Review Summary: an intoxicated slow dance
Mst is completely loose and understated, the kind of album that sneaks up to you in broad daylight. Its compositions almost formless, its effect intoxicating. The minimalistic nature of some of these songs (including the quiet banger "A Clone is A Clone") recall (but don't butcher) the works of acts such as Four Tet and Actress. Martin Gretschmann builds layers and takes them away with no caution, using such subdued sound as featured on "La Voz Tan Tier". "Mutron Melody" incorporates wonderful layers of sound that build and disentregate, that allow the minimal percussion to hit surprisingly hard. The result sounds kind of insane, like Gretschmann found whatever sounded good and just went for it. But the key is that
Mst is a danceable album, one that is immediately enjoyable and intricate enough for replay. A twilight of its own power, half-asleep, an intoxicated slow dance,
Mst is a wonderous ride.
