New Porcupine Tree Single

2022-03-09 by Fernando Alves STAFF | 24 Comments
Porcupine Tree shared a new single, 'Of The New Day', from the band's forthcoming eleventh album Closure/Continuation, out June 24th 2022. The official lyric video can be seen below.

Steven Wilson comments: "Of the New Day is a song of rebirth, emerging from darkness. It sounds deceptively simple, a recognisably atypical Porcupine Tree ballad. That is until you realise that the length of the bars is constantly changing, flipping between bars of regular 4/4 time to 3/4, to 5/4 to 6/4, 11/4, so that the track never settles into any steady time. It's what PT can sometimes do really well, come up with a basic idea that's almost intellectual or mathematical, but carry it off in a way that sounds completely natural and accessible."

Tracklist:
1. Harridan
2. Of The New Day
3. Rats Return
4. Dignity
5. Herd Culling
6. Walk The Plank
7. Chimera's Wreck

This actually sounds more like a PT song instead of a Steven Wilson solo one like the other singles. Still none have really excited me, so I hope the setlist for the live shows don't consist of too many songs from the new album

Song was fine, sounds like it could have been on Lightbulb Sun.

Not sure if I'll buy the album, but I'll give it a listen and try to catch the band live.

My most anticipated album of the year. Both songs bode well for me. Then again I thought The Incident was one of the best things this band did so what do I know.

His sense of intertwining timbre/harmony is really special - always feels like a bit ear candy.

Never been into PT, but this sounds Steven Wilson as ever...nothin wrong with that

Both songs are really good. Am planning on catching that tour when they come to Boston, still so cool that they reunited like this.
My most anticipated album of the year. [2]

Welp, Wilson's recognizably boastful af comment aside, actually really digging this song; agreed with the Lightbulb Sun vibe, cautiously looking forward to this album.

Wilson is a genius with writing instrumental melodies, general songcraft, and production but suffers from consistent foot-in-mouth syndrome and some embarrassing lyrics.

SW's preface write-ups of his own music have gotten more... heavy-handed over the years for sure. "This song is simple... until it's not!" Like, ok.

Regardless, love the guy. Song rules. Missed this sound

It's a great PPT track, not sure if it's a Lightbulb Sun callback though, no Colin Edwin makes me still super confused on tracks like this where he'd have opportunities to shine, and he made that album super memorable with his fat bass lines. Maybe closer to In Absentia? In any case, both work for me, Harridan still sounds awkward to me because of the other guy's bass sound that's really different from Edwin's (no idea who it even is on the bass for them nowadays)

As far as I know they don't have an official bassist currently, so it could have been Steven or a session artist on the recording here.

Yeah I guess In Absentia or probably The Incident is a more accurate sound here, especially the latter cause this is a follow up to that.

This is pretty solid, I sort of expected this from them during the reunion. I would like to see some longer songs get thrown in the mix too, and judging by how few tracks there are on this release I might get my wish

I don’t think this is new songs per se is it? It’s all incident era stuff cobbled together and the band putting on a few shows. Hope I’m wrong though.

Neither song reminds me of The Incident tbh, they're good songs...

It's probably just some ideas from The Incident sessions realised into songs and a bunch of new stuff

@FadedSun yeah I’m in the Boston area. The tix are expensive tho.. maybe cause it’s in a new venue.
Btw I just found out that Tony Levin is not only American, but was born in Boston! That means when I saw King Crimson here for my birthday a few years ago, he was in his hometown which is cool.
