Review Summary: An Underratted, brilliant Record
Green Day has always been one of my favourite bands but for a long time i ignored this records existence due to the bad reputation it had gained amongst many Green Day's fans who dismissed it as being "Too Pop". While i can't argue that this isn't Green Day's most pop sounding record because it is by far, i was pleasantly surprised when i finally gave this record a chance and found out that it was full of fun, catchy songs. There are a few songs that seem like filler but when this Record is good, it's great.
1) Warning - The Record starts off with the title track "Warning" which is one of the two songs i had heard off this record prior too listening to it all the way through (the other being Minority) and it is a good opener to this record, it may be a bit too pop for some, but when taken for what it is, it's a good song to open a great record. [3.5/5]
2) Blood, Sex and Booze - This track brings a smile to my face evertime i hear it, the riffs are catchy, Billie's execution of the enjoyably silly lyrics is spot on, and it's just fun to listen to. Not much else to say about it, it's just an awesome song. [4/5]
3) Church On Sunday - Like Warning, if you take this song for what it is, it's easy to enjoy it, it has a very catchy chorus and good use simple guitar riffs. overall, another fun, catchy song [3.5/5]
4) Fashion Victim. Not a whole lot to say about this one, another catchy song, may be a little too similar too a couple of Green Days other songs, but it certainly shouldn't be skipped [3.5/5]
5) Castaway - Nothing short of fantastic, this is one of the highlights of the record, the song is incredbly catchy, has great riffs, and is just a complete joy to listen to. The Lyrics are a less straitfoward than the previous songs which is a good thing. The Guitar solo is short but very sweet, and mike dirnts bass playing on this track is greatness. Overall, an Awesome song [5/5]
6) Misery - And here we go, this song is just brilliant, you'de be hard pressed to find a better song in all of Green Days catalogue or anywhere in most of modern music. the amount of different layers of sound doing different things is astounding and all these different layers come together perfectly. From the clean electric guitar, to the accordian, to the horns, to the Distorted electric guitar chugging along in the background and more, this song gets it all right. Billie even managed to get a mandolin solo in there. overall, i can't say enough goodthings about this track [5/5]
7) Deatbeat Holiday - coming off of two fantastic songs, this is a bit of a dissapointment and in my opinion is the low point of the album, that's not too say it's bad, it's just not up there with the rest of the record [3/5]
8) Hold On - This track is fun, catchy, and just overall very good to bring the record back up after deadbeat holiday [4/5}
9) Jackass - i've had a love hate relationship with this track, but at the moment it's love. It's got a rhythm that is very catchy and the lyrics perfectly summarise a few people i know. [4/5]
10) Waiting - The Lyrics are a little "Meh" but the instrumentation is very good, with great drumming from Tre Cool (As always), very enjoyable rhythms and a melody that worked perfectly for the Guitar Solo. [4.5/5]
11) Minority - The other song i heard prior to hearing the record, starts off with a great acoustic guitar arppegiated riff and launches into one of Green Days best. With Lyrics all about being your own person, great riffs and incredibly catchy vocal melodies. [5/5]
12) Macy's Day Parade - A Great way to end a great record, this track is much slower in both tempo and pace than the others but still very satisfying. A simple drum beat, sinister sounding strings and an acoutic guiar make for another awesome song [4/5]
