Review Summary: "Bon Iver, Bon Iver" is a beautiful masterpiece, full of wonderful melodies and well-crafted lyrics.

"The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present. The icicles have dropped, rising up again as grass."

For starters, I LOVE Bon Iver's music. It always makes me relaxed, and some of his songs even put me in a good mood. His new album is VERY different compared to his acoustic debut "For Emma, Forever Ago". Synthesizers, brass instruments, piano, saxophones, drums, and many other instruments are included on the album. The tracks have a brighter sound compared to the melancholy of his debut.

The melodies of the album are beautiful, some of the best I've heard in recent years. The layers of sounds gives each track a rich, full sound that adds to the beauty of the melodies. Justin's vocals are, like on "For Emma", mostly falsetto, but have less pain and sadness in them. The instrumentation of the album is unique, but magnificent. The tracks are much more diverse than on "For Emma", and the album never sounds repetitive.

Justin's lyrics are, of course, very poetic. Metaphors are common, and symbols are used often as well.

The only issue I have is that there are some instances where I can't understand what Justin is singing. Primarily in "Beth/Rest". However, this is usually due to either the music, or is the case of "Beth/Rest", the use of vocal effects.

All-in-all, "Bon Iver, Bon Iver" is a masterpiece. I would recommend this to everyone, especially indie fans. 4.5/5

There are much more things to talk about when reviewing Bon Iver, not a bad review per se, but try to
describe much more.

That "Recap" is not nescesary, you can edit your review and sum those pros and cons in one short
paragraph. Also, when you say "abstract" it implies something is compositionally or lyrically
challenging, I can't see how broken relationships, nature, reflections & life stories are "abstract"
subjects, even if they are dressed up and poetic they remain as "personal lyrics" and that term fits
better. Not gonna pos'd or Neg btw.

Pretty good review, although all these high rating reviews of this album read like the writer has a hard on for Vernon (especially that one about kissing a naked guy that doesn't even mention music). I love Bon Iver, but people are starting to get a little overboard, not you in particular, just like everyone (I blame pitchfork). I'm rambling, have a pos.

You complain about people having a hard on for Vernon, yet you 4.5'd.

I don't agree with limited appeal being a negative.

Personally i think an album should be critized for what it is and not for what is not.
I don't think it not having a mass appeal makes it a lesser album.

If someone listens to it and doesn't appeal to them then that's too bad.

Also, i think the review is too short. You basically just say that the music sounds beautiful and
has layers, it has poetic lyrics and it has limited appeal but you don't expand upon why you think
that's positive all that much, not to mention it could use more reasons as to why it's good/bad.

I also won't neg or pos you, because it's not badly written, but it lacks detail.

bon iver fans really seem to get upset that allmusic gave this a 2.5/5, even pushing it off of wikipedia
