Review Summary: There were rumours that the girl named Rosa was into field hokey players, we got hooked once, and boy, it was a night!
And then you woke up, and the next thing you know...
Every damn time I hang out with Rosa, I spent half the date wishing I was with someone else, I mean, c’mon, we had a few drinks, chatted a little, and all of sudden, she was screaming about broken bones, incest and mutilation. To be sincere, she scares me sometimes, I mean, hell, she almost took my head off with a bottle once, but, then, she just sits in a corner, and Gigantic comes in, and the soft smile she wears for a split of a second kills me, for that one song, I know there’s something more, maybe were just not meant to be…
Then she gets mad again, screaming as the guitars go crazy, and then, all of sudden, she stands there, staring, looking at me, deep in the eye, and she smiles again, where is my mind? That’s what she said, hell, I don’t know by now where’s mine
A few more drinks, and no more words were needed, no more outbursts of violence, no more crazy rants (Ok, just a few, to keep life interesting) after all, we’re just trying to have a good time!
Well, that was until I tried to get to second base, and a red brick comes out of nowhere and knocks me out, but that’s the whole point with her, you just never know what to expect, you just, keep coming back, because, you know, she’s special, Rosa's got something no one else has
You just can’t say no
Surfer Rosa saw the daylight in 1988, and is the first full LP by the legendary alt. heroes Pixies, a highly influential album, Rosa forged the blueprint for the Alternative Nation that would rule the world a mere four years later; conjuring grotesque and often bleak imagery with unusual arrangements and trademark soft-loud dynamics to create an extremely varied and polarized album that features blazing punk and melodic pop songs in equal measure
Abrasive and stomping from the very first moment, the first side is a sheer hearted classic, highlights including the Deal penned “Gigantic” and the all time classic “Where is my Mind”, the second side, arguably weaker, still retains a high level, with fun and light hearted songs such as “Tony’s Theme” and “Oh My Golly”
Surfer Rosa is not your regular radio friendly album, and is certainly not the most accessible work by the Pixies, but it’s one of their best albums, and I dare to say, one of the finest albums of the 80s
