with most of the previous album; while it may technically be more melodically sophisticated, I feel it lacks that simple At the Gates style catchiness that really pulls me in.

The vocals sound fine. I like how this song and their last album have a more death metal presence than rather being just straight up melody.

Song is pretty cool, vocals are fine. Some of the riffs are kind of bland, though, and the opening guitar lead playing the same notes as the arpeggiated chord (or whatever they did) just didn't sound good to me

edit: A couple of listens later and I'm digging it. Not as good as their last album or their classics, but it's still pretty cool.

Agree with the comments regarding the weak vocals. Tomas had a traditionally jagged bark that sounds notably horse and dull here.

I'm still holding out hope they will one day return to that Red/Fear style of riffing even though Alf hasn't been in the band for 30 years and Anders has left too

Couldn't have said it better myself. They had some "alright" tunes on The War Within and while I appreciate that album as a stepping point back into their career, they probably should have just laid this to rest instead of retreading tired ideas.

this is sooo true for so many bands it should be enshrined on a golden plaque somewhere...

The vocals do lack a punch but they aren't terrible imo. Honestly vocals is what typically make these older death metal bands new albums so disappointing to me too but here they're tolerable for me at least. The Red in the Sky is Ours has one of my favorite vocal performances of all time and I highly recommend anyone who hasn't heard it goes back and checks it and the Gardens of Grief EP. To me those releases were this band at their peak. Never cared for the Slaughter of the Soul sound as much though and based on the ratings here I suppose I'm an odd duck there. Main riff here is pretty solid. I'll give the album a shot

Pretty sweet. Some of their best riffwork maybe ever imo but vocally Lindbergs age is creeping through in a bad way. They're not intolerable but certainly rather strained.
