Review Summary: Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is Nothing Special, but Neither is Anything Else on the Radio
Now, let me be the first person in the world to say Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded isn't that bad of an album. It's alot better than most. It is a little disappointing though what happens after ten tracks and that's that the album goes from being Nicki Minaj's second album to being mindless, endless indulgence.
It just keeps going whether you want it to or not, even if the songs start blending together and start to lose its luster.
Like everyone says, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is practically cut in half. One half is rap, the other is pop. Actually I had to look again 'cause I thought the first 5 were rap and the rest of the 19 tracks were pop, but it quite literally is cut in half. With 19 tracks, the 10th track, Starships is the overwhelming change of pace from rap to pop that everyone is talking about.
Everyone is saying Roman Reloaded is Minaj selling out, but I don't see how when Pink Friday was one of the most successful pop albums of 2010. Perhaps it's because Minaj was selling a sort of pop/rap hybrid on that album. On Roman Reloaded she goes all the way to pop, singing songs that Katy Perry and her mother could sing. But also, Roman Reloaded features Minaj's darkest, most overt rap songs since the mixtape that shot her to stardom in the first place.
Overall, Roman Reloaded is nothing special, But neither is 95% of the albums that MTV stands behind anyway.
Songs to take a special look at:
Roman Holiday: The most interesting track to me. I've never heard anything quite like this track. It sounds like some type of opener to a Broadway musical, or the finale. The chorus does atleast. The rest is rap.
I Am Your Leader: "I am your Leader, yes I am your leader. You not a believa. Suck a big dick." Anything with a hook like that is awesome.
Beez in the Trap: Another awesome rap song.
Starships: This starts off horribly, but as it goes it gets better. Its also the most sonically pleasing in headphones.
Whip It: My favorite pop track. It reminds me partly of Rihanna or Britney Spears. It's a cute song about having sex. Woo
