Review Summary: Unforgetable unforgiven

2014 and still, there is controversy around this release. I remember back in the days, all "true" metalheads of that era getting disappointed because Metallica stopped being "thrashy". This was too much for (those certain "fans") their macho attitude, acting the "bad" guy in high-school or whatever. It's a fact though, that 90% of the people who can't decipher quality and progression are not among the heavy metal crowds anymore. Some people say, this is a step back. A step back to what? Metallica were never the same in each and every one of their releases. "Ride" is different than "K'em all". "Master" than "Ride" etc... That's why these guys are still out there and those who tried to reproduce the same record over and over, were soon out of business.

There's not much to write about a record, that is well known by the majority of rock fans, in general. This is a monumental and trully inspiring release, which led thousands of kids back then, into the heavy metal community. "The unforgiven" is unforgetable, among the top 5 metal songs ever produced. "Nothing else matters" was played so much that made the whole world admit that there is quality in heavy metal. "Enter Sandman", "Sad but true", "My friend of misery", "Through the never" deliver out excellent ideas. This is as influencial as "Painkiller" or "Black sabbath". It has sold so many copies that even Metallica themselves could not ever imagine. Let alone how many quality covers exist out there, of most of the songs included here.

So, its not about personal emotions, opinions and grudges. This is a gem, made by a mature band with a groovy metal sound that showed potential, that is present even today (see A7X f.e.).

Overall, this is a must-have for every fan of hard rock and metal music. Of course, those who listen to "Cannibal Corpse"-like bands, from sunrise to nightfall or think that metal was born and died between 1980 and 1983, should better ignore it. Heavy metal is not a trend and not a "revolution". Heavy metal is a music genre that expresses feelings, ideas, progression in a true rock way.Thank you Metallica, for giving this to us!

3.5-4 seems about right for this record, at least half of the songs are awesome here.

First 5 Tallica are all classics. You just have to accept the irony that the thrashiest tunes "Through the Never" and "Struggle Within" are the worst songs and the two ballads are the best. Oh and Sad But True is heavy as hell.

Yeah, this is a pretty terrible review.

But don't listen to the people telling you to only write one review per day. Write as many as you want, just make them better than this.

@marbledking very good review of this album. I totally agree with ur opinion and im always glad to notice that there are still real metal fans outside. For all the haters of this album i can only say some people have no taste and are no fans of real metal and thats how it is ;)

I'd say just about right - not as good as their classics but not as shitty as the Loads and Anger

well yea, of course, but I think 3.9 - 4 would be more accurate, at least for sputnik standards
