Review Summary: mad elephant means good vibes
Dumbo Gets Mad is a psychedelic rock solo project out of Northern Italy, and with
Elephants At The Door DGM present their debut LP. Sprawling sounds of cheap synthesizers instantly manage to project pictures of summer into your head and make you feel the sun on your skin, even though its February and the sun doesn't even shine. Or does it? Can't tell sitting in the basement trying to write a review on this album, but listening to songs like
Eclectic Prawn or
Marmelade Kids sure make me believe it does. Right here in my basement room.
It would be easy to bring up a whole truckload of metaphors to describe the songs of this album, but I would rather you listen to the album yourself instead of reading the thoughts I can think of listening to this record - it's totally and absolutely free. That is, if you consider 'paying' with a tweet on twitter or a post on facebook for the download being free. And isn't that a nice idea? You pay for the album by spreading the word. With that in mind, I guess I earned myself a vinyl copy of the record. Of course it's utterly arrogant and demanding to say so, but still. (Find a link to the free download in the comments section)
In songs like
Plumy Tale and
Why Try? (which somehow strangely reminds me of the Miami Vice Theme) Dumbo Gets Mad manage to picture this special kind of feel-good atmosphere in a way only some very few recent artists can. Think
Grizzly Bear, but more uplifting. Think
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, but less hippie. Basically think
The Beach Boys. And why do all those psychedelic artists wear strange clothes?
