Review Summary: 8 years later and Limp Bizkit are still the same...
People say that a band can only grow better with experience. That’s not really the case for Limp Bizkit. In fact, they’ve proved to have got worse over time. Many fans of the band stand by the fact that Significant Other will always be their best album, whereas Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavoured Water was purely an excuse for Fred Durst to drop as many F bombs as his likes by cussing out quite literally everything that pisses him off. After the poor receiving of Results May Vary, Limp Bizkit disappeared. Wes left and it’s taken 8 years to bring out another album. So with Wes back on board, the Bizkit released Gold Cobra.
Remember when I said that a band can get better with experience? It seems Limp Bizkit have sunk back down to the same level as Chocolate Starfish, only not as good. Durst doesn’t seem to have matured the last 8 years. He still insists of cussing things out that annoy him, and he still prefers to threaten people in his songs, only this time with a knife and not a chainsaw. And you’ll find yourself thinking: Do I really want to listen to this? Is it anything that has deep meaning? No, Gold Cobra doesn’t. It gets boring, and it can also come across as just vulgar and vile. The lyrical “genius” of Durst is as follows: “Douchbag! Imma f**k you up! F**k you f**k you f**k you up!” Repeat that four times in the chorus and you find yourself ready to hit the next button. Not that it gets any better. The songs are bland, cuss filled and it almost an attempt to make themselves sound hardcore again. Its not hardcore, a 40 year old man saying he will f**k you up with a knife” and that you don’t want to be his enemy, comes across as just pathetic. Thankfully, other songs like Walking Away and Loser give the album at least some justice.
One thing you can’t fault the album on is the instruments. Wes shreds some wicked guitar work on this album, something fans clearly missed on Results May Vary, and the drumming is also very good. DJ lethal however seems to have disappeared (even though at the time of this review he has been asked to leave), as Limp Bizkit seem to have grown more into the hardcore metal genre. Seems it’s only Durst himself bringing the band down. On a final note, Gold Cobra had the chance to be a good album. With epic guitars and drumming present, the immature lyrics bring it down a great deal, and Durst is still pretending his is a rebel hardcore 20 years old.
