I'd be surprised if this is any good. I don't think Muse have the musical ability to do more than their catchy stadion-rock numbers. But I'm always open for a positive surprise.

they used to have (Origin of Symmetry's a pretty good example in parts, as is Absolution), but they've been pandering to the pop crowd of late, so it's really one of two ways this can go. really good, or horribly bad
|
| |
A fifteen minute symphony?
And Muse are pretty talented technically.
|
| |
Black Holes and Revelations was the result.
Oh no, another great album like Black Holes! What will we do?
|
| |
Black holes was average. and before anyone casts up my review of it. I was more or less obsessed with them then.
|
| |
And Muse are pretty talented technically.
I don't doubt that, but it's just that the songs all are rather similar at their core - which didn't bother me as much on Origin of Symmetry, cause it was just so impressively powerful and fresh, but later on it became a really big problem. I just don't think they're able to write a decent orchestral piece, I guess it would just sound like another Muse song with string sections instead of guitars.

It is more important for us to make the best album we have made to date Doubt it.
|
| |
The only really good songs on Black Holes... were Starlight and Knights of Cydonia, but the rest were still good. It's by no means a bad album, maybe ever so slightly better than Absolution (which I consider to be quite boring) though nowhere near on the level of Origin Of Symmetry. I'm expecting something around the same for their next album, though they've got me interested now with the 15-minute epic idea.

I don't see why people are hating on BHAR so much granted I think the songs were hit or miss, but when one of their best songs is on it: "Map Of The Problematique", and I'm glad Bellamy's is attempting to score the orchestral himself, like Jonny Greenwood
|
| |
BHAR was a great album hands-down.
|
| |
meh...
|
| |
BHaR sucked
and so will this pretentious pseudo-symphony
|
| |
their last album only had a few good songs. i doubt their next one will be on par with the brilliance of OoS and Absolution

Hope the lyrics improve this time round. A Soldier's Poem was just terrible.
|

I still love Muse after all this time, and I think Bellamy has the talent to put something decent together in that symphony. Probably won't be amazing though.
|
| |
I'm glad Bellamy's is attempting to score the orchestral himself, like Jonny Greenwood
the difference is that Jonny Greenwood is a great, multi-talented musician whereas Bellamy is not much more than a cool frontman.
|
| |
Well I thought BHaR was their best and easily most consistent album to date, so I'm definitely excited for something new. And considering his abilities with his voice, the guitar and the piano I don't understand how Matt Bellamy isn't a very multi-talented musician.

BHaR sucked
Not at all, Muse experimented and diversified their sound even more on BHaR, and it has some of their best songs.
The only really good songs on Black Holes... were Starlight and Knights of Cydonia
Starlight was one of the weakest imo. Take A Bow, Assassin, City Of Delusion and Knights Of Cydonia were the best.
Soldier's Poem was just terrible.
I thought so too, but after many listens the absolute beauty of the song will be revealed.
the songs all are rather similar at their core
I kind of agree, but there definitely are exceptions, some songs in the Muse catalog are quite unique.
this 15 minutes symphony is intriguing, but its nothing Muse has tried before. I'm hoping for the best. And they should definitely take their time, I'd rather wait 5 years for a terrific album then a few months for crap. This Message Edited On 11.23.08

oh yeah, the music itself is great, but the lyrics are just...so bad...
|

Simple? yes. Unimaginative? maybe, but the lyrics strike a chord with me because they are presented so wonderfully in the layered vocals.
|
| |
map of the problematique was awesome, rest of album fairly meh.
15 minute orchestral piece sounds interesting...
|
| |
i just have a hard time connecting with such ininspired lyrics..."throw it all away" etc
|
| |
This should be pretty cool, I like most of what Muse have put out.
|
| |
The vocals from Black Holes are terrible I hope they really improve.

So all in all, album number 5 has high prospects. However, so did album number 4 round about this time in the process, and Black Holes and Revelations was the result.
Yeah, and it was a good album.
I think the next album will be even better, to be honest. Muse has a much broader sound now, and they should be more comfortable with it on this release.
also, muse lyrics usually arn't amazing, just sometimes; but it's definately more about the way matt vocalises them that makes it good.

BHAR was the first muse album and i was blown away. It is probably my favorite just above OOS simply because that album trailed off towards the end and feels a bit top heavy.
|
| |
I, honestly, like their harder stuff the most, but a symphony sounds intriguing. Hopefully it doesn't implode on them...

I first got into Muse via BHAR, and worked my way backwards. While there are albums (Showiz, OoS) that surpass others, not one is really poor. I can understand people's gripes with BHAR, and even Absolution, but you never know; this album might break the mould that the band are setting. We shouldn't make assessments until the album is released. If you're under the impression that it's poor before listening to it, you might underrate the album in the end, and of course, the opposite can occur too. So just stay on the fence, and wait for the finished product to tip you over one side of it.
On a side note, I'd prefer a single similar to Dead Star, just to push them back away from the mainstream.
