The most recent wave of pop-punk bands has proved to be an near-fruitless bunch. Fall Out Boy, though easily grouped with the rest of the rather poor bands, have their own unique style and approach to their music. Although the songs are all full of power-chords and whatnot, their lyrics have always seemed to be the main focus, along with the omnipresent melodies.
They're even pretty cute.
Ever since 2001, Fall Out Boy, whose members were apart of some of the Chicago hardcore scene, have kept the tradition of the upbeat-sound/downbeat-lyrics formula that the Ramones perfected so many years ago. Pete Wentz writes with a biting cleverness that runs throughout most of the album, while Patrick Stump adds the sugar, spice, and everything nice to the songs, with his unique, warbling voice. Listen to the excellent "Sugar, We're Goin' Down" for evidence of this. The lyrics in several tracks prove to be more funny than you might expect, especially the wrist-slitting sarcasm and in-joke filled opener "Our Lawyer Made Us Change The Name Of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued," which sets up the basic mood for most of the album. Even the titles of the songs are clever, like "Champagne for My Friends, Real Pain For My Sham Friends" and "7 Minutes in Heaven (Atavan Halen)," with it's obvious Van Halen reference in the title, and the Van Halenesque riff throughout the song (it's also supposedly imsonia medication that Pete takes). The music itslef on From Under the Cork Tree is a heavy dose of thick power chords and tight drumming, though nothing particularly inventive or new. Every now and then, the band takes an odd direction in the music that you may not expect from a pop-punk band (Check out the hardcore parody in "I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy And All That I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me") that keep interest. The songs are full of energy, despite a few songs that lack the energy and passion that many of the songs here have. "XO" sounds vaguely similar to My Chemical Romance's "Helena" in it's structure. The rest of the album is just a fun, catchy, hook-laden pop-punk album with some wits and cathartic elements that proves to be a fairly rewarding listen.

Short and sweet, and with a good point.
I'd give this one a close score of 3.5/5 because I'll agree it lacked material the album was clearly aiming for.
Best song on here is track number one, which im definitely not writing out.

I like these guys but I can't listen to them all the time anymore, but occasionally I will.
They've got to have one of the worst screams I've ever heard though :P.

dude how do u compare fallout boy to the ramones? the ramones were the first american punk band and did not write all their songs about girls. in fact on their first cd only 2 songs were about gilrs in the emo sense(i wanna be your boyfriend, i dont wanna walk around with you). fboy sounds nothing like the ramones and they will never be what the ramones were and still are

Really good review very good job.I haven't listened to the entire CD.I came here in hopes of finding how the CD is and you helped quite a bit.I've heard 2 songs I think and I agree.The songs are very lyrically driven as far as I heard.I think that the album sounds very provocative and interesting in some sense.I think that they may not make it for that long in this particular way.And they probably won't be a classic band that'd be one of Spin Magazine's pride and joys.They probably will never be a Green Day or a Nirvana or ACDC but they will probably stay popular within the next few years.After that I do wonder where they will be.The only way I think they will become a clasic band is if they change their style and mature their music a little.I'm pretty sure they will but if they don't soon enough their audience will grow up and then they will fall.Hopefully they will get the "second-album-maturity"that so many bands made up of boys get.
