STEP ONE:
“The Worst thing about it / is what [we’ll] become,” because we never know “Whose Blues” will arise with such a potent cocktail on hand. It’s important to keep this in mind before we start thinking about serving up bluesy guitar licks and delicate vocal melodies. Blasting horns in the distance may sound the warning, so just be prepared with a set plan for a comedown, because the highs might be dizzying.
STEP TWO:
Now that we have the formalities out of the way, “What’ll We Do?” Perhaps we should start by throwing some soulful ballads into the mix. Make sure to stir properly. Adjust amounts until you reach desired effect. You might need to add some forlorn with a hint of “Born Together” and for sweetness, try adding some syrupy strings with “Having It All”. Once you’re content, we can move on to step three.
STEP THREE:
Now that we have our soulful bass work figured out, we can move on to the rest of this horn punch. The best place to start is by adding a dash of “I’ve Changed My Number”, but if that R&B horn section is a tad too strong for you, try to the toned down “Greyhound Bus Station”, but be warned, that vocal section has been known for its odd warble. If horns are not necessarily your ideal ingredient, substitute for some flavourful piano lines from your friend Azita Youssefi, you might just be “Blown Away”.
STEP FOUR:
It’s very important that you mix this appropriately and steadily. Luckily the beat of Morris Jennings is as strong as his jazz credentials imply, and he makes everything click the way it should be. For further instruction, contact Steve Albini. He’s been known to be the best mixer of this cocktail to date.
STEP FIVE:
Serve chilled and enjoy.
WARNING: If you start to experience strange colours during the opening half of the psychedelic “Fed”, don’t fret. Just wait it out and start it all again from the beginning.
