Review Summary: Bravestation is an underground band with a lot of talent and some great potential. With the 2010 EP, they give us five excellently crafted pop-rock songs.

Bravestation is a Toronto four-piece that plays with a new wave, indie pop styling. The band’s talent is evident, and has lead to widespread praise throughout the web. While they remain unsigned, that has not stopped them from releasing two EPs (this is the second) and having an ever-growing fan base.

As I have stated, Bravestation has unmistakable talent. The music is all incredibly cohesive and well put together, creating upbeat grooves with great pop sensibility. A good amount of experimentation is present, with each track introducing a new direction that Bravestation is willing to take (and excel at).

Every member brings quality work to the EP. The vocals are strong thoughout, matching the music perfectly. I find them favorably comparable to Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade (though a bit higher). Though contributing greatly to every track, they never take complete control, letting the music retain a more open feel. The backing vocals are also utilized well, creating some excellent harmonies.

The keys oh here are great, often layering everything with their high, airy tones throughout, and are matched by intricate guitar work. The bass is powerful in every song, creating a vibrating rhythm that sounds fantastic. The way it is used to kick off the pulsing “Their Calling” is especially satisfying.

Possibly my favorite parts of the EP are the ever-present tapping drums and cymbals. When they create tension in the enrapturing opener “White Wolves” and propel “Clock & Spears,” they may not demand attention, but they deserve much appreciation.

Each of the five tracks has value, from the blues/smooth jazz tinges on “Outlines of Everyone” to the bouncy finale “Color Us With Youth.” I believe Bravestation’s 2010 EP will actually prove to be one of the best EPs I hear this year, with five great, diverse tracks that would be considered some of the better ones on any full length. These guys are definitely worth your time, and with this EP streaming on their myspace and two tracks available on their bandcamp, there really isn’t a good reason not to check them out.

If anybody is interested, their myspace is myspace.com/bravestation and the bandcamp is bravestationtn.bandcamp.com. It's good stuff, at least give White Wolves a listen.
