The Devil Wears Prada has always been a controversial band, whether it be the name of the band (there’s a movie of the same name), the silly song titles that usually have nothing to do with the subject of the songs, or the sound of the band itself that often borderlines a parody of the screamo or metalcore scene, and then finally there’s the bands religious beliefs that is the subject matter for most of their songs (although it doesn’t matter ‘cause Mike Hranicas growls and screams are unintelligible usually). With Zombies EP the band has finally released something that allows the music to speak for itself instead of letting other factors get in the way, and, in the end, it’s probably the best release of the bands career thus far.

On Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord, the band’s debut, they displayed a heavy sound that, at its foundation, was metalcore but incorporated other elements of music and influences that at times sounded awkward or messy and the religious based lyrics probably drove some people away, that is if they actually read the lyrics. With the follow-up, Plagues, the band made very few changes and followed the same formula but even sillier than the previous effort. After two albums of silly screamo/metalcore it was time for the band to evolve some and they did that with their third album, With Roots Above and Branches Below, which showed the band leaning more towards a metalcore sound with less clean singing from guitarist, Jeremy DePoyester, and heavier instrumentation. Even though it was an improvement it still had silly, random, often stupid, song titles and moments of immaturity that had hurt their past releases. On Zombies, the concept is probably sillier than anything they’ve ever done, but it’s the most mature work the band has ever released, with its crushing guitars, brain pounding drums, and sick vocals that will probably scare some people. Throughout the five songs the band maintains their focus and creates a cohesive album that tells the story of a zombie apocalypse, making it the first album by the band that doesn’t deal with religious lyrics, the band also drops the random song titles which is sure to please most people. The band still maintains its signature sound, which is best summarized by a blend of screamo, metalcore, and death metal with melodic sung passages that sound average at best but does give the sound some texture, but the band also gets even heavier by adding elements of speed and thrash metal, which the band admitted by calling it the “fastest music they’ve ever written” and they even admitted that it draws influence from bands like Slayer and Hatebreed.

What makes Zombie so great is the fact that it’s an improvement on everything the band has ever done, Mike Hranica has always been a great vocalist but here he’s out of this world, Jeremy DePoyesters clean vocals aren’t annoying like they’ve had then tendency to be in the past, and the music sounds as heavy as ever, which leads one to hope that the next album will be just as good if not better. Zombies is an essential release for any fan of the band but for anybody looking to get into the band, here is a great place to start.

I think that the departure from the christian-tuned positive-based message might be the slight improvement that this album has over the others, but then again the other two are among my favorite albums of the now (yeah, flame me). How did you hear this? I thought it was supposed to be released digitally tomorrow?

holy shit, i actually liked this. metalcore is making a comeback with as i lay dying coming out with a heavier album, all that remain's new single sounds like some of their old stuff, beneath the sky got heavier (although its a fucking terrible album, but at least theyre going in the right direction), and...well actually thats it. hopefully the bands stop trying that radio friendly bullshit and get back to smashing skulls.

um, no. metalcoar never smashed any skulls. if anything they got their skulls smashed by ALL other music not even just by the vast legions of true metal that are far far superior.

ps metalcoar sucks now and it always has sucked. it always will suck until trendy hipsters decide some other shit type of music is cool and metalcoar finally dies along with hardcoar and emocoar and deathcoar and blackcoar which doesnt even exist yet but probably soon will.

Your spelling of 'coar' shows me how knowledgeable you are about the 'metalcoar' genre and it's hipsters-only policies.

Look at your comment, now back to mine. Now back at your comment now back to mine. Sadly it isn't mine, but if you stopped trolling and started posting legitimate comments it could look like mine. Look down, back up, where are you? You're scrolling through comments, writing the comment your comment could look like. What did you post? Back at mine, it's a reply saying something you want to hear. Look again the reply is now diamonds. Anything is possible when you think before you post. I'm on a troll.

You have slightly sparked my interest with the positive review. Sounds hopeful for them after all. I will have to see for myself later. I'm sort of glad they matured and changed a little. Cool album cover too

haha these kids that come on here and bitch about metalcore are a joke. yeah, theres a lot of metalcore and deathcore bands out there that suck because of how commercialized the whole thing got, but theyre just idiots for blocking out the whole genre and then critisizing the people who listen to it.

guess what. go fuck yourselves. i listen to death metal, black metal, good metalcore, and good deathcore. suck my dick.
