Review Summary: "I see a mansard roof through the trees"

What do you get if you mix Peter Gabriel with a bunch of new yorkers? Vampire Weekend. And this is their debut.

Before you ask me, despite the name, they aren't a goth band. Instead they were named after the student film made by singer/guitarist Ezra Koenig in his college years. Their combination of african music and danceable indie is really great, as the pairing of the two aren't so common. What we get is an album which barely clocks in at over 30 minutes as a whole. And i don't like it just for it's singles.

I mean, the singles were great; well picked out, but the real highlights are in songs like Campus, One and Walcott. The Kids Don't Stand A Chance is a beautiful song, and the orchestra suits in well. M79 too, about a bus journey through Cape Cod. Speaking of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa is a danceable number. A-Punk is a danceable, catchy song, Oxford Comma even educated me with it's use of English explanation and Mansard Roof taking us to French architect.

To me, though there was too much hype, though not the band's fault, this is a great album. Seeing them was a treat too, with an orchestra. Contra? Well i'll leave that to another time. In the meantime put on your best shoes and get down to enjoyable music!

Although Vampire Weekend can't quite measure up to the hype enveloping their self-titled debut - aft...

if you want criticism, this review could really use a cleanup. capitalization, not using sentence fragments, putting quotes around song titles, these things would all make the review read nicer.

also, you may want to flesh out your ideas much more. if this really is a classic to you, be sure to tell us why and how, try to analyze more.

I would also recommend reading reviews on Sputnik more, this'll give you a better idea of what's common/expected.

Hope that helps!

Yeah Sea beat me to it, this is far too short for a 5 star review. Why is this record worthy of such a high accolade? What is it about the music that makes this album so appealing to you? back this up by mentioning specific examples (i.e. tracks). What/Who influenced the band and how? Is this particularly noteable in a particular track? Merely saying that a song is danceable isn't really going to cut it I'm afraid. You have potential, but you really need to have a long listen to the album, and spend a lot more time putting your ideas to paper. Imagine you have never heard the album before and you want to know what it sounds like (or indeed who it sounds like) before sampling it for the first time.

(I'm not criticizing the rating persay, just saying that for such a rating (which is a massive deal by the way, most new users don't quite understand what an accolade a 5 is) the review needs to be super water-tight.)

this album does need a 5-star review but i agree with seaanemone (who hates me for some reason). this review is kind of short and doesn't explain much.

You don't back up a 5 rating at all. Your review should be much longer and more detailed, especially for a 5. Its also pretty hard to read. Make sure you have coherent sentences and all that.

On another note, when I first heard the name Vampire Weekend, I thought it was a goth band too.

I'm sorry, but this review is so repetitive and bland. For a Classic 5 star review, there has to be some analyzation at least, not just vague descriptions of the songs.

you could go take a massive shit in the bathroom, as your expression of their musical quality, while you wait for the arcade fire to play.

i usually hate having to listen to all the shitty bands to hear the few good ones..

This band is considered indie? It's some of the most mainstream music I've ever heard tbh. Still can't hate this album

cause 'Cousins' and 'Diplomat's Son' are incredibly catchy

^ oh shit wrong album lol
