OK this is the 4th full lenght album from nfg. They have come a long way from the hometown of Coral Springs FL. This album is different from the rest as they experiment with new sounds as they have their fastest and slowest songs on this album. THis is track by track review.
Intro(5/5)--This is one of the best songs they have ever written. 45 seconds of pure energy. Anyone who hears this song will wanna get up and jump around. Also a good lyrical idea as it is about posers and sellouts. Their fastest song ever.
All Downhill From Here(4/5)--Here it is the song the mtv generation knows. Even after heaing it many times it never gets old. Great guitar and drums throughout. Great song, well written and a concert staple for them.
This Disaster(3.5/5)—Awesome intro very metal sounding riff. Very good guitar in choruses. Awesome song as it expands what genres they can play. And that drum fill before the third chorus is pure genious.
Truth of My Youth(5/5)—This is the best song on the album. From the opening riff to the last note it is full of energy. A good song that is about lost memories of hometown after touring. Usually the opener or 2nd song of concerts. This is nfg at their best.
I Don’t Wanna Know(2/5)—The first time you hear this song you say “what the hell is this crap” After hearing it a few times you get the idea. This was the 3rd single but not a smart choice in my opinion as it opened new doors for being called sellouts. The slowest most mellow song from them.
Your Biggest Mistake(2.5/5)—Good song to follow the ballad, great guitar riff in the intro. Another high energy fast paced song and the band shows they can write great lyrics that are not just about girls.
Doubtfull(2/5)—Pretty good opening riff. Kind of a boring song after a few listens but smart use of choir in chorus. Good lyrical idea but could have been a better song.
Failures Not Flattering(3/5)—The second single and a great song with an 80s throwback feel to it. You gotta love the keyboard riff as it is pure energy. A great live song which gets the audience jumping. The one drawback if any is that on the cd recording Jordans voice is a little too high for my taste.
Over the Head, Below The Knees(4/5)—An odd song as it is dark and moody which was not expected. Could be considered a filler but its still a well written song.
Ending In Tragedy(3/5)—Another unusual nfg song but this time it works perfectly. Starts off with a Broken Sound feel, slow and jazzy, but the chorus and bridge are hard hitting and just sound cool.
At Least Im Known For Something(4/5)—What is this a metal song from nfg? A very metal inspired guitar riff with insane drumming from cyrus. And no that is not a double bass pedal. I have seen this song played live twice and he doesn’t use one which is crazy.
Great song, as again it shows the different influences and genres the band can play.
I’d Kill To Fall Asleep(3/5)—Awesome and unuasual opening drum beat from cyrus. Good lyrics that everyone can relate to lying in bed at night. The chorus of “I’d kill to fall asleep” is a little boring but overall a good song. I like the alarm clock in the interlude, cool idea and fits well.
No News Is Good News(4/5)—Not a single but a well know song as it was on rock against bush Vol. 1. Good song about the bad effects of advertising. Cool opening riff inspired by ska-ish sounds. Great song one of my favorites off the album.
Who Am I?(4.5/5)—NFG finds a way to come up with the best album enders(ballad for the lost romantics, the goodbye song, story so far). This follows suit. Kind of a wimpy piano in the beginning(don’t say itll stay this way forever) but picks up with awesome lyrics that cant be described they just fit the song perfectly. Cool mini guitar solo at the end. An awesome album ender.
Conclusion-many people bash nfg cuz they say they are trying to be punk. In the special features of this disaster:live in London, guitarist Chad Gilbert says that they are just five guys playing the music they love and don’t fit into one category. This is true as they expand their sound greatly.
