The song is mediocre, but I appreciate the the sentiment. I knew Spotify artists were paid shit, but 0.002 per play? That’s crazy. 500 plays to a dollar. Why don’t more artists protest this?

While the idea deserves support... the song was utter garbage.

This is the kind of idea that comes up when you're drunk and angry, but my guess is they'll get 50 songs in and peter out.
|
| |
Oh shit nevermind it's already completed haha. That's gold.
|
| |
good idea, wish it was a cooler band doing it
|
| |
Spotify gets away with it because in most cases the record company gets all the revenue. Also, what's a fair wage per stream? If you don't like it, don't put your music on it. Use bandcamp or some other platform.
|
| |
"good idea, wish it was a cooler band doing it"
band is actually pretty cool
idk maybe i'm biased but their odd comedy music bangs
|
| |
Am I the only one who thinks this is fucking bullshit? You're not going to change anything by doing stupid shit like this...
|
| |
its obvious these guys just need the attention
otherwise why would anyone listen to this
|

well that's true
but what's your solution

every major artist/band boycott spotify

But who will I listen to then
|

|

True, all of those big guys should protest
Neil Young may have been in it for different reasons, but he did force their hand a bit
Question is, do enough of them actually give enough of a shit
|

the fact is that spotify is unfortunately still better than the only other realistic alternative, which is just piracy. if we lived in a utopian society where everyone had enough personal income that they could pay an artist £10 for their album that would be great, but unfortunately the fact is that it would just severely limit the exposure and income streams artists would receive because people are more likely to commit that amount of money towards something they already know they will like. the only other way then to seek out new music with a lower disposable income is piracy. the industry has long switched it's earnings focus from artists touring to support an album to artists putting out an album to support touring, and there's very little that can be done to change that. the perceived value of recorded music has severely deteriorated and severing the logical symptom of that problem does little. the power of the internet and file-sharing systems already started that trend, and were any of that to go it would just as quickly be replaced, as the convenience of spotify did to things like itunes and napster. there are many issues with spotify but the actual problem at hand is more to do with the industry and major labels and how they treat artists. the only way to really support artists is through going to live shows or buying physical formats and merch, which even that is being eroded through the use of record labels trying to get a cut with 360 contracts.
|
| |
What about name your price on bandcamp? If you can't afford to pay 10 quid, then just pay whatever you can afford. One pound per person is still better than two thousandths of a penny
|
| |
they saw what happened to neil right?
|
| |
on the other hand let them at it lets see how many ppl will listen to these losers to get them their 2 bucks lmaoooooo
|
| |
that's fair enough, but bandcamp has a long way to go before it reaches the convenience, catalogue and features of spotify. it also doesn't really solve the problem. spotify's number one usp is it's convenience compared to everything else. for the average listener, and not just enthusiasts like us here, when being offered an option to just download it for free how many do you think would pay for it? i think you'd be surprised how few. the perceived value of recorded music, especially in digital formats which are so easily copied and redistributed, is next to nothing. spotify allows you to just type whatever name or recommendation you've heard in and instantly have access to their whole catalogue of music, which you can download, add to all your playlists, send to all your friends and have them instantly be able to do the same.
|
| |
bruh these guys are so irrelevant i searched their name and got an app game instead
|
| |
Genuinely shocked this isn't a grind/powerviolence band [infinity]
The fact that this is amateurish as hell makes it even more punk rock.
|
| |
"If you don't like it, don't put your music on it. Use bandcamp or some other platform"
Bandcamp doesn't pay per stream. Might as well use Spotify and then support the band through merch, live shows, and actually buying their albums.

i think having your music on spotify/youtube/apple music is great exposure and you're out of your mind if you think you'll actually make money from streams
that being said, merch is realistically the only way you're going to make money in the music business unless you're on the level of dua lipa, grimes, drake, etc.
even THOSE artists still make most of their money with other investments and corporate deals
|
| |
Do artists even sell that much merch? How many people actually want a shirt or pin of their 30th favorite band?
|
| |
who?
|
| |
ye i use spot mainly as a scouting device if they're decent i'll end up buying a few songs, if good then as many albums as they're good on if rly spectacular then a shirt/hoodie etc
these guys just complaining cuz no one'll ever buy their shit lmao
|
| |
this got nothing on agoraphobic nosebleed [2]
listen to altered states, frozen corpse

At the end of the day, Spotify allows people to find bands that they wouldn't otherwise know existed. I've found several bands this way and ended up buying a concert ticket or album as a result. Bands make the majority of their money touring anyway. You're not getting rich off of Spotify, and the ones making big money only see a tiny percentage of that after the record company takes their massive cut.
|
| |
as a musician yr just expected to operate on passion and exhaustion huh
one nonstop charity gig where you mostly make money for landlords of various stripes while being told that's how you get paid
playing gigs is actually just soulcrushingly terrible and incompatible with a constructive approach to music for like half the types of people you have in the world, your fave band probably hates you for making them play live
|
| |
Unless you're in a jam band
I think those guys love playing live since it's built into their model
|
| |
I don't hate playing live but sleeping in a van and shitting in gas stations does suck a lot. Playing is the highlight of tour
|
| |
It's the actual show that artists love.
|
| |
For the love of god don't cancel Spotify, I have 3 years worth of playlists there.
(And yes, pay us more money pls).

I expected this to be more punk rock than dad-butt-rock but here we are. That sucked.

Oh yeah, it's not very good
|
| |
Spotify is operating at a net loss as it is, so how are they supposed to pay more for the artists?
I'll tell you how; charge more for users. You all know how that would go.
Root of the problem is with people who are not willing to pay more for the music, but it's easier to just blame Spotify, right?
|
| |
Being real here, without YouTube or Spotify, a lot of bands that have hundreds of thousands or even millions of streams of these platforms would be completely unknown without them. Most people that see willing to cheaply stream your music aren't willing to shell out for your album. And most of them probably wouldn't know who you were without playlists recommending you or what have you
|

Going to play some Big Black extra loud on Spotify just for the whinging contingent.
Get over it, labels pay Jack and Shit too, let's see you lot ditch your shit colored pressed only in twenty editions vinyl, hrm? https://media.tenor.com/images/9fe87a603001532f78706ff6aeb096b4/tenor.gif
