Refused – The Shape Of Punk To Come

Ah, Refused, the political band with a future that had no future, the better “hardcore” band out there. The Refused have a mix with their music, with some violins and trumpets and some samples involved. The instruments aren’t very technical (guitars tuned to drop-D ect.) but what the band contribute to the music is the main thing. The lyric booklet is an interesting read with a lot of political hoo-ha. This album is essential to all hardcore fans out there.

Quote:
Refused Are ******* Dead that’s what the answering machine said, looks like this is it!!! They talked one to many **** about the upper-class and the government, did you hear what those ******* said in some fanzine someone else read. I heard they are a bunch of spoiled little rich kids who need to get their asses kicked.
The single song that most people know is the infamous New Noise. Starts off with a quiet palm-muted riff and then the synths come in and does this awesome beat. And then it goes mental when Dennis shouts “Can I scream!” Dennis has some quiet singing with the first riff behind his voice. The song is awesome in everyway and Dennis is a brilliant screamer. There is a breakdown, then….mayhem!!! Listen to this song, it is brilliant. 5/5

Quote:
”To sing you must first open your mouth. You must have a pair of lungs and a little knowledge in music. It is not necessary to have an accordion or a guitar. The essential thing is that I want to sing and this is the song I’m singing” –H. Miller
This is the quote Dennis says in the first few lines of Protest Song ’68. The song starts with a drum beat thing and Dennis does the usual screaming. During the verses, Dennis quietly sings, almost talking-like (like in New Noise) The lyrics are obviously the Summer of ’68. It has a breakdown again which sounds like something in an elevator. Goes to a screaming part again with a small guitar riff. The background music fades away and just has the small guitar riff. Enters that drum beat again for ten seconds till end. 4/5

Quote:
Beyond ability and control we could be weekend lovers. Steal a sentence and make a catch phrase parole for our revolution. Whispered all across the street about the new cool call. Or screamed at your face like a scabs payroll. Faces like angels, licking our fingertips. We don’t have the patience to deal with it.
The Refused are ******* Dead has a cool main hook which will stay in your head ages after you listen to it. The end verse is so awesome and is brilliantly sung. The drums are pounding in this song and is a strong song throughout. Definitely a recommended track. 4.5/5

Awesome lyric:
”An naďve young secret for the new romantics. We express ourselves in loud and fashionable ways.”

Quote:
Hey baby, you never felt so good. Freedom through the stereo and you wish you could take a bite, do a dance and get lost on a crusade. Jump on this soul train with destination unknown.
The Shape of Punk to Come is the album name, but also a song on the album and one of the best. It feels like a typical “hardcore song.” The guitars are perfect, the drumming is top-notch, the vocals are sweet and it is a perfect all-rounder track. It has a noise “guitar solo” and it ends at 5:06. 5/5

Their, download or something the songs I have listed as they are the better tracks on the album. The album is sweet and brilliant. If only they never broke up, I think it was political views how they broke up. Shame, they were a great band with a lot of potential.

The Refused have inspired a whole host of bands (Circle Takes The Square comes to mind.) The way they fuse all the instruments adds up to intense listening and you’ll have the songs in your head all the time and you’ll never get bored of them which makes this album a great one. Buy it now, you’re hardcore collection won’t be complete without it.

Nice review. But somewhat I ad the feeling you could not really decide what to go for, overall or track-by-track. Still, nice one! :thumb:

Good Review. Classic Album, originally I couldn't get into it but it grows on you like an erection at a christian boy's school.

Nice review. I normally try to be conservative with ratings, but 5/5 for this.

Totally agreed. The first 4 times I listened I thought it was terrible but I've grown to love it.

Fanf*ckingtastic record. Probably my favorite album ever, really... at least tied with Relationship Of Command, The Illusion Of Safety, and No Control... (maybe The Fall Of Troy's self-titled too). From the assault of Worms Of The Senses to Liberation Frequency's crazy dynamics to the post-hardcore jazz orgasm of The Deadly Rhythm all the way to Apollo Programme... good friggin' God this album power-owns every piece of music to ever call themselves hardcore, and punk, and perhaps in modern music. Absolute genious, 10/5 and that's my word. This Message Edited On 03.04.06

I think it is a good thing they broke up, because can you imagine them topping an album like this?
