This album was quite hard to get into, i'll do a song by song review of what I think of the songs now.

1. The album starts off with an introduction, just like their last album; Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes and was played in every show before Sing The Sorrow came out with Miseria Cantare. This track doesn't do a lot for me, but I quite like the first part of the song where there is no singing. Some of you who might have seen some live clips of this song or been to one of their concerts; this track is incredibly powerful live. The main lyric of the song is 'Through our bleeding, we are one'. 2.5/5

2. The next song, Porphyria is a short, fast song that really sets the pace for the rest of the album. As in most songs, the band joins in in the chorus to make the song more powerful. Very good song, but in my opinion the lyrics for the chorus (in darkness together we're bringing the light, in darkness together, we are forming, the fire tomorrow is born of the night, in darkness together, we ignite) are a little cheesey. Very good song however. 4/5

3. The next song is one of my favorites of the album. Really great lyrics, and the chorus is quite similiar to the chorus of Porphyria, and Davey really shows of his singing talents in the bit just before the third chorus where he sings 'I fought for life the whole time you were holding me down. You watched me dying, holding me down, you brought my rebirth.' Really beautiful. 5/5

4. Malleus Maleficarum contains some guest vocals from Dexter Holland from the Offspring. Some people feel that they ruin the song, but in my opinion they suit the song very well. It's got a pretty good intro where Adam hits his cymbals very softly until the guitars and bass comes in. The verses are fast and the choruses are heavy. Overall a good song. 3.5/5

5. The next song is again very fast. Some really great lyrics like 'No fear of death, but with fear of life, you'r weakness kills everyone. So live.' VERY good chorus, where Davey and Jade sing a sort of duet. Again one of my favourite songs. 4.5/5

6. Clove Smoke Catharsis is a slow song, again with some guest vocals of Dexter in the last chorus. The drumming is excellent in this song and suits it very well. Again really good lyrics. Also the longest song of the album with more than 4 and a half minutes. 4/5

7. The Prayer Position is a very fast and catchy song, with a great sounding chorus where the whole band joins in again. This song is one of the few 'older' songs still played live today, and really get the crowd going. 4/5

8. No Poetic Device is one of my favorite songs again. I really like it how they sing the chorus in three different ways. Not much to say about it, except that it has some amazing lyrics again. 5/5

9. There is an error on the tracklisting on the cd's that says Weathered Tome is song number 9 and The Last Kiss song number 10. On the cd, number 9 is the last kiss though and what a great song it is. Great chorus and a very cool little bridge where I think bass is the only instrument playing. 5/5<

10. Weathered Tome for many people is a fill up track. I think some people just say this because Hunter once admitted that he did not like this song at all. I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as people make it, and that it's actually quite catchy. Nothing Special though. 2.5/5

11. At A Glance is a really beautiful song. The actual song is only about 2 minutes long, but then about a minute of music with no singing is played, followed by a whole lot of Woah's. Really good song. 5/5

12. God Called In Sick Today is my many fans seen as the ultimate AFI song. It is quite an emotional song, and definitely one of my favourites. The song starts of with a nice and easy guitar riff, and then the vocals come in. Daveys vocals are truelly beautiful in this song. Also some really great and complex drumming. You just have to hear this song before you can say anything bad about these guys, so I advise you to download it if you haven't heard it yet because you are missing out. A masterpiece. 5/5

The secret track is quite good, but nothing special to me. The chorus is quite repetitive as Davey just repeats the line 'Beyond and to all time I stand'. 3.5/5

Overall 4.5/5 :thumb:

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. I would've reviewed every AFI cd, had 3 of them not been done already. Unfortunately, I can relate to "The Last Kiss," which happens to be one of my most favorite AFI songs ever. And I just don't like "Weathered Tomb" because...it's boring. I never heard that Hunter didn't like it though. I play the "God Called In Sick Today" riff like, everyday. The bass is more annoying though. Annoying to play, not annoying to hear...unless I'm playing it, heh. And the songs with Dexter are awesome. I don't see why people would think that he ruins them. The Offspring is better than every other single punk band out there, besides AFI. But neither of them are just punk, so maybe that's why they don't suck. The Offspring are more rockish, and then AFI is more hardcore-ish. Well, great review and I give it a 4.

Too many reviews eh? There was one already but that was actually the Art of Drowning. That means there's two for the Art of Drowning and that this is the first one for Black Sails.

Uh? No. Here is the Black Sails In Sunset Album Review, it's not much for a review, but there is still one. If there is arealdy a review, then you post your review in that thread arealdy made, you dont make a new one.

Read The Rules.

I love this album, but I can't stand Clove Smoke Catharsis, I really do think Dexter's vocals ruin it.

My favourite AFI cd (well, favourite cd in general). I adore God Called in Sick Today and the Prayer Position. And Last Kiss. And Malleus Maleficarum. The whole cd balances the hardcore and the melody really well. And GCIST is just plain beautiful. Prayer Position has such a great beat. It makes me think of a pendulum or something...there's a swinging sound to it.

Decent review, this CD has been in my collection for almost 6 years now, and still hold up better than most. But I'm mostly just commenting because of the part where you talk about Hunter not liking Weathered Tome; I was actually the person who coerced him into admitting it was the Tome he didn't like, during one of their "Ask the band" threads they had on their forums years ago.

Anyhow, great CD, it really was unlike anything else out there at the time. Also, Midnight Sun was simply a brilliant way to introduce a secret song, and the breakdown is super-creepy, even though its kinda ripping off the Foo Fighters.

This is a good cd, but I think the entire album has too much of a similar feeling. At a Glance and God Called in Sick today are my favorites off of this. I think The Art of Drowning is a little better though.

One of my favorites albums ever. It's such a great raw, emotional record. The evolution of the band from Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes to this album is very nice. Many AFI classics are on here, including one of my personal favorites, God Called in Sick Today. The hidden song, Midnight Sun, is such a badass song too.

not a bad review, even though it would help if you listed the song title as well as the track number, so people know what you're talking about. I like this album alot, as AFI is one of my favourite bands.

My 2nd favorite AFI album next to ATASF. This is clearly a different sound than their first three full lengths and to me this is their only change that is a step forward instead of a step into a new lane(Sing the Sorrow). But anyway my favorite track is Narrative of Soul Against Soul with some grerat bass and of course being the fastest song on the album.
